Citizens face a final chance to voice opinions on curb and gutter plans for Main Street. The hearing, arranged by the mayor, will be held Tuesday at the Courthouse to gauge taxpayer views and address public concerns.
Parowan Elementary School showcased a song program May 6 with sixth graders performing a patriotic medley about U S history. Principal Frank E Lyman directed the mass event with teachers Boyd Mitchell Virginia Lowe Marybelle Fenton and others guiding groups. performances included Indian song Columbus Faith of Our Fathers Yankee Doodle Star Spangled Banner and Battle Hymn among dances and movements.
A Federal old survivors insurance program notice urges qualified workers to file applications for retirement or benefits. Ruesch, manager of the Social Security Administration, headings at 163 West North Jimh address the public. Benefits may be paid to insured workers at any age and to eligible spouses, with applications required to be payable. Benefits are limited to three months from the date of the application unless delayed. details appear on page four.
Miss Anna Mae Peterson wed Anthon A. Perry son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Perry of Las Vegas Nevada in a May 8 ceremony at West Ward Relief Society Rooms. Bishop Karl Mitchell presided with family and close friends in attendance. Reception featured master of ceremonies Dee Walker and decorations by Luella Dalton with floral cake.
The Legion Auxiliary held a Mothers Day Tea in the West Ward Relief Society rooms to honor gold star mothers and World War I veterans. Under unit president Bue�talla Halterman the program included color advancement, songs, a group rendition of America, a prayer by Chaplain Lilly Ward, community singing led by Sarah Lowder, tributes by Jean Hendrickson and Marian Decker, remarks by Mrs. Annie C. Esplin, Libbie Perry, and Ellen Bulloch, with a closing solo by Adelle Holyock. Refreshments followed as 50 guests received corsages. spring flower decorations were contributed by Verda Adams and Mayme Orton.
A North end town group led by Coach Claude Adams challenges all men from the South end to a baseball game next Tuesday at 6:00 p m on the High School diamond. Equipment is available and both sides should warm up by six. Everyone, including women and children, is urged to attend as supporters. The Court House street marks the dividing line.
Barbara Matheson formerly of Parowan now of Salt Lake City married T G Inglis of Salt Lake City in Elko Nevada on April 22. The bride is daughter of the late Simon A Matheson and has worked in the County Treasurer's office and later as chief cashier in Union Pacific Depot cafeteria Salt Lake City. The groom is a prominent Salt Lake City business man and certified public accountant for the O P Skaggs System. They returned to Salt Lake City after a brief Nevada honeymoon.
Parowan laid to rest U S Marine Private Earl Duvall Hyatt, the town’s first returned war dead, with military rites by the American Legion and local ward bishopric. The service featured a guard of honor, a three volley salute, and Taps, with the flag presented to Hyatt’s mother.
Matilda Jane Ward Bettridge, 77, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday May 8 at her Parowan home after a three month illness. Born March 24, 1871 in Parowan, she was a lifelong resident and a devoted LDS Church member known for genealogical work and handicrafts. She married William Bettridge in 1893. he preceded her in death. Survived by four sons and one daughter, Elizabeth Wiltsey and Webster Bettridge of Parowan, and Henry, among others.
James E. Applegate, 76, Parowan area farmer and livestock man, died Tuesday evening at Iron County hospital after a partial bowel obstruction and age-related conditions. Survived by eight children, 36 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and three sisters. Funeral services held today at Parowan West Ward Chapel, burial in City Cemetery.
Parowan Stake Aaronic Priesthood will hold a pilgrimage linked to the Spanish Trails Association marker ceremony near the Heaps property on Saturday May 15 at 3 p.m. Stake members are urged to participate with musical numbers and ward leadership to bring many priests. Afterward attendees will gather at City park for refreshments and games.
Dr J C Moffitt a noted educational author will address the Seminary graduates Sunday at 8 p m in East Ward Chapel. He holds degrees from Brigham Young University and the University of Chicago and has served since 1926 in Provo City Schools rising to Superintendent. He has lectured at Utah and Arizona institutions and written The History of Public Education in Utah.
Parowan’s oldest resident Maria Coombs Taylor marked her 98th birthday on Sunday May 9. Relatives visited as she rested, with daughter Eva caring for her and a visit from grandson Taylor Parkinson of Benjamin Utah accompanied by his father George Parkinson of Beaver. Born May 9 1850 in Columbus Illinois she moved to Parowan in 1860 and married George Taylor in 1872. survivors include George Taylor of New York City and Frank and Eva Taylor of Parowan.
Darwin Gilger and Miss Hilda Limb wed in a double ring ceremony at the home of Mr and Mrs Hugh Gilger in Parowan. Bishop Earl Mitchell officiated. The bride wore a pink chiffon gown and corsage of apple blossoms. Basil Gilger served as best man. The couple, both students, plan to live in Parowan this summer and a reception is set for May 22.
Alumni of Parowan High announce Thursday events for the coming week. Initiation of 1948 graduates occurs at 2 p m in the school auditorium, banquet at 8 p m in the grade school, followed by a dance in the gym. Written ballot for officers precedes the banquet with a full slate on blue and gold tickets. Neta Taylor of Taylors Cafe leads arrangements with Barbara Burt and others assisting.
