Hospital Addition Ground Purchased by Iron County Board

Iron County commissioners authorize buying land south of the Cedar City hospital for a 25 bed addition, isolation ward, and kitchen modernization. Land bought from John S Woodbury for 1000 dollars. County actions include tax property clarifications and an intercity fire protection plan with Parowan and Cedar City. Also approved 200 dollars for Christmas newspaper ad and reported funeral of Dale Seegmiller with family notes.

Registration Reaches Expectation at B A C Campus

Dr Wayne Driggs optimistic forecast for the B A C enrollment is borne out by Helstration day results showing a 100 percent rise from last year and continued arrival on campus. Increased male enrollment, veterans returning under Rehabilitation provisions, and dorms filling push light housekeeping prep and fines for late arrivals.

Overseas Xmas Mailing Period Sep 15 to Oct 15

Christmas parcels for armed forces overseas must be mailed between September 15 and October 15. Parcels to APO Fleet Post Offices and other overseas hubs require marking as Christmas parcels and have size limits. Cards may be mailed anytime but should arrive by November 16 for Christmas delivery. Boxes must be sturdy and tightly wrapped with plain addressing.

Standing Committees Chosen By Parowan Exchange Club

Parowan Exchange Club announced standing committees for the coming year at the first meeting since new officers were elected. Members include Clair Rowley chairing Community Projects and Kent Mitchell chairing Membership. An October event at the Five Mile was planned with A C Hatch and Marlon Topham leading. Funeral services were held for David Matheson with large local and out of town attendance and multiple speakers and musical tributes.

School Board Accepts Clerks Resignation and New Appointment

The Iron County School District Board accepted the resignation of Janet Rodio as Clerk of the Board and appointed James Robb of Paragonah as her successor. The changes take effect October 1, with Robb arriving from Seattle by then. Rodio retires after nearly 29 years of service to manage her Cedar City ladies ready-to-wear store. The board discussed wartime restrictions and approved using school buses for nonacademic activities and advancing athletic field improvements at Cedar City and Parowan high schools, including a sprinkling system at the seatbelt field. The district also addressed student labor in emergency harvests.

Two More Local Service Men Return From Europe

Two more of our local service men arrived home this week after serving with the American forces in Europe. PFC Norman L. Mickelson, a 7SMM gunner on a light tank, spent time in France since January and was near Lorient before heading toward the Orient via the Mediterranean and Suez. He returns to visit his family for 30 days. PFC Elwood Trimmer, son of local farmer Mike Trimmer, spent over a year in England France and Germany and is on a 30-day furlough visiting his mother in California.

Sarah A Stevens to Observe Eightieth Birthday Open House

Mrs. Sarah Ann Stevens will celebrate her Eightieth birthday with an open house at her home on Sunday afternoon September 16. Calling hours are from three to six, and friends, relatives, and neighbors are invited. The note also mentions Eugene Robinson planning to enroll at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Court Sets Next Week Jurors Drawn If Needed

The Iron County District Court will convene Tuesday Sept 18 with civil cases and two criminal actions, a murder case against John Hulse of Kanarraville and an assault case against Frank Hudson of Cedar City. A list of petit jurors has been drawn but service will be confirmed if needed. among those named are Lloyd Crawford and Vera Mortensen of Parowan, Clem Judd and others from Cedar City. Also notes Lt Simon Benson received the Air Medal and Betty Marie Miller's nursing cadet ceremony in Salt Lake City.

Students May Leave School During Emergencies

In an emergency with no other labor available, students may be allowed to leave school provided the job is large enough to employ sixty percent of the high school's student body.

Hatch to Address Both Wards on Sunday Afternoon

The two ward memberships plan a Sacrament meeting next Sunday afternoon at 3 in the ward chapel to hear from community returned service men. Lt. Col A C Hatch will speak, joined by other local service personnel on furlough or recently released, with special musical numbers arranged. Boyd R Morris and family are visiting from Louisiana while Boyd is on furlough.
