Miners Escape Serious Injury In Hit Run Crash

Six Parowan and Paragonah men narrowly escaped serious injury when their car veered off Tron Mountain road ten miles west of Cedar City after being struck by an unidentified red truck. Claude Jensen suffered severe injuries including a crushed left arm and leg. others had minor bruises. Vehicle left side torn, truck fled toward Cedar City as sheriff investigates.

Parowan Honors Ralph Benson as BYU Class Personality

Grace Elaine Guymon notes Parowan produced Ralph Benson, BYU student body president and top voted senior personality. Benson, son of Roy Benson and Kies Gunn Benson, excelled in music drama public speaking and student affairs at Parowan High and BYU. The town deserves credit for producing one sixth of the universitys top personalities.

Farmers To Meet Monday and Tuesday in Tren County

City Council Holds Special Meeting on Fire Equipment Bid Review

Parowut City Council met in a special session Wednesday night to review five bids for new fire equipment and to handle other matters. Mayor E. Ray Lyman said a decision will be delayed for days pending investigation and a fire engineer’s check. The council also appointed Harrell Dalton as city foreman to replace Ray H. Adams, who resigned. Dalton will assume duties Saturday.

Parowan High School students Joan Bayles Joan Adele Adams and Gaytha Lamoreaux departed with teacher Lowell Jackson for Ogden to join the Weber College debating tournament. Bayles will enter the oratory division while Adams and Lamoreaux debate the direct popular vote for president proposal.

Farmers Census In Southern Utah Gets Under Way

A survey on Utah and national farming activities begins in April led by W Max Moffitt district supervisor of the 17th Decennial Census. The agriculture questionnaire, delivered before April 1, urges farmers to submit precise records for trends in farm numbers, land area, farm property value, irrigation, drainage, grazing and soil conservation.

Miner Leonard Dalton Killed in Desert Mound Crash

Leonard Dalton aged 27 of Parowan died at about noon after a loaded truck collided with an empty truck at a Desert Mound road crossing in Ueleon County. Petterson, driver of the second truck, was seriously injured and transported to Iron County Hospital. Sheriff Arthur Nelson investigates the incident, which happened at a Desert Mound excavation site run by Utah Construction Co. Dalton, born December 31, 1922, served three years in the Eighth Air Force and is survived by his wife Greta Davenport, his mother, a daughter Mary Ann, four brothers Karl Ronald Elmer Sherman, three sisters, and several relatives. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 p.m. in Parowan West Ward Chapel. Burial in Parowan City Cemetery.

Elder Ward Taylor to Leave for Central States Mission

Elder Ward Taylor of San Diego has received a call from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints general authorities to serve in the Central States Mission. He will enter the mission home in Salt Lake City on Monday and plans a visit to Parowan before starting. He has been active in Hillcrest Ward activities since 1941, including Elders Quorum secretary and Mutual Improvement Association roles. A farewell service was held for him in his ward.
