Sheriff Kent reports no clear evidence or official claim from other states agencies about Durrant, accused in Ephraim Dai Paragonah attack. Durrant said to be the target of a Reno manhunt. Officers detained him last week but custody status awaiting trial decision. Clues on the second assailant remain missing.
Muncy Neward Rowley returns as principal speaker at the Ward Sacrament Meeting Saturday afternoon at 2 p m. A leadership meeting followed in Parowan. ward officers urged to attend. Parowan East Ward holds a bazaar Saturday to raise funds with aprons quilts pies and cookies for sale. Relief Society events include a bazaar beginning at 3 30 p m featuring quilts and treats.
The Utah Parks Company, a Union Pacific subsidiary, and the Department of the Interior announce a group concession agreement covering Grand Canyon Nation al Park Zion and Bryce Canyon. The deal, Dec 1948 to Jan 1, 1948 period, sets a framework for future fee schedules and park concessions across all phases. Bryce contract ends Nov 31, 1948 with other agreements continuing.
Parewan High School students present Here We Go Again a three act comedy on December 22 directed by Mrs. Hendrickson. Fifty three girls tried out for ten female roles while three veterans and one newcomer sought male parts. Funeral services for Mrs Ida Orton Burton were held in Warowan East Ward Chapel with Ward Bishopric directing. The program featured soloists Ruth D. Orton and a double mixed quartet, with burial at Parowan City Cemetery conducted by Carit Funeral Home. Attendees included people from Ogden Provo Fillmore Beaver Cedar City Paragonah and Summit.
Iron County residents vote December 1 on a large school expansion plan aimed at improving facilities and opportunities for children. The district will tackle the most urgent needs first, with survey input from the State Department and phased work throughout the district.

Ip made three of a kind for Pryce and LaVinna Adams when the stork delivered a boy early Monday at the County Hospital. The infant weighed 7 lbs 5 oz. Linda Kay O'Brien, from Elmendroff Field Alaska, arrives as cradle news to Lieut Pat and Marcia Thornton O'Brien. Marcia Thornton is Parowan native daughter of Wm. Thornton and Eva Bentley Thornton, a 20th grandchild for the Thorntons. Norman Mickelson and Glenna Garner Mickelson greet a newborn son in St. George, as Norman studies in Flagstaff, with the mother and baby staying there with Ray Garner.
The Colonial Studios of Las Vegas Nevada held a baby photo contest in Parowan. Grand prize went to Clinton Bentley fourteen months old, son of Garry and Mrs. Bentley. Four other age-group winners were Jerry Trimer, Robert Mercer, Loraine Steiner, and Lynda Ann Stubbs. Photos are available at Miriam’s Style Shop.
Thanksgiving gatherings feature many Cedar City and Parowan residents. Families visit from Salt Lake City Beaver Lakeview Oregon and Ogden while Marion Haberman works in Wyoming as a field welder and Kent Dalton sustains a washing machine injury.
Joseph E. Richards 66 prominent Utah lawyer educator and Church leader native of Parowan died Saturday in a Salt Lake hospital from heart ailment. He was born Oct 30 1882 in Parowan and educated in Parowan and Salt Lake City. A University of Utah graduate he taught in Freddinia Parowan Summit County and LDS schools and served as federal prohibition administrator 1921 to 1927. He married RoMay Oliphant in 1929 and is survived by his widow three sisters and one brother. Funeral services and burial were in Salt Lake City Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Thorn of Parowan celebrate 61 years together since their Nov 17 1887 marriage in Parowan with endowments at St George Temple. Lifelong Parowan ward members, they raised 14 children 42 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Bart W Morten sen of Parowan announce the engagement of their daughter Florence to Norman Wayne Romberger of Cedar City son of Mr George Romberger of South Gate California. Vows set for December 8 at the 5 George Temple with a reception in Parowan. Florence active in Parowan High School journalism and art. employed by Mt States Telephone in Cedar City. Romberger a World War II Navy veteran. graduate of Branch Agricultural College. Plan a Cedar City home as he continues engineering work.
County Treasurer Mr Clair Hulet announces that all General Property Taxes become delinquent at 12:00 noon on Tuesday November 30 1948.
The BAC athletic council outlined a new method for season and individual game tickets. Applications for seven home games must be postmarked by December 4 with checks for 7.50 per ticket, limited to two per person. A December 8 public drawing will assign 200 reserved seats and press seats. remaining East side seats will be distributed by the draw.
The Utah State Fair Association seeks entries to crown Utah’s champion food preserver. A silver trophy from the National Garden Institute will be awarded at the Association of Utah Fairs and Livestock Shows, likely in February 1949. Eligible entrants canned and stored large amounts of homegrown produce. entry blanks available through the Home Demonstration Agent in the Cedar City Federal Building. entries due by December 15.
Graveside services for Private Mark J. Wilcock were held at Parowan Cemetery with three prayers and musical numbers. He died October 9 1944 near Florence Italy after being wounded in action while serving as squad leader in Company I 338th Infantry. Born January 9 1924 in Parowan he is survived by parents and siblings, grandparents, and other local relatives.
The High School Mechanics Shop will be open Wednesday December 1 at 8 00 PM to begin work on Christmas items and to repair farm machinery and equipment. This will continue through the winter. Suitable dates and times can be arranged at this first meeting.
A 2500 word Country Gentleman report titled They Take Care of Their Own says the Mormon Welfare Program could sustain 840,000 Mormons during atomic war for years. It notes 110 storehouses stockpile food fuel clothing bedding and furniture and cites the 1948 Columbia River flood as Welfare’s greatest feat with 70 tons of aid arriving within hours.
