Local businessman narrowly escapes after appendicitis attack
E J King, manager of Parowan Mercantile and a Kanab store, drove a truck from Kanab to Parowan while suffering an acute appendicitis attack. He reached Springdale distressed, lost consciousness, and arrived at Iron County Hospital around 7 p.m. where an operation removed the infected appendix. He was reported to be improving Thursday.

Dedicatory marker recalls first wagon on Old Spanish Trail in Iron County
On May 15 1848 the first wagon over the Old Spanish Trail entered Iron County Utah with 25 Mormon Battalion men returning from California. Porter Rockwell James Shaw and others converted the route into a road and 50 wagons followed that fall. A commemorative marker near Parowan recalls the Southern California Emigrant Route and the Spaniards prior use of the trail.
