Parowan Canyon Road work begins and plans outlined
Construction on Parowan Canyon Road started Monday with State Road Commission equipment clearing the right of way. County crews will begin Wednesday as funding allows. The project runs from Wilcock Canyon upstream to tackle oiling later, with heavy work deferred until funds improve. Discussions with Zion Bryce and Cedar Breaks Parks target annual 35 to 40 thousand dollar appropriations to finish Cedar Breaks road via park equipment, possibly within two to three years. A Cedar City meeting with Utah's Congressional delegation was set for November 10 to discuss Cedar Breaks access and Kolob Plateau options. Durham Morris resignation as assistant county attorney was accepted. no replacement named. Buyers report feeders like Ben Robinson, D Robinson, and Day Farms plan to feed about 1000 head each at 16.5 to 17 cents per pound. Market notes show pork prices near 15 cents per pound for choice pigs, while fats run high. Ezra T. Benson warned that farm prices have fallen about a quarter since Korea War peaks and that past programs often harmed the economy. Virginia Topham of Parowan daughter of Silas Topham has been named a Homecoming Queen candidate at College of Southern Utah. A CSU senior, she majors in elementary education with a language and home economics minor. She began on a Carl Raymond Gray scholarship and is sponsored by Lambda Delta Sigma in collaboration with the LDS Institute of Religion. Virginia has also been nominated as upperclass representative for the Associated Women Students.

William J Gurr Dies At 77 In Parowan Valley
William J Gurr 77 died suddenly of a heart attack at home in Parowan on Monday. Born December 27 1878 in Parowan he lived here all his life and worked in farming and livestock after earlier freighting to Southern Utah. He served as Deputy County Assessor and held civic church roles. Surviving are five children Laver Elvin Errold and two daughters in Cedar City Boise and Salt Lake City plus 16 grandchildren a brother and sister. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 p.m. in Parowan Third Ward LDS Chapel with burial in Parowan City Cemetery.

Bus and Truck Crash Fatal To Driver
A bus and heavily loaded pickup collided about a mile south of Paragounah just after midnight. H. P. Kemper, driver of the Continental Trailways bus, died in Iron County Hospital three hours after the crash. Four bus passengers were hospitalized: Susan Kelly, Mary Packard, Asa Winger, and Charles Junior Arnold. Godfrey Henke, 19, of Riveria California, drove the pickup. neither he nor his passenger was injured. The south bound bus swerved to avoid a head on crash, struck the pickup, and pile-up cargo caused further damage. State Trooper J. Lowe Barton and Arch Benson investigated.
