A Cedar area cancer institute meeting led by Betty Sorenson featured Wallace Toronto and Utah society staff teaching cancer control, with three local doctors presenting topics on causes and treatment. The event included films, educational efforts for April drives, a Pioneer picnic, a public meeting, performances, and a concluding dance by the local orchestra.

New Officers For Gun & Rod Club Installed

Installation of newly elected Parowan Gun & Rod Club officers took place at a meeting held late last week. President Joe Benson, Vice President Elmer Mitchell, Secretary G D Van Ausdal, Treasurer Leonard Orton, and board members Norman Day Tyan Johnson and Vern Holyoak were installed. Day Farms hosted the election after a rabbit hunt. Retiring president is Mr Day. other retiring officers include Vern Mortensen Woodrow Decker Earl Burin Warren Pendleton and S M Clark. Orton and Van Ausdal were reversed in their positions last year.

New Year Visits Highlight Parowan Personal News

Belated notes from Parowan recount New Year visits by former residents Lance and Della Decker Hyatt of Gunnison to Lance’s mother Mrs Lucy Hyatt and siblings the Bentleys. Also in Parowan were Arthur Clark and family from Weed Heights Nevada staying with the Davenport family where Red is recovering from a mine accident with a broken leg. Former Parowan residents J A Paramore stopped by en route to Provo after coastal travels. Laban Burt of Belver and accompanying Merlin Patterson and Jean Harris visited during Pioneer Day, with Harris visiting Bernarr Stubbs family. Mina Orton and Alton Jean Booth from Cedar City attended Pioneer Day and visited William J Gurrs. Walter Stubbs departed for LDS Hospital Salt Lake City for surgery, joined by Golda Lowder and Mary Stubbs after consulting a specialist.

Marching Mothers To Set Pace In Polio Drive

A group of about 60 Parowan women will canvass homes Thursday evening for the 1954 March of Dimes, between 6 30 and 7 30 p m. Residents should display a welcome sign and have change ready as contributions aim for one dollar per person to fund polio treatment research and control.

Parowan Power Plant Bonds Sold for 185000 Revenue Bonds

The Parowan City Council accepted a bid from Bushworth Sullivan & Company and associates of Denver for 185000 in electric power revenue bonds to finance the new hydro electric plant at Red Creek Canyon. The bonds, issued at 4 percent, will mature at 10000 annually from 1956 to 1975 and are secured solely by power system revenues.

Last Rites For Moneta B Dalton Held Friday

Moneta Benson Dalton 68 died Tuesday at county hospital from heart ailment. Funeral services led by Bishop Karl O Mitchell in Parowan LDS Ward Chapel featured music by quartets and duets, interment prayers at the cemetery, and pallbearers including nephews James Whitney and Carl Dalton. Attendees included extended family from Orem American Fork Monroe Delta Fillmore Salt Lake City and other Utah communities.

Statue of D. C. Jackling Placed in Capitol Rotunda

An eight foot bronze statue of Col. D C Jackling founder of Utah Copper Co. and famed mining engineer will be installed in the Utah State Capitol rotunda this summer. Sculptor Dr Avard Fairbanks heads the University of Utah School of Fine Arts in fulfilling the commission from the Sons of Utah Pioneers Jackling Memorial Committee. Kennecott Jaeger Corp directors provided 25000 for the statue. Jackling helped launch one of the world’s largest copper mines and influenced several copper companies.

Stolen Truck Recovered In Beaver After Parowan theft

A 24 ton truck stolen from in front of Parowan High School during the Stake Carni Monday evening was recovered in Beaver Tuesday afternoon. Joy Davenport of Summit reported the disappearance after he and his family returned from the Stake entertainment. The ignition key was in his pocket but doors were left unlocked. Thieves appeared to abandon the truck when gasoline ran out. No thief identity yet. two individuals seen nearby cited as clues. Owner urged locking cars to prevent future thefts and valuables loss.

Local sportsman Norman Day elected regional wildlife leader

Norman Day of Parowan, a noted sportsman and farmer, won the Southern Utah Wild Life Federation presidency at Panguitch and was named second vice president for region five in the State Wild Life Federation meeting in Salt Lake City. Eight-pound son born to Hulet George family

Relatives in Parowan report the birth of an eight-pound boy to Wallace and Evaleen Hulet George in Powell Wyoming on January 11. The newborn, named Scott Hulet, brings the George household to two boys and three girls. Paternal grandparents live in Bountiful Utah, while maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs R Wallace Hales, serving as LDS missionaries in Texas, received the news.
