A special meeting on August 6 set the 1948 property tax for county assessed at 36 mills, unchanged from 1947. State tax commission plans uniform levies totaling 52 to 73 mills across Parowan Cedar City Paragonah and others, with assessed values about 13.27 million.
L D S Stake President Jean Hendrick announces a Saturday convention in the West Chapel for all Primary workers from Beaver and Parewan Stakes. General Board members Edna Faux Tessie will meet workers to discuss problems and impart information for the coming year.
The first Ward Conference in Parowan East Ward was conducted by President Karl Mitchell and counselors Arnold Gurr and l Halterman who outlined the past year's work. Officers of ward auxiliaries were sustained, with Sunday School led by Claude Sept. and assistants Boyd Mitchell and Bert Feldstead, Adelle Holyoak secretary, Karla Hulet assistant. the Society headed by Bertha Mitchell with Florence Joseph and Nellie Pritchard as counsel and Josephine Paramore as secretary. YL led by Mary Man with Bertha Stone and Josephine Paramore on the page summary.
State officers and local Republican women gathered in Parowan Court House on a Wednesday afternoon. Regional Director Agatha D. Lunt welcomed attendees before Mrs. Alex J. Jex led a forum on coordinated club efforts and responsibilities to state and national federations. Mrs. George H Lunt spoke next.
Cliff and Emma Mortensen welcomed a healthy Old Sex boy by Caesarean birth after a prior spring operation. Homer and Alta Adams received their 7 lb Tex baby boy in a Bundles from Heaven visit at the County Hospital. Grandparents Stan ley Prothero of Paragonah celebrate the new arrival.
Three hundred twenty six members and leaders attended the Annual 4-H Club Outing at Duck Creek Forest Recreation Camp last week. Rain interrupted the program but did not dampen the group's enthusiasm as craft work, games, flag ceremonies, and campfire programs continued under frequent showers with assistance from Extension staff and local leaders.
Lloyd Lund and Miss Pauguitch wed in the St. George Temple with President Harold Snow officiating. A reception followed August 7 in the school house auditorium. Bride wore heavy white satin with lace bodice and train, veil of white net, orchids for corsage. groom’s family attire noted. ushers Boyd Robinson and Maxine Lund assisted. ceremony featured vocal solos by Luzon Bringhurst, Anna Robinson, and Doris Smith.
Delegates W E Thompson Jack Moyle J E Thompson and Cecil Gibson urged Iron County Commissioners to secure improved roads and increased electrical power for the Escalante Valley. County Agent Lamont Tueller cited estimates that over half a million dollars was spent this year due to power shortages hindering irrigation and crop growth. The group emphasized transport links needed for schooling and shipping produce to rail centers.
Chamber of Commerce members urge immediate cash gifts for the Five-Mile lighting project. Two citizens answered the appeal last week, but the fund remains short. Junior Chamber of Commerce has already supplied half the poles. next week some members plan to travel to California for wire and material. Readers are asked to mail checks and lists of donors include many local residents and business leaders.
Mr. Fred Smith in charge of building and grounds asks for as many men as possible to help prepare the County Fair Monday afternoon at four o clock. Bring hammer and tools. Even those able to spare 1 or 2 hours would be greatly appreciated.
Mr and Mrs Obert Tanner of Salt Lake City visited Mrs Luella Adams in Parowan and toured Southern Utah Parks with other former Parowan residents. The group visited Cedar Breaks via Parowan Canyon. Mrs Berta Burton traveled to Salt Lake to visit Melvin Clark, as Ken Pendleton underwent knee surgery and later faced another operation after serving with paratroopers in the War. Ward Taylor, newly home from army service, visits family in Parowan while employed in an air factory in San Diego. Al least one major operation occurred for Ellis Bentley at County hospital. Pearl Russell and Violet Cumming with Cleo Mortenson presided at a Parowan wedding to Leo K. Smith, officiated by Bishop Leonard Evans, with Norene Johnson and Dorthea Bayles as bridesmaids and Max Barton as best man. The couple will live in Cedar City where Smith works in the family timber business. A large wedding reception followed.
Two Southern Nevada concerns filed articles of incorporation in Nevada per Secretary of State John Koontz. Carson Copper Company, based in Pioche, lists $100,000 capitalization. Iron County readies the 1944 fair with $1500 in prizes plus ribbons across fields from homemaking to 4 H. Ivan Degker chairs committees with co chairs Linford and King guiding homemaking and 4 H. District leaders plan livestock and crafts, with special camps led by Parowan Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
Parowan Stake holds its first Quarterly Conference on Saturday and Sunday August 28 and 29. The Saturday meeting at 6 00 p m is a Stake Priesthood session at West Ward Chapel. Sunday sessions at 10 a m and 2 p m are at East Ward Chapel with all stake members urged to attend.
Boyd Mitchell was chosen to manage the local baseball team following a fast action game between 11 men. He aims to stir interest among young and middle aged men and invites interested players to report at the high school ball field every Tuesday and Friday at 6 15 PM.
