Public School Funds Could Jump 60 Percent

Utah Foundation reports that if all states matched Utah’s tax effort, national public school funds could rise by about 60 percent, adding roughly 3.7 billion to state and local revenues for 1951-52. The study highlights Utah’s high educational achievement and consolidation advantages, noting federal aid comprised about 6 percent of Utah’s school funding in 1953-54.

Fall harvest, aphids hit alfalfa and hay prices rise

Gun and Rod To Set Up Hunter Information Booth

Parowan Gun and Rod Club plans a hunter information service for six days before deer season. A Main Street booth will display Parowan area materials to attract out of state hunters. Volunteers from 7 AM to night, with a daytime guide and member shifts before weekly closing. Plans to fund via local merchants if possible. Booth opens Sunday Oct 15 per Ralph Orton.

Funeral service for Stanley Prothero in Paragonah

Funeral services for 68 year old Stanley Prothero were held in the Paragonah Ward Chapel with Clark A. Lamoreaux presiding. Speakers included Howard Joseph and J Leonard Topham. Life history read by Helen Stones. Pallbearers listed as Marlo Stones, Milo Stones, Grant Jones, LeGrande Robb, Ralph Lamoreaux, and Raymond Prothero. Prothero, born August 17 1887 in Paragonah, married Eliza Stones in St George Temple. He served as county road supervisor for 25 years and worked for Union Pacific Railroad at Iron Springs before dying Friday morning.

Mary R. Bentley Dies in Denver at 75

Mary R. Bentley 75 native of Parowan died at a Denver hospital on October 5 from cancer. She taught at an Indian school in Sham Utah, married Joseph R. Bentley in Parowan in 1904, and is survived by three sisters Jennie Jensen Ada Nora Richards. Body to be returned to Parowan for Monday services at the First Second Ward Chapel.

Lt. Freeman Pendleton, stationed in Italy for three years, visits his family in Salt Lake City after flying from New York. His wife and young son remain in the east awaiting his return, and he will be assigned to teach military science at Washington University in Philadelphia upon his return.
