Local report notes filings for county offices in a competitive cycle. Republican and Democratic candidates, including Mitchell for Clerk and Lamb for Sheriff, seek renomination while others consider run for Treasurer, County Clerk, Assessor, and higher state posts. Several incumbents face possible challengers as filing closes next week.
The Parowan Stake forwards the ward Sunday School conference theme History and Development of your Sunday School. Wards are urged to chart all ward superintendents from the first organization to now with dates pictures and data. A prize will be awarded by the Stake Sunday School Board for the most complete chart. Judges include President Wick Palmer Mrs Loretta Riddle and Morris Buchanan. Charts will be judged June 23 in the Second Ward Chapel Cedar City at 3:15 p.m. for the next Stake Sunday School convention. A tentative program and ward conference date will be mailed, and ward conference information will be filed for a ward history to be sent to the General Board.
The program for the Latter Day Saint sacrament meeting Sunday afternoon May 26 features talks by Nell Bentley Donna Joan Dattery Cleone Johnson Florence Corry and Ramona Mitchell with scriptural readings Psalm 68 and 4 and Beatitudes, prayers, and songs sung by the Girls Chorus and a girls trio. Stake Leader Eloise Dobrusky leads the session with Decker conducting and Norine Mortensen giving the closing prayer.
Notice invites sixth to twelfth graders to the Parowan High School music room next Monday May 27 at 9 am for summer class plans and instrument procurement. Beginners should plan to buy used instruments. help is sought from town residents with instruments for sale. Later notices will address current players. Mr and Mrs Owen Davis attended Parowan graduation. Ace Haycock hosted a birthday gathering with friends and relatives at her home, refreshments by Mrs Mitchell.
The Democratic Party reorganized at the county convention held in the county courthouse on Saturday evening. Wm S Bub Leigh was named county chair man to succeed Emedt Macfarlane, with Augusta Admis re elected as vice chairwoman and other officers chosen. Sixteen delegates were selected to attend the State convention at Salta, with full voting rights. Grover A. Giles gave the keynote speech.
Parowan City Mayor J E Ray Lyman proclaims a half holiday on Wednesday May 20 1848 extend from 1 o'clock to allow citizens to clean up Vermilion Castle Recreation Park in Parowan Canyon. Wartime restrictions limit maintenance funds as Dixie National Forest cannot fully manage the site. Local residents urged to volunteer that afternoon to beautify and revitalize the park.
Miss Maxine Lund daughter of AJ and Mrs Terry Lund has received a call to serve a mission for the LDS church in the northwestern states. She will leave for her field early in September after graduating from Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City this Friday morning. Lund has led the student body as president for the past year and joined Lambda Delta Sigma and Phi Rho Omega sororities. A graduate of the LIDS Institute and Parowan High School she will continue at the District Health office until departure.
On May 20 the City of Parowan plans a cleanup and picnic at Vermilion Castle Park starting at 1 PM. The event, designated a half holiday by the mayor, aims to clear the grounds as Forest officials lack a caretaker. Transportation from Library Corner will be provided. families should bring tools if available and a picnic lunch for after-silence activities.
Parowan unit aired a radio program at 4 45 pm on KSUB as part of a series by Legion Auxiliaries. Barbara M Adams spoke on Poppy Day with a male quartet Bruce Decker Robert Rowley Homer Whitney and Raymond Wiltsey performing. The event supports Memorial Poppy sales next Saturday to fund state and national work and veteran employment in hospitals. Nellie Wiscombe of Mapleton Utah visited Thales Brown family. Augusta Adams spent days in Salt Lake City with I Lowe Barton and Paragonah residents.
Mack Fenton opens Fentons Pharmacy fourth store in Fairbanks Alaska with his wife aiding. The new shop includes a photo developing laboratory and merchandise from the States. Other Fenton stores include Kanab and St George locations run by Nellie and Nelson Fenton.
The Parowan Chamber of Commerce plans study of a community pool with a committee led by J W Moore to assess costs and upkeep amid material shortages and wartime funding limits. Forest Service funds remain tight. a July 1 expectation for more staff at Vermilion Castle and Panguitch Lake camps was noted.
Newell B Weight music instructor at Parowan High School for four years is among 234 graduates receiving degrees at BYUs 70th annual commencement. Exercises in June in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium mark President Howard S McDonald’s first commencement since taking office last June. Weight has pursued his Masters degree during the past year.
A full East ward chapel crowd attended Parowan High School’s twenty seventh graduation last Friday evening. Forty graduates received diplomas including three ex service members. Dr George Hanson of Brigham Young University spoke. Principal A C Hatch presented the graduates. Samuel Abbott of the county school board awarded the diplomas.
