A fragmentary history recounts Parowan and Iron County founders, detailing the winter journey from Peteetneet Creek to Willow Creek, naming leaders and hundreds of settlers. It lists camp personnel, wagons, livestock, seed grain and equipment, plus a cannon and firearms reflected in the expedition’s load. The note promises continuation next week.
Mr and Mrs Joseph A Lam announce the marriage of their daughter Gayila to Joseph L Benson of Parowan in a double ring ceremony at St George Temple with Harold Snow officiating. A July 1 reception in Paragonah School Auditorium followed with family and friends attending. Continuous coverage notes the bridal party, honored guests, performances, and post ceremony festivities.
Bishop W Leonard Evans announces Elder Ralph Marsden will share missionary experiences at Sunday’s 2 pm West Ward Sacrament Meeting. Marsden recently returned from a two year Northwestern States mission. Two musical numbers from Fleet Marsden family planned. Ward members urged to attend.
The Parowan Ward celebration on July Fourth raised about 117 for the Relief Society from food sales. Peter Gurr, J. Whitney and W. J. Adams hosted a duck pond attraction drawing crowds, bringing in a portion of the proceeds. Police support aided auxilary groups as a children's dance and grand ball drew strong attendance. thanks were extended to community members who contributed to the fundraising efforts.
Lon Fife son of Mrs. Lucile Evans Fife, a Trene High School all round athlete, will compete in the Big Nine Conference. The 200 pound six foot four inch star, Reno High student body president, discus champion and all state football and Huskies basketball center, is enrolling at Purdue on a full athletic scholarship and has traveled to Indiana for registration with the Boilermakers.
A district president writes to commend Elder Robinson for his leadership in the Central Kansas District. He notes Robinson led the Saline Branch to the highest attendance gains during a two week period and helped organize the Salina Branch. The writer hopes Robinson can remain in Latvia briefly before transfer to guide local brethren.
A bronze plaque bearing 136 World War I names from Parakouah Parowan and Summit was unveiled at the Legion memorial monument in Parowan square. Mrs Sarah Ed Bayles and Mrs Edna S Hatch led the ceremony with Legion Auxiliary and local officers conducting. The event honored war dead with a one minute moment of silence and included plaque transport and dedication by Legion president Anna T Adams. Chester Ward accepted the plaque. W Clair Rowley offered dedicatory prayer.
Mrs Emma Lowder Webb, a longtime Parowan resident born in Salt Lake City in 1863, celebrated her 87th birthday on June 30 with friends visiting at her home. Guests enjoyed refreshments as they shared memories and well wishes.
Noted entertainer George Pitts will present Highlights of Variety Saturday at 8 30 in the East Ward Chapel Parowan England born Pitts has 20 years on stage radio and TV and has taught drama in Salt Lake City He has supported LDS Church benefit events and will include sound imitations and bird calls in his act.
The Hatch family of Amos and Flora Call Hatch gathered in Parowan for a reunion. Amos and Edna Hatch hosted at their home with relatives joining from Ogden Brigham City and Wendall Jensen families. Theron Call Hatch attended with his son and other Parowan relatives were present.
The Board of Big Game Control schedules meetings from July 10 to July 13 in Beaver Salina Roosevelt Salt Lake and Ogden to hear livestockmen sportsmen and landowners on range and game conditions. An executive Salt Lake City meeting on July 21 will decide hunting for the coming season.
One of the most successful parades in area history celebrated Independence Day. About forty entries, ending with miniature floats, marched the full Main Street. First prize went to the 1770 float by Ort on Printing Co featuring George and Martha Washington. Second to Parowan Mercantile’s “Ding, Dong Bell, Pussy’s in the Well.” Third to Floral pantry “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary.” Honorable mentions went to the Hanl Ward Sunday School float and to the Wedding Cake float with a real bride and groom, plus two floats by the American Legion and Leg-O-Lily.
Two Parowan families welcome newborns on Independence Day and nearby days. Lloyd Alloway Stubbs born July Fourth at 2:30 PM, 7 lbs 4 oz, to Lloyd and Joan Alloway Stubbs. paternal grandmother Mrs Fannie B Stubbs, grandparents Mr and Mrs W H Alloway of London. Also Charles F Burtons' son born July Fourth at 7 lbs 2 oz, mother Norma Smith. grandmother Mrs Minnie Horton. sister Charleen with aunt Della Gurr. A Caesarean delivery yields a 30 lb girl to Mr and Mrs Mout Lowe. mother ill but improving. Mrs Margarite Fox reports Higley birth in Ogden May 20, with great great grandmother Mrs Isabel Mortensen.
The Wilson Lund family and Kenneth Bartons welcomed two sisters visiting from overseas. Captain F. B. Smolenski and his baby arrived from Japan, and Mrs. LaVon McGool and her two children came from Honolulu Hawaii. Mrs. Smolenski, formerly Lucus Maxwell, has been in Japan for three years. En route to the United States they paused in Hawaii for two weeks. Continued on Page Five.
