County fair displays break records at Iron County exhibit
The Parowan High School gym hosted the Iron County Fair with record crowds viewing 4H, crops, homemaking, flowers and crafts. Sack art displays drew top honors from Parowan and Paragonah Relief Societies, while Mary Jane Vandenberg won the baking prize with a chiffon cake and notable canning and sewing awards highlighted the event. Livestock showed less cattle and swine interest, with Jersey and Holstein prizes, grand champion lambs and rams, and college of Southern Utah claiming sheep prizes. The boys 4-H judging, demonstrations, and style dress winners will advance to the Utah State Fair. story continues on page three.

Lunch Room Personnel Help At Institute
Iron County school lunch room staff helped prepare transport and serve three meals for more than 100 teachers at a preschool institute at Navahe Lake. Food prepared at East elementary, packed in seven fallen thermos containers, served hot or cold in the mountains.

Chad Orton Called to Canadian LDS Mission
Chad Orton son of Mr and Mrs Claude Orton of Parowan received a call from the First Presidency to serve a mission in the Western Canadian area. First Ward Reports Fund Raising Progress for Pipe Organ
Parowat First Ward Bishopric reports $863.72 raised toward a $1200 organ fund from benefits and contributions. Death of Culleen Decker in California
Culleen Decker, one year old daughter of Neils and Imogene Decker, died during throat surgery in Paramount California. Funeral services were held there with O Winston Orton Ted Rowley and Dwain Decker among mourners, burial in Parowan Utah. Survived by family in Paramount Berkeley and Parowan, with several Utah residents attending services. Former Parowan residents attended, and the Parowan group returned after services.

Visiting in Parowan with Mr and Mrs John S Mitchell are their son First Lieutenant J Preston Mitchell and Mrs Mitchell now of Las Cruces New Mexico He received a medical retirement from the US Army on August List at the William Beaumont Army Hospital Fort Bliss Texas He had been confined to the hospital since being wounded by mortar fragment while serving as forward observer with a field artillery battalion in Korea in January of this year The couple will return to Las Cruces this month where Pep will enter New Mexico A and M University to study mechanical engineering on the Civil Service Co op plan It will take four years to complete requirements for his degree with six months each year at the school and six months as a student engineer at White Sands New Mexico After graduation he will qualify to take a Civil Service position at White Sands Preston was an honor graduate from Parowan High School and attended the University of Utah on a special scholarship before he was called into service in August 1950 He was selected from the 213th field artillery battalion for Officers Training School and after completion went overseas in April 1952 The young couple are buying a new home in Las Cruces where their location will be more or less permanent

Parowan Stake plans a Friday dinner on September 18 at the School House to raise 3000 dollars for the Stake farm payments. An estimated 1200 attendees will dine from 5 p.m. with beef and venison entrees, a picture show, floor show, and dancing. Tickets cost 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children, with attendees bringing own dishes. Stake farms proceeds fund welfare programs and ward programs. Assisting are Oscar J. The $72.50 cost was raised by selling Lions' Club birthday calendars on commission. Last Rites For Mrs Verian Waldron Miller In Parowan
Funeral services for Mrs Verian Waldron Miller wife of Lawrence J Miller of Parowan were held Friday at 2 pm in the Parowan Third Ward Chapel under Bishop A Hills Orton. She died Wednesday morning at Iron County Hospital after a lengthy illness. Burial followed in Parowan with pallbearers Ivan Orton Lamont Benson Frank Stevens Dee Pritchard Gerald Hyatt and Jim Miller. She was daughter of Elizabeth Benson and John Waldron and eldest granddaughter of Heber and Mary Benson. Survived by her husband and several aunts. Her mother had died earlier in Parowan.
