Final Registration Date Ahead of November Elections

Last registration date listed as Tuesday, October 1, with offices open 8 to 9 p.m. in Paragonah and Parowan precincts. Voters who did not vote in 1948 or 1949 municipal elections or who moved must register to vote in November. Eligibility requires 21 years old, one year residency in the state, four months in the county, and 60 days in the precinct.

A Parowan school meeting led by Principal A C Hatch will form adult education classes this Wednesday at 8 pm in high school room 2. A sewing class led by Mrs Luetta Mortensen starts this week, with arts and crafts ceramics physical education and current problems discussed. The goal is twelve week courses with one class weekly or equivalent and to gauge local interest.

Hallowe en will be observed in Parowan Ward Primaries on Tuesday with parties in most grades. Mrs Arvilla Mortensen West Ward president says children should bring dimes for the annual fund. Leonard Rowley to star as Nicola in BYU arms and the man

Leonard Rowley of Parowan returns to Brigham Young University to play Nicola in the season’s first dramatic production Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw. The play runs October 25 to 28 with a Diamond Jubilee special performance. Rowley, active in BYU drama last year, has roles in Command Decision and The Barretts of Wimpole Street and was assistant director of She Stoops to Conquer. He belongs to Theta Alpha Phi and transferred from the BAC at Cedar Legion Dance City, where he participated in Gun & Red Dance stage and radio.

Transformer Shift To Require Power Shut-Off Tuesday

The City administration announced a power shut-off for most of Tuesday to permit moving transformers and regulators from the Parowan plant to a southwest town substation. City manager Harrell Datton said the Parowan plant has been carrying 170 load versus 100 capacity, creating a fire risk. A Southern Utah Power Co crew will assist local workers to complete the transfer in one day, with businesses and residents warned to plan ahead.

New arrivals report a grandson born Oct 9 at Iron County Hospital to Norman and Dorothy Gilger of Cedar City. The boy weighed 5 pounds 9 ounces, with a 3 year old brother Timmy Loray. His mother Dorothy Shiefer Scarborough of Springdale is noted. The second baby, a preterm boy of about 3 pounds and ounces, arrived at County Hospital Wednesday evening, to Ray and Mae Evans Simkins of Parowan, and will stay in incubator as he grows, with a sister and three brothers awaiting him at home.

Grayson Gurr Weds Prominent Idaho Musician

Grayson Gurr and Ila Manwill were married at the Salt Lake Temple on a Friday morning. The ceremony was conducted by Elder Harold B. Lee with close family present. After a breakfast in Salt Lake City, the couple planned a honeymoon and a Nov. 4 Richfield Ward reception. Ila Manwill, a noted vocalist and pianist, taught in Idaho and worked in Shoshone and Richfield banks. Grayson Gurr, a Parowan High School graduate, attended BYI and USA C, served in the Army Air Corps in World War III, and did two years on a LDS Church mission in Canada. They will reside at the Gurr Farm in Parowan.

Hunters ready for deer hunt as final hour nears

Deer season draws near with locals and out of state visitors flocking to Parowan and nearby hills. Eight thousand antlerless permits sold in two weeks, 49 of 100 Varowan area permits to non residents, 15 Parayound Cottonwood permits to out of state hunters. Deer moving down from higher elevations, scattered through surrounding hills, feeders found near Parowan and Haragonal. Local game warden reports growing crowd as lodging fills and reservations peak.

Chad Orton will serve as mayor for one day Tuesday following school elections. City officials include Larry Mitchell Hal Evans Earl Spencer Mack Lyman and Melvin Mitchell as councilmen with Marilyn Ward city auditor Janet Mortensen treasurer. Halloween activities brighten Utah schools and towns

Miss Joan Bayles and Misa Ellen Miller attended a school conducted by Art Publishing Co. for Utah students. Elementary students will march Halloween regalia along Matin Street to Firmage Theatre then attend a movie matinee. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. United Nations Day events featured a prayer, national anthem, and a talk on the UN. Juniors host a Halloween Ball at the High School gym with decorations, refreshments, confetti and prizes, music by the 7 Notes Orchestra, and assemblies to follow. Public invited to both events.
