Iron County commissioners hold busy session Monday

Iron County officials met Monday to handle routine matters. Commissioners Guyman Bulloch and Levy led discussions on Little Creek Fields road improvement and a flood control dam at Shoal Creek Wash in Escalante Valley. A delegation sought state aid, plans for a Salt Lake City meeting were set, and $500 budgeted for a county law library was redirected.

Iron County School Board to Attend National Convention

Final plans for Iron County Board of Education members to travel by train to Kansas City for the National Convention of School Boards next week were approved at Monday's meeting. The board also discussed Cedar City Junior High expansion, Parowan Elementary roof work, Parowan High basketball in Las Vegas, and committees on conservation and state schooling matters.

Parowan High School Ramette pep club plans a house to house canvas for Heart Funds this week led by Mrs Marvin Graff local chairman. On Sunday the girls will call on homes to collect contributions as Heart Month highlights disease research. Heart disease remains the leading American killer.

Rams Triumph Over Richfield and Milford In Rimrock Duel

Parowan Rams beat Richfield 54 to 45 on the road and down Milford 74 to 42 at home as they push toward the Class B basketball tournament. Rod Bentley scored 20 and Eric Clark 18 as the team pulled away after a fast start.

Parowan Literary Club Hosts Valentine Social

The Parowan Literary Club held its annual Valentine social at Mrs Herman E Bayles home. Co hosts were Mrs Thales Brown Anna and Eva Adams. Last Rites for Samuel C. Mortensen Held

Funeral services for Samuel Carson Mortensen a retired stockman farmer and Parowan native were held in the First Ward Chapel. He died at home Sunday afternoon of natural causes after a lengthy illness. Born September 11 1867 to Neils Otto and Elizabeth Carson Mortensen he grew up in Parowan and later freighting and canal work in California. Parowan Third Ward Relief Society announces a special Sunday program on February 27 to promote 50 percent attendance at Sacrament meetings during February. Parowan High School will present the operetta Gypsy Rover with two casts in upcoming performances. John V Y Benson starred for the BYU Cougars in a home series against Utah. He delivered standout heads up play and scored a late overtime basket securing a two point win. Local fans praise him as hero of both games and a smooth ball player likely to be an All American.

Third Ward Priests Attend BYU U Of U Ball Game

A group from Parowan Third Ward Priests Quorum traveled to Provo to see the BYU versus Utah game last Friday night. Bishop Howard M Adams organized the trip with Saunders M Clark, taking Ronald Morten, Scotty Haycock, Donald Gurr, Carlyle Rollins, Donald Halterman, Tom Dobrusky, Wayne Benson, Eric Clark and Ross Birch as companions to stimulate attendance at church meetings.

King and Queen Crowned At Sweetheart Ball

Mary Etta Stubbs and Lyle Mortensen were crowned queen and king at the FHA Sweetheart Ball in the school gym last Thursday night by attendee vote. Other crown candidates were Donald Stubbs and Annette Thornton Roy Orton and Luella Phillips Reed Thornton and Vanda Mitchell and Jimmie Robinson and Barbara Ann Graff. FHA girls performed a four song set including The Flirtation Waltz and Let Me Call You Sweetheart was sung by LaReta Decker, the FHA president, with the theme of the event.

Midnight blaze at Harold Mitchell field hay yard

Fire at the Harold Mitchell field feed yards was stopped early after a Nightwatchman spotted the fire. Fire Chief S. M. Clark summoned volunteers, whose quick response after one siren blast prevented heavy loss of hay, buildings, and equipment.

Special Project Announced at Stake Conference

A stakewide effort titled Our Spiritual ity by Observance of the Lord's Commandment Thou Shalt Not Bear Fale Witness Against Thy Neighbor was unveiled for Parowan Stake at a Quarterly Conference. D Watson Adams announced ward endorsements and planned emphasis during a sacrament meeting and in Sunday School MIA openings. A stake committee led by Elton Richardson Pauline Hulet Edna Hatch Roy Hatch Adams and Leonard Topham will publicize the project. The gathering stressed harms of spreading false stories and urged avoiding repeating unpleasant but true tales. President W Clair Rowley reported stake statistics at the opening session.

Legion Auxiliary Americanism Assembly Feb 22

Our Americanism contest closes February 14 and an assembly honoring winners will be held in the school auditorium on Washington's Birthday at 3 pm County Attorney Albert M. Marsden will be the featured speaker on Our American Heritage. Music, a solo by Mrs. Mary Topham, and a flag etiquette demonstration are planned with broad public invitation.

Additional Immunization Clinics Schedule Aimed at County

Mrs. Alice H. Barton Iron County Health nurse announces more immunization clinics. A typhoid shot clinic will be at Parowan elementary school Friday February 25 at 9 a.m. A combined typhoid and tick fever clinic will be at Paragonah school Wednesday at 9 30 a.m. PTAs sponsor both events. Students and townspeople are urged to attend for future protection.

Miss Marlene Adams of Parowan and Elved Junior Williams of Cedar City wed at the St George Temple with Harold S. Snow officiating. Parents of the bride are Mr and Mrs T Randall Adams of Parowan. Medical Society Meet In St. George

Dr L W Sorenson of Parowan and Southern Utah Medical Society members met with A E C representatives and Dr John Bowers dean of the University of Utah Medical College in St George on Saturday February 12 to discuss medical issues linked to A F E C activities in Nevada and the anticipated aftermath of an explosion. Nevada and Arizona delegates attended. A steak dinner at Dick's Cafe followed, then Dr M K McGregor presided over a brief business session. Dean Bowers introduced Dr Ely who spoke on management of infant diarrhea and principles of fluid therapy.

Spring Rains Bring Hopes To Farmers

A steady rain overnight and early Thursday added moisture to the valley, with 32 inches of moisture reported by weather observer Clayton Rasmussen. Snowy storms and warming temperatures lifted farmers' spirits as showers continued Thursday afternoon and temperatures climbed from subzero to 56 degrees last week.
