Public hearing on curb and gutter extension on Han Street

Citizens and property owners are invited to attend a Saturday night meeting at 8 o clock in the county court to discuss a proposed curb and gutter project along four blocks of Han Street. The issues include aligning new curb with existing, maintaining sidewalk space, and who should bear the costs. City officials seek suggestions and cost estimates from attendees.

Descent of Utah musician Thomas Durham celebrated in Salt Lake City

Mettie D Robinson Mrs J D Orton and Wilford tum attended a Salt Lake City reunion honoring Thomas Durham pioneer Utah musician and Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints figure. About 40 descendants gathered at Lion House for a dinner and stories of Parowan days. Durham’s sons and grandsons performed and sang two tunes Mother I Have Heard Sweet Music and A Tender Recollection.

B A C Coaching School Planned At Cedar City

The Branch Agricultural College at Cedar City announces a spring coaching school to aid Physical Education Departments in Southern Utah and Nevada. The intensified program centers on football led by E. L. Dick Romney of USAC and basketball led by Vadal Peterson from the University of Utah. The course aims to ease travel and costs for regional coaches and bring top talent to the area.

Parowan Harvest Crew To Lead Texas Grain Drive

One of the Wests largest custom harvesting outfits, led by Parowan youths Claude E. Burton Howard M. Adams Emerson Adams Ivan Johnson and Kent Pendleton, leaves May 15 for Texas with four combines five trucks and a 15 man crew. They will harvest in Texas Oklahoma Kansas Nebraska and the Dakotas, sending a machine back in August. C C (Andy) Burton stays to operate Parowan Service Company. Vernon Texas is their first stop.

Granddaughter of Parowan Woman Gains Film Fame

Mrs. Nellie Pritchard reports granddaughter Helen Francell Coutts daughter of Warren L and Frankie Dalley Coutts of Oakland has rising status in motion pictures and dramatics. The Pasadena Playhouse alumnus acts sings and dances and serves as Deanna Durbin’s double on location in Washington DC for the film Washington Girl. She often visited Parowan with her grandparents.

Parowan Literary Club Plans District Convention Entertainment

At a Tuesday meeting in Mrs. Georgia B. Mitchell s home the Parowan Literary Club outlined plans to host Federated Women s Clubs of the Southern Utah District for a June convention in Parowan. Committees were named for a business meeting election noon luncheon and program with district officers and local club leaders forming the general committee.

Conoco Station Changes Ownership on Parowan Main Street

The Conoco Service Station on Parowan Main Street changed hands on May 1 as W. Scott Mitchell bought it from Demar Bowman. Mitchell, who owns adjoining property, plans extensive improvements to modernize and enlarge the building. Farr (Whitney) Orton remains the chief daytime operator at the station.

P H S Alumni Plan Spring Activities at Parowan High

The Parowan High School Alumni Association led by Claude Orton plans spring events. An assembly and initiation for graduates are set for May 20 with a banquet and ball in the evening. Homer Adams chairs the assembly, Mrs Floreen Adams the initiation, and officers include Virginia Lowe Alia Adams Reed Orton and Lyle Haberman. Reservations with Mrs Alta Adams by May 15 are urged at 1.50 per person. Continued on page four.

Post Office Moves to New Earl Mitchell Building This Week

Parowan Post Office will relocate this weekend to the Earl Mitchell building just south of Parowan Mercantile Store after approval from Washington. Lyceum final program set for May 12 at 5:00 PM in East Ward Chapel features The Yankee Singers and local talent including Ralph Marsden, June Decker, Louise Marsden, Marian Decker, and others led by W Clair Rowley with J Harrold Mitchell as secretary treasurer.

Original Parowan Stake Divided At Conference

At Cedar City stake conference the Original Parowan Stake was divided into Parowan Stake and new Cedar Stake of Zion. W. Clair Rowley was named president of Parowan Stake with J. Harold Mitchell and R. Taylor Miller as counselors. The division included renaming and reorganization of ward lines and stake officers.

Parowan Music Festival Thanks for Community Help

Principal A C Hatch expresses gratitude for help at the Regional Music Festival held in Parowan. Food for 1680 participants and drivers was supplied by Parowan East West and Paragonah Ward Relief Societies with support from the Chamber of Commerce and American Legion. Officials and students praised food, crowd handling, and punctual scheduling. Special thanks go to Home Economics staff and ward society members for luncheon planning and execution.

Impressive Military Services Held For Cpl. Dewey Topham

A large crowd from Paragonah and nearby cities attended May 5 graveside services for Corporal Dewey Topham whose remains returned from France. The American Legion Post led the rites with Bishop Gilbert Robinson directing. Ex servicemen formed a guard of honor. pallbearers were four male relatives. Speakers included Thomas A. Robinson. music by a choir and a male quartet. Taps, a three volley salute, and the flag presentation to Dewey's mother accompanied the service.
