Iron County property taxes pass million dollar mark
Iron County taxes for 1953 top one million dollars for the first time in history, rising to 1,326,014 from 971,072 in 1952. The increase stems from higher State Levy and a near nine million dollar rise in assessed public utilities value. About 67.85 percent, roughly 900,000, funds State and County school and other county needs. the rest supports four cities, towns, and special funds. Tax notices will be mailed by the County Treasurer in November. November is the delinquent payment date.

Iron County Board Seeks Drought Relief Area Inclusion
Iron County Commissioners in Cedar City at their monthly meeting urged adding Iron County to the drought relief area alongside neighboring counties. They approved 379.28 from the drought fund to reduce a 2104.57 balance for the 1952 53 program, with no firm promise of further relief. The board also appointed Myron F. Higbee to replace Lyman Levy on the real estate reappraisal committee and sought state road fund formulas and Iron County's secondary road account. They urged influence with Garfield County to complete the Bone Hollow road to Highway 89, noting Garfield had deprioritized the project after an agreement. A bid from 8 DeMaine Jones to install a boiler and stoker in the county courthouse was accepted, and 2277.10 was authorized for grasshopper control by Park Air Flying Service in New Castle and Paragonah, to be reimbursed by property owners. Commissioners Douglas Clark, Warren Bulloch, and Jess Guyman attended with most county officers.

They now reside at 87 Congress Street Pasadena California with Bud employed locally and Lucille a nurse at a Southern California hospital. Local Couple to Fill Six Month Mission in the South
Mr and Mrs Harley W Dalton of Paurowan have been called by General Authorities of the LDS Church to fulfill a six month mission in the Central Atlantic States covering North Carolina Virginia and part of West Virginia The Daltons have been active in Ward and Stake church affairs Mrs Dalton as historian of the County Camp officer in Daughters of Utah Pioneers and in the Helier Society Sunday School She has served as historian for years Mr Dalton is a member of the Parowan Stake High Council and has served as a counselor in the West Ward Bishopric He was a former Stake President of the Mutual Improvement Association and a member of the Stake Sunday School Board They plan to leave for Salt Lake City around October 1 spending a week with daughters Josephine and Caroline before beginning the mission.

Parowan youth injured by tractor mishap near work site
Gary Rummier eighteen suffered bruises and burns when a tractor front wheel ran over his chest and dragged him along an oiled highway near Parowan. He work at a rock crushing plant east of Parowan driven by Hoy Benson. X rays showed no internal injuries but burns and friction injuries delayed his BYU enrollment plans by weeks.

Mrs Alma Evans suffered a broken right tibia after stepping into an irrigation ditch at home while carrying a pan of cucumbers. The injury required surgery and a metal plate to stabilize the break. Her parents Arthur and Dora Cottam of St George and siblings Carl and Della visited. the children were taken to Dixie for care while she recovers.

Couple Honored At Reception In Cedar City
Newlyweds Mr and Mrs Wallace Glen Lee reside in Cedar City after a brief honeymoon. The bride Joan Adele Adams is the daughter of Claude and Ad am Adams of Parowan and Glen S Lee of Panguitah. A wedding breakfast at Frank Church home in St George preceded a reception at the Adams home in Warawan, with fall flowers. The bride wore a white lace and satin gown with seed pearl crown and red rose bouquet. Attending were matron of honor Mrs Richard Hillerman and bridesmaids Veda Tebbs and Lukee Munford. Best man Arthur Cooper of Panguitah and parents of the couple were present. A later courtroom session addressed several cases and jurors from Cedar City and nearby areas were summoned for Barton case.

Iron County school statistics show 306 first graders this year, up from 190 in 1951 and 248 in 1952, with 162 in Cedar West, 81 in Cedar East, 43 in Parondon and the rest in other district schools. Total county enrollment 2440 across 12 grades, up from 2316. Preschool figures suggest continued growth for next five years. The board urged hiring a second Parowan First Grade teacher and reported Parowan High gym completion within two weeks with folding doors to divide the space for two gyms.
