Parowan to Elect Mayor and Two Councilmen in November

Parowan City will choose a mayor and two councilmen in the November 3 election. Mayor Lyman and councilmen F J King and Edgar Benson have terms ending this year. Holdovers Scott Mitchell Heber Gurr and Robinson remain, with treasurer and recorder posts not on the ballot. Two October registration dates, October 13 and 27, require voters to verify eligibility with precinct registrars.

Primary Childrens Friend Magazine Drive In Parowan Stake

A campaign by the LDS Primary organizations in Parowan Stake aims to renew subscriptions to the Children s Friends magazine and attract new subscribers. Workers urge households with children or young relatives to subscribe. editors note subscriptions must be prepaid two months in advance, prompting an earlier push.

Herbert Hulet Takes California Bride

Newlyweds Herbert and Betty Hulet were married in Las Vegas Nevada on Sept 19 officiated by Thomas J Daly pastor of St Lutheran Church. Betty Valente daughter of Frank Valente Nipomo California and Herbert served in the Army with overseas Korea tour after Navy duty. They will reside in Santa Maria California where Herbert is employed after honeymoon in Parowan and nearby areas.

Regional PTA Conferences Planned by Region 8

Mrs. Golda Guyman announces a series of Region 8 PTA conferences across Beaver Iron and Washington Counties to strengthen parent child relationships. Beaver County meets Monday at 3 PM in Beaver High School. Cedar City hosts two sessions Tuesday at 4 PM and 3 1 PM in the school auditorium. The Iron County meeting features the Nora Sterling play Fresh Variable Winds with a post show discussion led by Miss Winifred Hazen. Washington County holds two sessions Wednesday at 4 and 8 PM in Hurricane High School with the play also performed.

Parowan Stake Talent Show Rescheduled for October 14

Parowan Third Ward Primary officers announce the Parowan Stake Youth Talent Show is moved to Wednesday October 14. Participant registration is extended to October 1. The event raises funds for a new church building and invites youth eighteen and under to compete in age groups for prizes donated by local businesses including Parowan Mercantile Company and Alma's Mobile Market.

Social News Highlights From Tri-H Club Gathering

Mrs. Gale Wood hosted Tri-H Club members last Thursday at her home. Plans for playground equipment drives and a visible thermometer chart to show community contributions were outlined. Mrs. Mattie Jean Harris received the club’s quilt. Mrs. Luella A. Dalton of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers will attend a social in Parowan with DUP and other camp officers hosting. Mrs. Dalton and her husband plan a mission to the Central Atlantic States next week. Every community woman is invited to attend the 6 p.m. event at the Old Rock Church social rooms.

Missionaries To Be Honored At Testimonial Saturday

A missionary testimonial will be held Saturday at 6 pm in the Parowan Third Ward Chapel honoring Mr and Mrs Harley W Dalton of the Parowan First Ward. They depart around October 1 for Salt Lake City to spend a week with their children before entering the mission home October T. The event is arranged by the First Ward High Priests Quorum with Dalton as a member. All Parowan Stake members are urged to attend.

Parowan High Band Travels to Utah Meet

The Parowan High School Band will depart Friday October 2 for Salt Lake City to join the University of Utah Band invitational. About 55 students will parade and perform in the stadium during the Utes and Kuwaii football game with instructor Wilford Young and chaperone Mary Lyman. Board of Education and County Superintendent approved their attendance.

Mack Lyman Volunteers For Induction

Mack Lyman son of Mr and Mrs Rulon M Lyman of Parowan volunteered for induction into the armed services last week. He had expected the call since June as older men moved ahead on the draft rolls. Mack, a graduate of focal High School, attended Utah State Agricultural College at Logan for two years and will report at Cedar City on October 5. Garth Gilger, son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Gilger, will also report that day for induction.

Parowan Relief Society Honors Mrs Dalton Before Mission

Mrs Luella A Dalton of Parowan First Ward Relief Society will be honored at an opening social Monday afternoon in the Relief Society rooms at 7 pm. She plans to depart for Salt Lake City next Thursday to prepare for service in the Central Atlantic States Mission. President Mabel Wilcock urges all members to attend amid the LDS General Conference and Sunday Fast Day Sacrament meetings across Parowan Stake wards.

Parowan Schools Launch Autumn Cleanup Campaign

Parowan elementary and high school students joined a community autumn cleanup urged by Principals Mas Dalley and Alma Lawrence. Under teacher direction every class cleaned campus weeds and rubbish while junior high students crawled to pick up scattered debris along walkways. The effort extended to City mainstreet with 7th grade volunteers clearing sidewalks and curbs along a portion of the thoroughfare.

City Officials Double Salaries To Pay Mileage

Parowan City officials approve a salary raise at a special meeting on Monday evening. The mayor's salary rises to 3400.00 per year and each councilman to 100.00 per annum to cover gasoline mileage. Other business items were discussed before adjournment.

Parowan Woman Breaks Leg in Nightfall Fall

Lifelong Parowan resident Mrs Fratiem Martia suffered a broken right hip when she lost balance and fell at her son Ray Morris’s home. She was taken by ambulance to Salt Lake City and admitted to the LDS Hospital for treatment with the leg to be set Wednesday morning. Her daughter Mes Asa Topham of Paragonah and daughter-in-law Mrs Durham Morris of Cedar City accompanied her.

New Arrival at Iron Counts Hospital in Sept

A newborn black haired boy weighing just under seven pounds was delivered at Iron Counts Hospital on September 18 to Mr and Mrs Ramon Bentley of Parowon. Grandparents Hay Kentley and Claude Burton of Papa Wan rejoice, with great grandmothers Alice Davis of Las Vegas and Zella Worthen. The new mother is Frankie Low Burton, connected to the city’s power plant project in Red Creek Canyon with a preliminary survey on the pen stock route underway.

Fire Destroys Paragonah Home

A major blaze in Paragonah destroyed Mr Od Me Den Bartons home after an overheated stove started the fire shortly after 6 pm. The couple, away at the time, returned to find the house a total loss with belongings, guns, furniture, and appliances ruined. Neighbors reported the fire and only clothing and some blackened silverware survived.

Gilger reception honors new Mrs Gilger in Foley Alabama

Mr and Mrs Hugh Gilger hosted a Saturday night reception for their son and new daughter in law Katherine Camellia Douglas daughter of Richard B Douglas of Foley Alabama. The marriage occurred Sept 2 at Par Owl House. The bride wore ice blue net over taffeta with pink corsage. The ceremony included music readings and remarks.
