Victor M. Norman, longtime publisher, sells the Parowan Times to Mrs. Georgia B Mitchell. Beginning March 1, Robert F. Mitchell becomes the new publisher. The paper, founded 1915, has passed through several hands, with Norman and Mitchell families remaining tied to the building and staff.
A B Matheson is named chairman of the Red Cross drive in Parowan as the national campaign opens March 1. Plans call for a town canvass by Ward Relief Societies American Legion Auxiliary Gun Red Club Y M V and Tri H clubs with Mayor Scott Mitchell engaging local business houses. Volunteers meet at the Court House at 9 am to begin the drive aimed to finish that day.
Vickie Lynn, a girl born at Iron County Hospital, weighed six pounds 14 ounces. She is the first child of Ale Walter Forster and Lavonna Guyman Forster of Ogden with maternal grandparents Mrs Augusta Adams Dalton of Hollywood and Mr Jess Guymon. The infant’s paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Ted Fife of Summit. The extended family includes great grandparents Samuel Fife of Cedar City, Vern Gillman of Pleasant Grove, Joseph B. Dalley of Parowan, Annie Kimber of Provo, and Ila Forster of Delta. Grandmother Guyman travels from Parowan to assist.
A long expression of thanks to friends and subscribers in the area for eighty years of support to a local business. The note praises the community, plans to return to Parowan for Victor's graduation, and appreciation for Parowan reporter Hulda M Hulet and Paragonah correspondent Hilma Lamoreaux for their efforts. It ends with continuing goodwill toward the Mitchell family.
Parowan High School announces the junior prom will be held April 8, per prom chairman Roy Rummier. Elaborate preparations by the Junior class include Rhythm Makers orchestra for music, a floor show, and special decorations. The theme remains undisclosed.
Mrs. Ernest Orton returned home from a week in St. George with Ed and Lena Johnson. She enjoyed the Calico and Jean square dance jamboree attended by clubs from Utah and the tri state area. John son couple helped introduce square dancing in Dixie five years ago and Mrs Johnson won first prize for a fiesta costume in the style show following luncheon.
Saturday March 5 event offers an evening of entertainment with numbers from out of town performers. Each organization will host a booth and both modern and old time music will be provided for dancing. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
The Gypsy Rover operetta will be staged March 3 and 14 in the school auditorium. Two principal casts and a 50 voice chorus rehearse with LeNoir Asay noting final cast selections and last minute changes. Bold names perform March 3. light face on March 13. both shows start at eight with public invited.
The Parowan Lions Club plans a coordinating council and will hold a special meeting on Wednesday night March 9. All Civic and church groups will be invited to discuss solutions to scheduling conflicts and improve group functioning. Organizations including Parowan City Bishops wards and the Stake Presidency will be notified in advance for recommendations.
Emma R. Smith of Paragonah, lifelong LDS Church member, died Sunday at Cedar City home of her stepdaughter Thelma Melling after a weeklong stroke. Born January 4, 1876, she married James A. Jones in 1899, then Seth W. Smith in 1906. both husbands predeceased her. An 80th birthday open house was held last month.
Howard Knight has been appointed temporary postmaster of Parowan by action from Washington via Utah Congressman Henry Aldins Dixon. Knight succeeds Ivan Decker after a 13 year term and takes over duties as T posts inspect T A Follows oversees transfer. Knight, a local bishop, and wife Margaret Hatch have five children. Leonard Orton remains chief postal clerk with two sub clerks.
Residents faced record chills as the meter showed 4 below zero Saturday night and minus 5 Sunday. By Monday night it reached minus 3 before warming to eight above on Wednesday. Elementary schools dismissed two mornings due to heating problems and Third Ward Primary children missed Tuesday as coal ran out in the furnace hopper.
Miss Linda Knight daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Knight won the five dollar prize from the American Legion Auxiliary for her essay on Americanism. Douglas Rowley son of Mr and Mrs W Clair Rowley won second prize two dollars. The event at Parowan High School on Washingtons Birthday featured Attorney Albert M Marsden, a vocal solo The Flag Without a Stain by Mary Topham, flag etiquette talks by Gladen Mickelson and Garry Miller, 1st Ward Scouts and school band under LeNoir Asay.
The Mutual Improvement Association of Parowan Stake will hold a leadership meeting Monday Feb 28 at 8 PM in the Parowan First Ward Chapel. A home canvass in Parowan Third Ward aims to raise funds for the Stake Welfare Farm and ward welfare budget with a three dollar per family quota. Mia Maids will present Rose Prom Saturday with decorations floor show and Ian Mitchells orchestra. Open to the public with no admission.
The Cedar Valley lamb feeding trial on the Grant Hunter farm, conducted with Iron County Agent and The DuPont Company, tested Phenothiazine as a drench. Two groups of 109 sheep each were compared over 98 days. the treated group showed an average gain of 3.12 pounds per head over the control.
The Parowan First and Second Ward churches completed a Balcom and Vaughan model U-4 pipe organ installation ahead of Sunday services. Jack Ware implemented the setup with funds totaling 4200 dollars, 1750 from church general funds and the rest by the wards. The organ will be used by ward organists, with invitations extended to the community to practice and a potential future recital by a Salt Lake City Tabernacle organist.
Mrs Nellie Dalton of Parowan reports her son Sherman 34 is showing satisfactory improvement at Benedict Hospital Ogden after a highway accident Sunday He foreman Baxter Motor garage Ogden and a companion were returning from Rock Springs Wyoming to repossess two cars The car driven by Dalton hit an icy patch near Evanston went out of control and threw him about 30 feet into the snow He suffered a fractured pelvis and serious internal injuries His brother Elmer summoned from a prospecting expedition and his wife of Hoy Weber County live with him
Iron County Farm Bureau announces its annual banquet on Monday March 7 in the Spa in the Escalante Hotel Ballroom Cedar City. Reservations are $1.00 per plate before March 4 from President J Harold Mitchell Secretary Earl Bonn or Vice President Budd Nelson Cedar City. Incumbent officers will be elected that night. Frank Shelley executive secretary of the State Farm Bureau will be guest speaker.
The Evans Rollins family gathered at 1622 South 5th in Salt Lake for Mrs. Madora Evans Rollins 81st birthday last Saturday. Attendees included Evan Rollins Clarice Morris Bill and Rollins families Parowan, J W Gladys Wood and Moore families, Al Linton Joan Wood Linton and others. They watched the BYU U of U game on TV and shared luncheon and social time. Rollins born February 9 in Parowan married Julian B Rollins in 1897. He died in 1942. The couple lived in Minersville Wyoming Parowan before settling in Parowan 1911. Mrs Rollins has wintered in Salt Lake City with daughters Mrs Wood and Mrs Moore. She recently improved after a serious illness. Descendants include 22 grandchildren.
