Announcement by A C Hateh states that Parowan schools begin Tuesday with 9 am entry for certain grades and 8:40 am bus departures. Classes and registrations will be completed that day with a student body fee of two dollars for all grades and no book rental. Continued on page four.
The Parowan Stake hosts a weekend gathering with welfare and priesthood meetings Saturday at Cedar 3rd Ward Chapel. Welfare at 6 PM followed by Priesthood at 8 PM. Sunday includes multiple sessions and a special musical festival under the Stake music Committee. Regular fall Primary for East and West wards starts after the Fair and Rodeo with the first meeting at 1 PM on Wednesday September 17.
Paragonah Meo and Mrs Ward S Robb celebrate the birth of a daughter at Iron County hospital last week. Eph Bailey, Paragonah Motor manager, remained in hospital with an infection but is recovering. Thelma L Robb has returned to the city to train as a nurse at Holy Cross Hospital.
Statewide entennial events begin at the Centennial Exposition grounds with Water es. August 31 Carruthers Circus September 1 to 20. September 1 Western Penn Golf Championship at Lake Country Club. September 30 All Star High School football at University Stadium Salt Lake City. Founders Day at Wellerville December 3. Southern Utah Livestock Show at Richfield in September 6 Juab County Fair at Nephi.
Major Owen R. Allred, an Army air forces pilot and former Merrill’s Marauders commander, is feared dead after a training plane reportedly plunged into Long Island Sound near midnight Saturday. Mitchell Field crews scour the waters for wreckage while Allred’s wife in New Jersey awaits word. he studied electrical engineering at Rutgers while on detached duty from Maxwell Field. Born July 28, 1919 in Roosevelt Utah, he lived in Parowan, Utah, and graduated high school there in 1939 with honors.
Mr and Mrs David A Matheson near completion of a new cafe on the southwest corner of their main street lot. Located north of Clark Auto Court and across from the High School the cafe aims for high standards and accessibility for all ages. Exterior will be white stucco with large plate glass. interior fully white with an electric kitchen. They plan to open during the upcoming Fair and Rodeo.
Lt Donald Dalton his wife Cuella Sherratt Dalton and son Michael return from 13 months in Europe with the U S Army of Occupation Air Forces. They spent initial months in France then several months in Frankfurt. The family enjoyed a pleasant time in a German home with fruit trees and berry bushes.
State and church officials will attend Iron County's three day fair opening in Parowan on Monday September 8. Gov MAW president McKay Queen Calleen Robinson and other notables head a weekend of events including an amateur rodeo historical play carnival and parade. A 50 member cast will perform Brigham Young and the Pioneers. Premium booklets list livestock crafts and competitions across senior and junior divisions.
Olive Mortensen Ward, 77, died suddenly at her Parowan home Wednesday evening August 27 due to a heart condition. Her daughter Phoebe Taylor was with her. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Parowan West Ward Chapel.
In Iron County on August 22 and 23 the Dalley family gathered at Ward Chapel Summit and Enoch Ward Chapel for a reunion of James and William Dalley descendants. About 300 attendees shared reminiscences, a luncheon, and old time dancing, marking a rare reunion after years apart.
Funeral services for Nelson Bertelson Dalley longtime Summit resident were held Sunday August 24 at 1 pm in the Summit Ward Chapel Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Speakers included Oscar J Hulet from the Parowan Stake Presidency and Rep Walter K Granger son-in-law. Music featured a male quartet from Enoch, Bert Carpenter of Cedar City, and Orion Dalley of Wichita Kansas, son of the deceased, who played violin.
LaMont E. Tueller returns to Utah State Agricultural College training earns a year off and will resume duties September 2. Joel C. Barlow will leave Saturday to assume new responsibilities in Utah County supervising Horticulture and Poultry and assisting 4 H Clubs in Provo. He thanks Iron County residents for support during Tueller’s absence.

Parowan Stake hosted Welfare Committee members and officers from eight stakes in the Virgin River Regional Welfare district plus partners for a meeting and outing at Duck Creek on Tuesday August 26. Over 200 attended from Panguitch Kanab Zion Park St. George Parowan Beaver and from Uvada Moapa Stakes in Nevada. President Bunker of Moapa presided. Marion G Romney visiting with his wife and young son. Parowan Relief Society officers and husbands organized the serving group. Also present were Bishop Jesse Guymon and wife. Parowan provided a male quartet Karl Mitchell Claude Orton Ivan Decker and Clair Rowley with their wives accompanying the singers.
Parowan celebrates the opening of the Bank of Iron County at 9:00 A M on Tuesday September 7 marking the completion of a community drive by the Parowan Chamber of Commerce. The bank is federally insured and opens with capital stock of 30000 plus 10000 surplus and 5000 profits, after a long fundraising effort that began in 1946 and included FDIC review.
About 15 neighbors spent Friday afternoon August 22 with Mrs. Bessie Stubbs for her birthday and shared a luncheon. Ted and Afton Werner of Las Vegas welcomed a daughter Aston Linda on August 25, while Claude Matheson faced major surgery and is recovering. Multiple visits and new arrivals show a busy community with relatives traveling from Salt Lake City to California and back.
