Tourists Seen as Southern Utahs Big Industry

Ray Norton of the Utah Committee on Industrial Development and Planning told the Five County Organization in Kanab last Friday that Southern Utah should tap tourist potential. He urged the counties to take advantage of their possibilities, noting the region as a key playground for Southern California visitors.

Lenora Mortensen burial marks Parowan ties

Graveside services for Lenora Mortensen, 78, a former Parowan resident, were held in Parowan after funeral rites in Delta. Survivors include husband Joseph R. Mortensen and many children, grandchildren, and siblings. The obituary notes her long church work and the family ranch move to Delta in 1932.

Council Plans Oil of Parowan Streets

After several council sessions Parowan approves oiling 32 miles of streets and sealing 34 additional miles. Finances resolved with about 11,000 from Class C funds and a similar extra needed. Union Construction to do the work on deferred payment. Gravel crusher set up on city property to obtain materials.

Parowan First Ward awards honor 26 girls and 2 teachers

Seventeen female youths and two educators received church service awards during the Parowan First Ward Sacrament meeting on Sunday for attendance and participation in church programs. Recipients include Jackie Hammell through Mary Lynn Barton and teachers Leone Rasmussen and June Decker.

Mr and Mrs J W Moore left during the week for an extended trip heading into the Midwest through Yellowstone Park. They will visit the Dakotas Kansas and Nebraska during their journey.

Three killed and ten injured in Buckhorn Flat head on crash

A head on collision about 16 miles north of Paragonal Tuesday night left three dead and ten injured. Kathleen Tippets and Devon Tippets died or were seriously hurt. the Pangoch family of seven and the Nevada-bound couple were involved. Driver Richmond and passengers suffered multiple injuries as the cars crashed into a barren pit and caught fire. Investigating officers and multiple ambulances responded.

Grandson Killed In Montana Airplane Crash

Melvin Reeves grandson of Mr and Mrs Scott Orton died in a Piper Cub crash on a Prior Mountains ridge south of Billings Montana while on a 4.2 hour aerial survey flight from Billings. He was born August 27 1935 in Parowan and grew up in Salt Lake City. Survivors include his mother Irene Reeves Andrus father Frank J Reeves four brothers and a half sister. Funeral attendance from Salt Lake City included Walter F Orton and Scott L Orton family members.

Services Held For John R. Robinson

Funeral services were held in Paragonah for John R. Robinson 78 who died in Meeker Colorado on August 2 after a stroke. Burial was in Cedar City cemetery with services conducted in Paragonah under Bishop Victor Robinson. Surviving are his widow a son Rex Robinson a daughter Mary Tuttle and others. He was born in Paragonah and lived as a farmer and cattle raiser most of his life and served a LDS mission 1909 1911.

Death summons Hendricksons to Logan for father’s funeral

Mrs Jean Hendrickson was called to Logan last Wednesday by the death of her father Mr David Hutchings. Mr Hutchings died at the home of a son Don of a heart attack. Mr Hendrickson joined his wife Saturday. Short services were held in Logan Sunday evening and the body taken to Malta Idaho for funeral services and burial Monday. The Hendricksons returned Tuesday.

Iron County approves 4.5 mill levy with school rise and Parowan hike

Iron County Commissioners set 1957 county levy at 4.50 mills, down from 4.9, while School District levy rises 1.0 mill to 29.50. Parowan adds 2.0 mills for total Parowan levy of 27.00, with outside-city tax at 35.00 per 1,000. TV fund request denied pending legal fixes, county may still fund later.

Local Club Leaders Attend Utah Institute at Salt Lake

Representing the Utah Federation of Women's Clubs at a leadership institute at the University of Utah on July 30 and 31 were Mrs. C F Bentley Mrs. E Ray Lyman Mrs Golda Guyman and Mrs Clair Hulet. They traveled to Salt Lake City with Mrs Ida King. Mr and Mrs Ronald Waters and family vacationed in Yellowstone Park recently. Mr and Mrs Rupert Hulet and family visited relatives in Wyoming and Idaho recently. They also spent some time at Yellowstone Park. Mr and Mrs Robert Royley just returned from a two week vacation trip through the Pacific Northwest of Castro Valley California. They have spent the week visiting with the Ernest Orton family. Most time was spent in the mountains fishing. They left Monday for a few days visit in Southern California. Jim and Kaye Hyatt and two girls Elizabeth Kaye and Debra Lynn from Las Vegas Nev have been visiting here for the past ten days with Mr and Mrs Roy Hyatt and other family members.
