Final plans for Iron County Board of Education members to travel by train to Kansas City for the National Convention of School Boards next week were approved at Monday's meeting. The board also discussed Cedar City Junior High expansion, Parowan Elementary roof work, Parowan High basketball in Las Vegas, and committees on conservation and state schooling matters.

Funeral services for Samuel Carson Mortensen a retired stockman farmer and Parowan native were held in the First Ward Chapel. He died at home Sunday afternoon of natural causes after a lengthy illness. Born September 11 1867 to Neils Otto and Elizabeth Carson Mortensen he grew up in Parowan and later freighting and canal work in California. Fire at the Harold Mitchell field feed yards was stopped early after a Nightwatchman spotted the fire. Fire Chief S. M. Clark summoned volunteers, whose quick response after one siren blast prevented heavy loss of hay, buildings, and equipment.

A steady rain overnight and early Thursday added moisture to the valley, with 32 inches of moisture reported by weather observer Clayton Rasmussen. Snowy storms and warming temperatures lifted farmers' spirits as showers continued Thursday afternoon and temperatures climbed from subzero to 56 degrees last week.
