Scientist Slices Diamonds From Carbon Under Pressure
Samuel S. Kistler, dean at the University of Utah, helped pioneer artificial diamond synthesis before World War II. Modern labs report creating diamonds by using ordinary carbon under extreme pressure and heat, yielding up to a third of the test material as diamonds. Early attempts produced sand grain sized stones, but recent work aims to mass produce gems larger than a typical woman's ring.
