Installment details a 19th century Parowan community dance during the centennial. A Bishop blesses the gathering, youths awkwardly dance, prizes are drawn, then couples promenade. Food piles appear as couples court and gossip, with plainer attire and homemade treats shaping a lively social scene. Continued next week.
Two Parowan boys entered military service this week. Boyd L. Mitchell, son of Mr and Mrs O Mitchell, left Friday for Fort Ord California. He rode with Dan Boles who heads to Casper Wyoming. Clarence Benson Junior departed Monday for Salt Lake City and was reportedly sent to Fort Riley Kansas.
Parowan Stake Quarterly Conference scheduled for November 11 and 12, announced by Stake President W. Clair Rowley. Events include a priesthood leadership session Saturday evening in West Ward, general sessions at 10 am and 2 pm Sunday in East Ward Church, and an MLA meeting Sunday evening with details to be announced. East Ward choir to provide much of Sunday music.
Notices mailed to unpaid subscribers warn of possible switching to a “pay or withhold paper” system. Some papers extend limited post expiration service, while the Times reports rising service fees. Kath leen Ann Fornoff daughter of Dr and Mrs Homer Fornoff announces her marriage to Lionel Winton Sorenson Jr son of Dr and Mrs L W Sorenson. Rites were in the Logan Temple Oct 6 officiated by President Christensen. Guests included the groom’s parents and relatives, the bridal couple flew to Salt Lake City, then returned to Bay City for a reception Oct 7 at the bride’s home. The bride, attired in white satin with veil and bouquet, and the groom celebrated a two year romance begun at Berkeley L D S Seminary. The bride is a senior at the University of California Oakland. Parowan Legion members met to firm up Armistice Day plans. A free afternoon sports program at the race track is planned with Max Hendrickson coordinating entries. The Legion Auxiliary develops an oratorical contest for Parowan High School students, with a morning public meeting and a grand ball in the evening to close the day.
The Parowan Ward Primaries will run an annual drive to subscribe to The Children’s Friend Magazine. Officers and teachers will visit homes to seek new subscriptions and renewals. Current subscribers should verify expiration dates for proper entry on subscription blanks.
Mr and Mrs Lance Hyatt of Gunnison visited with mothers Mrs Lucy Hyatt and Mrs Annie Decker. Mr and Mrs Almon H Orton spent a week in Los Angeles seeking a specialist for Hill s arm. Mrs Dottie Ward returns home after months in Salt Lake City with Rex s family. Emerson Adams and daughter Sharron of Spokane are visiting Parowan with John H Pendleton and Mabel A Warren families, planning to return Saturday. Mrs Mary M Marsden s 15th birthday was celebrated with friends at her home. Florence M Joseph and Silas T Orton family gathered to mark Orton s recent marriage.
Dairymen in Parowan Valley meet Tuesday Oct 24 at 8 8 P M in the County Court House Parowan Utah Extension dairyman Lyman Rich of Utah State Agriculture College will speak and present slides on dairying topics including artificial insemination and dairy management He toured Europe collecting dairy industry photos and information Students and dairymen from Summit Paragonah and Parowan urged to attend.
Miss Lora May Benson wed Pfc Jack M McClary at Fort Lewis Washington on Nov 2 with the post chaplain officiating Best man Jay Stokes Hurricane. The couple will live at Fort Lewis while the National Guard unit remains there.
The West Main and Center street property formerly owned by the Ida M Orton Paxton heirs was bought by Charles F Bentley and his wife. They plan a remodeling into five modern apartments with two ready for occupancy this fall and a central heating system for the entire building. The brick structure has long been a Parowan landmark serving as hotel and rooming house, originally the Orton Hotel and later the Paxton.
Deer hunters are urged to stock grub boxes with lucious home baked foods for a sale Thursday October 26 at the Cartwright building west main street north of Buy-Rite Grocery. Baked goods bottled jams jellies and pickles will be donated by community ladies. All ladies are invited to contribute and drop items by 9 a.m. The funds support the relic hall project.
A dense list of OCT NOV and DEC gatherings from veterans meetings to DAL youth clubs, scout meetings, dances, primary board and ward meetings, Harvest Ball, Christmas programs, opera, concerts, and city council sessions. Includes MLA leadership, D.U.P. chapters Paulina Elizabeth camps, Sons of Utah Pioneers, Stake Conference sessions, Legion Armistice, and gun and rod dances.
First graders arrived to rainbow painted chairs and play furniture after mothers painted them during holidays. Mrs Fae Benson led the class with help from Mrs Donna Reese and Adelle B Matheson while planning an upcoming program and home arithmetic activities. The mothers' surprise work delighted teachers and students, reflecting strong community involvement. The class also toured a new home site built by Roger Gurr and Frank Adams parents, and visited two houses under construction at the southeast town corner.
A call from the Parowan Stake Welfare to volunteer for potato picking and hauling at Welfare Farm on Saturday. Workers should meet at the echo corner at 8 am for transport to the farm. Direction provided by Stake Wellast Farm committee members Ware Pendleton Haltermin Dalley and James. about an acre harvest expected per day with adequate help.
Six Parowan High School students joined a large Utah group at the Utah Educational Association convention in Salt Lake City. Representatives were Marl Lyman, Jay Winters, Katrin Taylor, Yeonne Macfarlan, Janet Mortensen, and Jon Bayles.
Members of the Parowin Literary Club gathered Wednesday night for a book review of The Black Rose by Thomas Costain. Mrs Huldah Halot presented the historical novel while Mrs Thales Brown hosted and president Bertrude Mitchell chaired the session.
