Parowan residents will view the Utah film This Is Utah showing vocational education activities. Two free showings are set for Tuesday March 8 at 3 PM and 6 PM in the Parowan school auditorium with a state education official present to explain the scenes.
Mr and Mrs Merlin Hunt announce the marriage of daughter Wanda Hunt to Clarence Benson Jr son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Benson of Parowan. The ceremony took place Saturday evening March 27 at the brides parents home with Bishop Victor R Robinson officiating before about sixty relatives and friends.
Parowan residents helped raise nearly 300 dollars on the first day for the Red Cross quota. Bain Matheson of American Legion Post 20 organized the drive. Citizens who missed the drive should contact Karla Hulet at Parowan Mercantile for membership.
Art Lowder and his father William J. Lowder spent the week in Long Beach California for business and pleasure as they scout living quarters and prospects. Art plans to move his family there and attend a night trade school while entering local business. The Lowder home was purchased by Richard Tullis and his wife, who sold their home to Robert and Mrs. Robinson. Mr. and Mrs. McKay Smith enjoyed a Salt Lake City trip visiting D. E. Fwithriman and Bell Adams of Paragonah. The Smiths were joined by William T. Davenport and his wife, who stayed on. Nellie Bentley and her son Hyatt spent part of the week in Salt Lake City. LaMar and Elaine Duke of Provo visited the B. E. Whitneys in town. El Rhea Clark returned home with her mother, Violet Clark, after working nearby. Lorin and Barbara Smith hosted Ellis Hunt and family in St George, while Joan Bayles, a BYU student, came home from Seattle to greet her family. Mrs. Ernest Orton returned from St. George where she attended the funeral of Betty Benson Seegmiller. the Johnsons continue square dancing and were featured on a New Mexico television broadcast as the Golden Age Couple. The Johnsons, Lena Benson of Parowan, participate in St George square dancing and a recent jamboree. Pvt Garth Gilger is back at Fort Ord after visiting his wife in Mobile Alabama. he hoped to meet her in Parowan for furlough but she was unable to travel.
New arrival announced February 26 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital St George. Grandparents Darwin and Hilda Gilger of Washington County, Milford maternal grandmother Limb visiting. Sister Terry age five and brother Michael twenty four share in the joy.
Charles Topham Parowan High senior chosen as ambassador based on leadership, scholarship, and extracurriculars. He leads in drama, band, and Year Book. active LDS Church member. Alternate is Lyle Dalton, Parowan Times sports editor and senior athlete. One envoy will attend March 21 to 23 in Salt Lake City with Rotarians and other state youths.
Iron County Republicans set mass meeting dates for March 22 in Parowan and Cedar City districts to elect officers and delegates. The County Republican convention will be March 31 in Parowan with reorganization of the County Central Committee and naming of state delegates.
Pfc Nils Bayles and family travel from Seattle to Parowan and then to St George as he nears overseas Army duty in the Far East. The family welcomes newborn Deborah Jean who is recovering from a digestive ailment. Bayles expects to sail around April 1.
Southern Utah Dairy company almost doubled milk handled last year per manager M B Bayles at the stockholders meeting. 1953 milk processed totaled 3,209,690 pounds vs 1,739,996 in 1952. Proceeds included 118,889.35 for 1953 production. sales totaled 162,925.08 from Grade A milk and cheese, 158,555.92 from the grocery department, 49,963.25 from feeds, and 7,599.72 from locker and meat prices.
Virginia Orton daughter of Mr and Mrs A Hills Orton of Parowan was crowned Open House queen at the College of Southern Utah concluding the school's open house events. She belongs to Phi Alpha Beta sorority which won top honors during the day. A Freshman student she plans to major in physical education.
Miss Gloria Millett wed Orson J. Orton in Las Vegas Nevada officiated by Noel A. Clark Justice of the Peace. The ceremony drew the bride and groom's families from Parowan Cedar City and Las Vegas with plans to establish a home in Las Vegas after a visit to Parowan.
The Elizabeth Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers will hold its regular meeting on Thursday March 11 at 2 p.m. at Mrs. Wm. J. Lowder's home. Mr Berta Rowley will present the lesson Your First Town Government. All ladies are invited.
The Mobile X Ray unit will visit Parowan and Paragonah on April 21 22. Mrs Alice Barton district health nurse urges residents 15 years and older to get chest X rays at no cost. The unit will set up on Main street for convenience with operation funded by Iron County Tuberculosis and Health Association Christmas seal funds.
Parowan Stake Presidency announces a Priesthood Leadership meeting Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Third Ward Chapel with Ward Clerks and Quorum officers urged to attend. The Stake High Council meets at 7 p.m. in the same building. Alma Lawrence is released as second counselor to the Bishop of Summit Ward. Ivan Dalley is appointed to the same position. Lawrence will move to Parowan to head the local elementary school. Stake representatives attended the Virgin River Welfare Conference in Cedar. Nine Stakes attended and Cedar Stake Relief Society hosted luncheon. Parowan Ward Relief Societies announce special work meetings for next week. The Second Ward Society will be in session as day.
Parowan Rams toppled Millard Eagles 54 to 38 to seize the top spot in region play. Coach Bruce Decker mixed lineups, with key contributions from Benson Clark Orton Hyatt Bentley and Dobrusky. Miller’s late rally could not overcome the early 18 point first quarter deficit.
Paratrooper Hyatt Bentley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Bentley of Paorowan, completes a year overseas with the B081st Army Unit, Quartermaster Airborne Aerial Supply and Packaging Company. Stationed in Korea and Japan, his unit shipped over 4 million pounds of supplies to UN front lines. Trained at Fort Campbell and Fort Lee, he arrived in Tacoma on February 22 and then flew to Salt Lake City to be greeted by his parents.
Graveside services were held in Paragonah Cemetery for Grant Edwards 43 born April 15 1910 son of Morgan B Edwards and Margaret Owens Edwards. The service included a choir singing Sometime We Understand and a dedicatory prayer by Bishop Victor Robinson. Funeral services were held in Delta 2nd Ward Chapel earlier that day before burial by Railroad Firemen pallbearers.
The FFA Fathers and Sons Banquet occurred Friday February 26 in the Home Economics room. Master of ceremonies Clifford Robb welcomed guests. speakers included Dr. Darrel Chase and Kendall Lister. Hettie Ann Jones received a white FFA jacket. Songs by Helen Hatch and Barbara Jane Bayles, trumpet duet by Larry King and Charles Topham. Menu featured tomato juice, roast beef, gravy, milk, whipped potatoes, buttered corn, hot rolls, fruit jello and pie ala mode.
Cooperative Snow Survey conducted March 2 by Gregory Pearson Grant Seaman and Leland Carlson shows Webster Flat and Cedar Breaks snow courses. Webster Flat depth 40.9 inches with 13.2 inches water. Cedar Breaks depth 50.3 inches with 17.4 inches water. Water contents and depths imply mountain ranges draining Parowen Valley near six tenths of average for this date.
