Parowin students enjoy the expanded tennis court finished by the local recreation committee. The project adds a nine foot cement retaining barrier to flood the court as an ice skating pond in winter. Future plans include extending the west side for outdoor basketball and cement surfacing next spring.
Iron County Agent Wallace D Sjoblom hosted RoW Smith of Grascelli Chemicals Dupont San Francisco to help set up a sheep feeding trial on the Grant Hunter farm in Cedar Valley. Two groups of 100 sheep each compare a control with Phenethiazine drenched treatment to measure internal parasite control and weight changes through market time over about nine to ten weeks. Continuous weighing and lab techniques will assess worm control efficacy.
Paragonah voters cast 142 ballots in a Tuesday election with 54 straight Republican and 18 straight Democratic ballots. Unofficial counts show candidates including Dr. Henry A. Parowan Jigh is among nine Utah schools entering the American Homemaker of Tomorrow national search. Senior high school girls graduating this year are eligible to participate, with state winners receiving a $1,500 college scholarship and a Trifari designed golden jeweled pin.
Parowan High School auditorium gains new drapes, cyclorama, living room set and painting. Teachers voted to spend 1500 from a state emergency fund to bolster salaries. Iron County School Board matched funds, with more projects planned across the county this year.
National Art Week is recognized in Parowan from November 1 to 7 with displays in local business houses. The exhibit features works by Dean Fawrett and other renowned painters, plus pieces by current and former Parowan students. Committee heads are Mrs Ruth Lyman Jenson, a 1954 PHS graduate, and Mrs Iona Topham, an elementary teacher.
Harriet A Heap, born January 5 1888 in Escalante Garfield County, died after a heart attack following a fall and extended hospital stay. Funeral services planned Friday at 2 pm in the Patowan Third Wath Chapel under Bishop Howard M Adame, with survivors including two sons Ralph and Allen Heap, four daughters, twenty grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren, plus siblings and many relatives.
Vandalism issues in Hallowern were addressed as student officers led a daylong effort at the Recorder's desk with Nelson Taylor presiding. About 17 arrests were reported for traffic violations, fines totaling 15 dollars collected, and a council committee cleaned gravel and debris from streets and a school tennis court, gaining practical municipal governance experience.
Macit Karabiyik a 25 year old irrigation specialist from Konya Turkey stayed six weeks in Parowan as a guest of J Harold Mitchells. He will study irrigation methods and soil conservation in Utah and enroll at Utah State Agricultural College for six months. He plans to continue to other Western states. He improves his English and speaks at local groups before returning to Turkey possibly with plans to visit the United States again.
Funeral services for Clayton L. Barton were held in Parapenah Ward Chapel with Bishop Victor Kh. Robinson presiding. Military rites by the American Legion and numerous relatives and friends attended from Paragonah, Orderville, Kanab, Panguitch, Cedar City, Las Vegas, and beyond, with songs, prayers, and a cemetery service concluding the rites.
The Republican sweep in Iron County included votes for Congress Dist 1 Dixon R over Granger D, state and county offices with unopposed incumbents W Clair Rowley and Hillman Dalley. Notable tallies show Arthur Nelson R over Haldon Christensen D for sheriff and a large turnout with late tabulation.
Amen CC Hatch was guest speaker at the local American Legion Auxiliary meeting. Mr and Mrs Hatch visited UN headquarters in New York City and contributed insights. Miss Mary Etta Stubbs gave a belated Girls State report. Special music by Heber Lund and Mary B Orton presided.
A2e Larry G. Heap of Eglin Air Base Florida took part in a routine assignment at Hill Air Force Base last week. His Utah visit included his mother Mrs. Lillian II Heap and brother Robert of Parowan plus Theron Heap family and nephew Gerran Parry of Cedar City during their Ogden trip.
Parowan High School parents teachers and students council discussed issues from the first PTA meeting of the year. Topics included scheduling for band and athletics, with suggestions to move band to 8 am or noon and changes to credit rules for athletes juggling sports and classes.
