Parowan High School awards scholarships to five seniors
Five Parowan High School seniors received scholarships at a school assembly. Kendall Lister received $250 from Standard Oil via Todd. Gary Rummler earned the BYU scholarship. Rayma Thornton got the PTA high scholastic award. John V. Penson awarded the Thorpes Motor scholarship to BAC. Jennie Dunton received the PTA elementary education scholarship. Certificates of merit were given in multiple departments and new student body officers were sworn in.

A seven pound five ounce boy was born Monday evening at Iron County Hospital to first time parents J Reith and Maxine Dalton Barton of Cedar City. Maternal grandparents are Harrel Dalton of Purowan and Hazel Flurtone of Reaver.

Real Estate In Iron County To Be Re Classified
Real estate in Iron County outside cities will be re classified for equalization of valuations for assessment between counties. A Cedar City meeting included R C Pixton from the State Tax Commission. FE Ray Lyman Carlos Jones and Lyman E Levy were named to assist. East central and west portions assigned to Lyman Jones and Levy. Post reclassification, county commissioners and the state tax commission will set fair values for each real estate class for next year’s rolls. County expenses cover tax commission representative during the process. The board planned a Parowan tax sale and Cedar City meeting on June 1 for equalization matters.

Former Resident Nominated as Small Defense Administration Chief
Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated William F. D. Mitchell a Denver businessman to run the Small Defense Plant Administration. Mitchell, born in Parowan 1912, is son of J. Clayton and Irene Mitchell and has ties to Salt Lake City. He studied at Parowan and Utah, served in the Army Engineers in World War II, and later worked as counsel for Quickway Truck Shovel Co. His wife is Helen Dae Jarvis of Oxden.

Kayaks Down The Nile Comes To Parowan
A color motion picture titled Kayaks Down the Nile comes to Parowan on June 5 at the Parowan LDS Chapel. John M. Goddard, a 26-year-old former Mormon missionary from Salt Lake City, along with two French scientists, voyaged 42400 miles in three 14-foot kayaks to document the journey. Goddard appears in person to narrate and discuss the expedition, raising funds for the Stake recreation hall via ticket sales at the door.
