The Iron County School Board offered new teaching contracts to all district teachers at its regular meeting on Monday. Officials said early offers help fill potential vacancies and reduce difficulty in staffing, a problem encountered in previous years.
The Parowan ward relief societies honored the eldest and youngest members across the First Second and Third Wards during Annual Day. Guests from Summit and Enoch Wards attended as plans for next year’s calendar and school renovations were discussed amid readings films and musical portions.
The American Legion Auxiliary will sponsor three immunization clinics for Whooping Cough Diphtheria Tetanus and Smallpox. The first clinic is March 23 at 9 15 AM upstairs at the County Courthouse. Vaccines include Smallpox and Tetanus for all. DPT for children under eight with fees } 35 cents Smallpox, 65 cents DPT booster, 2.00 DPT series three, 35 cents Tetanus booster, 1.00 Tetanus series three. For details call Mrs Webster Bettridge or the Public Health Nurse.
Miss Jetta Jean Rowley remains critical at Salt Lake General Hospital following brain surgery last week. Her father Ted Rowley returned home and reported slight signs of improvement, lifting hopes for a complete recovery.
A massive rock slide hit the Parowan hydro electric plant pipeline about 2:30 am Friday, destroying about 40 feet of penstock and spraying water 200 feet into the air. City manager Max Hendrickson said damage exceeded 500 dollars while power service largely continued by switching load to Southern Utah Power.
Parowan High School Rams defeated Dixie Flyers 53 to 49 to win the Region Six basketball title at Fillmore. Cedar City Redmen beat Millard 54 to 44 for third. Parowan, Dixie, and Cedar advance to the Class B state tournament in Provo, where Parowan loses 47 to 44 to Union in their opening game.
Miss Darlene Hyatt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alma Hyatt, spent the weekend in Circleville as a guest of Miss Terressa Dalton. She joined her brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Delos Dalton on a trip to Piute County.
Mrs Herman FE Bayles remains in satisfactory condition after major surgery in Salt Lake City and will convalesce with son Ralph Bayles in Capitol City. Veron Decker enters Veterans Hospital for chronic illness. Lloyd Guyman of Henderson Nevada visits Parowan. John W Bentley hosts dinner for Providence visitors David Hutchinson and family. Lloyd Murphey departs for Oregon. Bentley party to Salt Lake City for Carson Roeper and Lucile Connary wedding at Memory Grove with Hyatt Bentley best man. Jess Guyman visits East with Columbus Ohio and Louisville Ky stays planned.
Mr and Mrs Frank Decker were business visitors to Salt Lake City last weekend. They returned home Monday night and left the next morning for Lancaster California where Frank has prospects of a job. David Orton student at the USAC at Logan combined business in this area during the week with a visit with his parents the Claud Ortons.
A March 15 snow survey by Iron County Soil Conservation Service reports higher snow depth and water content in Parowan watersheds than 1954. Yankee Flat shows 29.0 inches snow and 10.0 moisture versus 25.8 and 7.6 in 1954. Ed Ward Flat 20.6 inches and 7.9 moisture versus 18.1 and 5.6 in 1954. Long term averages 39.2 inches and 11.9 moisture. 1942–54. The 1955 readings indicate moisture near long term average but snow below.
Hettie Anne Jones daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Jones of Paragonah is named Homemaker of Tomorrow at Parowan High School. She earned top marks on a homemaking aptitude exam and will receive a golden pin cookbooks for her school and a chance to name Utahs candidate for Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. Utahs state winner enters a national finals among 33 schools. A 1356 participant total supported by General Mills, with a 1500 dollar scholarship for the state winner and a trip to Washington DC Williamsburg VA and Philadelphia. All-American winner scholarship rises to 5000 dollars and Britannica set goes to her school. John V Benson of Provo visited Parowan over the weekend and INauditing family. his BYU football ties noted.
Mrs Elsie Colburn of Salt Lake City has been a guest of Mrs Lucy Hyatt and the Charles F Bentleys during the week.
A note to readers explains Keith Halterman the Lineype operator caught a flu bug and was mostly bedbound this week. The editor admits not knowing Lineype operations until now and says next week will work to bring out the issue.
Southern Utah Power faces a proposed rate increase raise in Parowan and Cedar Valleys. Farmers claim pumping costs at risk of prohibition and loss while Parowan City officials argue wholesale pricing and load-sharing ideas. The Utah Public Service Commission heard testimony Saturday in Cedar City with ten days for written briefs before a decision.
Mrs Claude Lister reviewed the book Come the Comrade by Alexander Orem for Parowan Literary Club Wednesday night. She opened with a geographical and historical description of Russia. Anna and Eva Adams hosted at their home with special guests Mrs Norma Adams and Mrs Elsie Colburn. The Misses Allyson Adams and Andrea Adams assisted their aunts.
Homer Adams announces driver license examinations will be held next Friday at the Iron County Court House. The exam runs from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist those wishing to take the test.
Mel Hyatt of Salt Lake City and a former Parowan resident visited on business regarding the sale of his West Parowan home. The John Hyatt home was sold to Guy Edis of El Cajon California, marking a transfer of the property.
Parowan City Council voted to ban pinball devices citing state law and local complaints about children spending lunch money on games. The meeting also covered cemetery lot assessments, a new caretaker contract, power rate studies, revenue bonds for a power plant, a five year race track contract, and water loading access for livestock trucks near Keith Robinson residence. Fire hydrants will not be used further to prevent damage.
Congress man Henry Aldous Dixon nominated E Ray Lyman Parowan D C Schmutz Cedar City and Harold Anderson Fillmore to the National Rivers and Harbors Congress a nonpartisan group promoting sound development of the nation's land and water resources.
Red Cross instructors from Parowan conduct home nursing classes at Enoch this week under Civil Defence aims of one trained woman per home. Originally 16 women joined, prompting two more instructors. Instructors include Mrs Reed Orion Mrs Sarah Dean Smith Mrs Rhetta Deecker and Mrs Mary O Topham. Other Parowan women certified are Mrs Mary Alice Graff and Mrs Jenness Marsden. Additional classes may be offered if there is demand, contact Mrs Edna S Hatchcharman or co chairman Mrs Charles F Bentley.
A baby boy named Craig Burton Bentley arrived March 11 at Iron County Hospital, weighing six pounds ten ounces. He will be a playmate for 18 month old Donald Ray. Proud grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Burton and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bentley of Parowan, with great grandparent honors claimed by Mrs. Zella Worthen of Panguitch. The mother is Frankie Lou Burton.
Mr and Mrs Alma Hyatt announce the arrival of a granddaughter at Iron Co Hospital on March 14. The child completes a trio of daughters for Lee and Yvonne Hyatt Ashdown of Cedar City with Anna Rae and Joyce among relatives. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Leon ard Ashdown of Cedar City share honors, while Mrs Lucy Hyatt of Parowan holds great grandparent credits.
The party is spending their spring vacation in Southern California and are guests of the Frank Lymans during their stay in Los Angeles.
George Stevens celebrated his birthday Tuesday evening with eighteen family members present. The gathering centered on visiting and reminiscences. Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Laben Burt and Mrs. Lidia Patterson of Beaver and Mrs. Bertha Topham of Paragoneh.
The Second Ward Relief Society will hold a regular literary lesson on Tuesday March 22. The lesson is titled Victorian Harmonists. A quilt will also be worked on. All members are urged to attend.
Spent part of last week visiting their son Jay and his family in Spanish Fork and with Mr and Mrs Grover Orisn in Payson.
