Last Rites for Lewis M. Lowder in Parowan Utah
Last rites were held for Lewis Monroe Lowder 83 lifelong Parowan resident at the Parowan Third Ward Chapel. He died Saturday morning at his home from causes incident to age. Bishop Karl C. Mitchell presided with organ music by Mrs. Orna Johnson. Residents and out-of-town relatives attended including Clarence Lowder and Grant Eastwood of Salt Lake City and families from St. George Panguitch Santaquin Richfield Cedar City and Cedar City. Pallbearers included Art Marion John Edgar Lowder Bert Felstead and Orland Rodgers.

Paragonah School opens Monday September 7 at 9 o clock. Miss Helen Stones returns as principal teaching grades one to three, Glenn Jones grades four to six, Chester Benson grades seven and eight. James H Anderson caretaker and bus driver outlines two day schedule with 8 a m runs for seniors and freshmen and 12 45 for sophomores juniors and higher grades.

Alan Matheson Receives Balfour Honor at Hanover
Alan A. Matheson 21, son of Attorney and Mrs. Scott M. Matheson of Salt Lake City, was awarded the 1953 Balfour Award at a Sigma Chi leadership conference in Hanover Indiana. Chosen among graduating seniors from 123 chapters for scholarship, leadership, character and service, Matheson graduated from the University of Utah with a 3.85 average and planned to study law after military service.

William G Rowley Dies At Parowan Home
William Giles Rowley 85 lifelong Parowan resident died at his home from age related causes after a rapid decline. He was father of Parowan Stake President W Clair Rowley and long time Ward Teacher and High Priests Quorum secretary. Survived by nine children including Milo and Richard Rowley and Lela Chatwin and Elva Eckles, with 30 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Services held at Parowan Third Ward Chapel conducted by Bishopric with Karl O Mitchell presiding.

Mrs Vernon Waldron Miller 2 wife of Lawrence Jo Miller of Parowan died at 10 30 am Wednesday in Iron County Hospital after major surgery July 6 in Salt Lake City to treat a malignant ailment Funeral services were set for Friday at 2 pm in Parowan Third Ward Church under Bishop A Hills Orton Burial will be in Parowan City Cemetery Jensen Mortuary directed She was born April 7 1891 in Beaver daughter of Elizabeth Benson and John Waldron Her first marriage to Claude Collins ended with his death She later married a Mr Becker who also died They wed Mr Miller in May 1947 in Reno Nevada and moved to Parowan the following year where they resided She is survived by her husband several aunts including Mrs Mary B Orton of Parowan Friends may visit Friday starting 10 am before the service

Sorensons Return From Europe Tour Details
Doctor and Mrs. Lionel W Sorenson returned from a Europe trip starting May 6. They traveled via train to New York City and boarded the S S Queen Mary for five days at sea, reached Southampton and London for Coronation preparations, then rode train and boat to Paris for the Inter-National Rotary Convention with about 10,395 Rotarians and Rotary-Anns attending.

Enock Woman Receives 1953 Golden Gleaner Award
Mrs Drucilla Grimshaw Smith of Enoch Ward received the 1953 Golden Gleaner Award from the Mutual Improvement Association in Parowan. The award honors her long service in the D S Church youth and auxiliary programs, marking her as the second Parowan Stake recipient after Nora Lund in 1952.

Mrs. Phil Benson and daughters Neta and Susan traveled to Tooele to see John V in the Utah All-State Class A basketball game. The group joined Sime Benson and others, then moved to Springville for the final game, with Sime moving to Wells Nevada to join a high school faculty. Iron County Fair and Horse Show Opens Entrancing Equestrian Program
Parowan Stake Third Ward funds drive continues with a series of fund raising entertainments starting Wednesday at 5 30 pm. A hot dinner will be served outdoors weather permitting or in Relic Hall basements. Relief Society members solicit ticket sales and requests attendees bring dishes and utensils. The Iron County Fair opens with crops and livestock judging all day Friday and horse show events Saturday at the City race track and rodeo grounds. Fair Queen Joan Orton with attendants will appear, culminating in a dance at Parowan High School featuring the Austin Haywood Orchestra from Cedar City.

Parowan Stake announced releases and appointments of church officials at the Quarterly Conference in Parowan. Peter H urr was released as president of the Stake High Priests' Quorum. Gurr departed for two years in the Hawaiian Mission. Howard Dalley of Summit was named to succeed him, with Dan Crawford Parowan and Gilbert Robinson Paragonah as counselors and Dee Wilcken Enoch as secretary.
