Radio activity in Porowen and nearby area surged fourfold compared with Gloger readings. The spike occurred about 14 hours after the Yucca Flat atomic blast in Nevada and six hours after nearby detonations were deactivated, according to officials.
Sandra Robinson and Richard Tattersall announce their engagement with plans for a June wedding. The bride is a Parowan High School student and 4-H active, while Tattersall, a Beaver native, is a Korean War veteran and graduate of Neavor High. Family and friends gathered for a shower at Parowan as local concerns about atomic fallout and radiation effects from nearby tests prompted caution and public health remarks.
Parowan celebrated three inductees bound for military service this May with a farewell party in the Third Ward Chapel. Honorees Owen J. Holyoak Don Clinton Lowder and Jay Winter attended with families as speakers and musicians offered patriotic numbers and prayers led by Ken dall Gurr and Max S. Dalley. The event featured trio performances and organ solos before Benediction by John W. Bentley.
Mr and Mrs James Park and their children Betty Jean and Jimmie 8 arrived in Parowan for a three month vacation from their three year residence in Sanacaqua Chill South America where he was a Braden Copper Company foreman Mrs Park nee Mary Harris daughter of Claude Harris of Parowan They lived in McGill Nevada before leaving for Latin America The return trip went by air across the continent to Rio de Janeiro Brazil then San Juan Puerto Rico Detroit and a new car back to Utah They left South America as winter began to align with spring in the south promising nearly two years of perpetual summer The Park family lives in a mountaintop area with about 100 white families The climate is described as delightful with access to a good school hospital and church They all speak Spanish fluently Shopping is mainly done in San Diego Chile with trips every three or four months Food clothing and other commodities are noted.
Three Parowan students attending the BAC were among award recipients at a Sunday convocation in the L D S Institute. Four outstanding students received yearlong H A C studies scholarships funded by Cedar City groups during commencement week. James E Morris won the exiet science scholarship from the Southern Utah Clinic. Joan Adele Adams secured a Baceca Club donation for a college scholarship. Clair Morris earned the elementary education scholarship from the BNS BAC Alumni Association.
Bruce Decker former Parowan resident and Parowan High School graduate was named to the PHS physical education department by the Iron County Board of Extension. He will return as instructor after teaching at Cedar City and a year in Korea with the Wyoming National Guard. He served in World War II and played six man football. he studied at Dixie Junior College and the BAC Cedar City, and later earned a major in physical education. He coached at Grace, Utah for a year before his military service. He is married to Adele and they have a daughter.
Funeral services were held in Parowan for Parley L. Jensen 65 former Parowan resident killed in a Tuesday automobile accident near Ruth Nevada. Bishop Karl Mitchell officiated with music by Mary Lyman and solos by LaMar Jensen and E Ray Lyman. Burial prayers and pallbearers from local families noted. Ruth Nevada visitors attended.
Fishermen traveling on opening day of the fishing season should thank Bid Clark and Ivan Johnson for enhancing the road below the dam. They donated time and used City and Day Farm equipment to improve the road and safety for travelers in our local canyons.
The Moorowan High School PTA hosted a Sunday tea for graduates their partners and parents in Recreation Hall. A pink carnation and white enamel dragon centerpiece framed a program with student performances including songs poems and readings. PTA officers arranged the event with favors for graduates and refreshments prepared by the Home Economics department.
The Junior Pentathlon at Heuinnal featured rising stars from Taliet and Gh nevonde led by Tairowins and Jimmy Hurt. Tairowins placed high in multiple events with 399 points, while Hurt clocked a fast 8.5 seconds in the 70 yard dash and set a towel pañdra mark. Stewart Adwine and Dynal Tratterman led the senior division with 2422 points, followed by 2454 and 2240 for other top finishers. Junior competitors include Jimmy Robinson and Kenyon Ulirk with strong showings.
Police investigate a burglary at Fenton's Drug Store noting a forced front door entry with crowbar. A suspect seen Sunday evening and Tuesday in Parowan is linked to the case, with a Greyhound driver reporting a watch trade attempt in Fillmore Wednesday. Detectives, Sheriff Nelson and deputies, cordon the scene while tracing a Elgin Wrist Watch and other items.
Wranglers announce Memorial Day race meet at Parowan’s BAC Field. Avitage the 24 Benigradu Ste and several riders from the Te 1s Chimeh are set to compete as the new saddle club hosts the season opener with David O. McKay delivering the address. Members anticipate strong entries and crowds over the holiday weekend as Parowan plans a major sports event.
Clair Morris son of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Morris of Parowan was elected president of the Ac Holacathoy Association. The election was announced last week by Gwyn Clark, faculty administrator. The club also lists Thelma Ekstrom of Cedar City and other officers to be chosen in the fall. Clair, a former Parewan High student, is a junior in the education school at Franch College, living with his wife Sivanne Cardon and their child in Parewan.
Obituary notes the death of Charlotte Bardstey aged 77, a native of Paragonah, at a Provo hospital. Sister of William Barton and Mrs Bardstey, the deceased milestone prompted tributes as funeral details were to continue on the back page.
Mrs Sarah L Glenn died at Salt Lake Hospital at age 77 from natural causes after a long illness. She had a long record of church and relief society service, was a charter member of the Service Star Legion, and is survived by three sons three daughters and many grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Tooste Think Ward Chapel Thursday at 1 p.m.
John Goddard, a Salt Lake City native now in Los Angeles, arrives in Parowan with a moving picture presentation detailing his 4200 mile Nile River journey. He and two Frenchmen completed the river trip, recording dangers and scenes for Cedar City audiences and others who watched his show.
Alma Bettridge of St George wed J Bevin Ott son of Mr and Mrs Ott in St George Temple on May 1. Grandparents S J Whitney of Parowan attended. Reception in St George Fourth Ward Chapel. Bride wore white satin gown with lyla net yoke and beaded belt. Matron of honor Norma Bettridge. numerous bridesmaids and flower girls named. Best man Brent Hirdy. Continued on page two.
May events include High School Awari Assembly in the auditorium and Alumni Hall, with a reception afterward. Chamber of Commerce membership meeting at the Court House on May 23 at 8 pm. Parowan Seminary Graduation exercises at the temple chapel on May 24 at 8 pm. May 25 marks High School Commencement in the Third Ward with a dance to follow in Recreation Hall. The term ends May 28 with a Memorial Day feature meet sponsored by the Red AM Wranglers. post time 7:30 pm.
