Christmas programs planned by West and East wards

The West Ward Sunday school outlines a Christmas program Sunday morning featuring kindergartners through Seniors with reading, story, song, and a main Christmas reading by Mortill from the local seminary. The East Ward plans a Friday 7:30 p.m. Christmas tree program for Primary Children with a Retold Story by Jean Hendrick, a poem The Night Be Christmas, and Santa Claus candy for children. Bentley visited Salt Lake relatives last week.

Memorial Services Sat for Eugene W Lowder

Memorial service announced by Bishop Jess W Guyman for Private Eugene W Lowder son of Mr and Mrs William Lowder of this city to be held Saturday at 3 PM in the East Ward chapel He died on Thanksgiving Day in Tunis where he served with the American Expeditionary Forces The family attended a service in Fillmore earlier this week and sister Mrs Varian Halt erman and her family traveled from Idaho for the service in Idaho the husband works for the Bureau of Public Roads and is expected home for the holidays

Laura Lyman Clark Buried After Impressive Service

Laura Lyman Clark received a Sunday afternoon burial following a 3 p.m. funeral in the East ward chapel. Bishop Jess Guymon presided as relatives from Cedar City Paragonah Summit and here attended. The service featured choir numbers, talks by Ward, Adams, and Armstrong, and two musical offerings. The cemetery grave was dedicated by Wm. Marsden.

Parowan Elementary Plans Christmas Program at High School

Elementary grades from Parowan Elementary will present a Christmas program at 7 20 Wednesday evening December 22 in the high school auditorium. Principal Morris Rowley announces the event and invites all grades, parents, patrons, and townspeople to attend.

The M I A organizations of Parowan wards announce their annual Snow Ball for Christmas night. It will be in the High School gymnasium with special decorations and music by a new mind piece orchestra. Everyone is invited to attend.

County Commissioners Review 1943 Budget and 1944 Requests

Iron County commissioners opened the December session with the tentative 1944 budget of 141 349 32, up from 133 750 in 1943, driven by Welfare Hospital and General fund requests. A public hearing on the budget was scheduled for December 31 at 10 a m with adoption at 2 p m. They also discussed winter road work on Little Creek Canyon, accepted a 1941 42 audit for 400, renewed a railroad crossing lease at Lund and Beryl, and noted the state county officers convention January 20 21 in Salt Lake City. Additional actions included a long term lease with the State Road Commission for land south of Parowan and a 10 tax payment aid to Julia R Stephens. The bulk of the meeting covered tax assessments and county land sales.

Civilians Urged to Curb Holiday Travel

The Office of Defense Transportation appeals to civilians to avoid pleasure trips on trains and intercity buses from December 17 to January 1 and to defer nonessential travel until after January 10. Parowan High School Christmas Assembly Preview

Music students at Parowan High School present their annual Christmas assembly next Thursday December 23 at 2 30 pm in the high school auditorium. The program features the band in new uniforms with marches light classics Christmas selections and a bedtime story plus the girls chorus with two engaging numbers and a reading. Faculty and students invite parents and townspeople to attend seeking worthwhile entertainment.

Funeral Services Held For Paragonah Youth

Funeral services were held in the Paragonah ward chapel Wednesday at 2 o clock for Alvin Top ham who passed Saturday night at the Ivon county hospital from complications of diabetes. He was born in Paragonah, son of John B. and Lillie Topham, lived all his life, and was described as an industrious young man. He was recently examined for the U S Army but turned down due to his condition. Survived by parents, one brother Orla of Panguitch, and one sister Mrs Geneva Guymon of Paragonah. Bishop Leonard Topham presided. choir directed by Amasa Stones. The program included solos and hymns. Grave was dedicated at the City cemetery.

Librarian Seeks Patron Book Recommendations

City Librarian Eulala T. Orton reports library funds for new books before year end and invites patrons to suggest titles. She asks patrons to notify her with books they’d like added and encourages more visitors to use the library in the coming months.

Post Card From Austin Halterman Sent From Prison

A postcard from Austin L. Halterman, held by Japan since Corrigidor fell in May 1942, reached his Los Angeles wife and then his parents. The form card says he is well and progressing. He traveled on the Gripsholm detachment exchange ship, likely sent in late summer. Joy Whitney and Sue Halterman visited Salt Lake City recently.

Jury Commissioners Select List For 1943

Mesrs. Joseph Holynak of Pare owan and C William Macfarraty of Cedar City drew a list of resident taxpayers to serve as jurors for Iron county terms in 1944. The roster names numerous voters from Districts 1 through 5 plus Cedar City, Kanarra, Enoch, Modena, Beryl, Lund and Newcastle. Aged Summit Resident Wyrum Dalley Dies at 78

Funeral services were held for Wyrum Dalley of Summit who died Sunday at Iron County Hospital. He would have turned 79 on December 29. Dalley, born December 29, 1864, was active in the Zions Day Saints church and survived by his wife Mary Neilson, two daughters Ola Aldridge and Marie Crawford, and three sons Ivan Howard and Dewleht.
