City Council Approves Two Mill Tax Increase Next Year
City council votes a two mill rise for next year raising the levy from 25 mills to 27. Funds to rise include Waterworks four mills Streets and sidewalks five mills General five mills Parks and Public Property 1.25 mills Public safety five mills Recreation .75 mill and Interest and sinking fund four mills. Total expected yield $16,521.30 with $611.90 per mill based on a $611,911 valuation. the increase funds needed for waterworks improvements and lower valuations. The council discusses street oiling, gravel trap site, and oiling all major streets funded by state class C monies, with $11,045.29 saved since 1954. Heber Glenn offers gravel crushing at 60 cents per ton to begin soon.

Parowan Woman Celebrates 85th Birthday
Parowan resident Mrs Anwlia Topham marked her 85th birthday on July 29 at home with family and friends. Born July 29, 1872, she is a BYU graduate, mother of four sons and one daughter, 15 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She remained active in the LDS church and relief society, currently serving as a visiting teacher. Her greatest thrill is letters from four grandsons in the mission field.

Former Resident Buried Here Last Monday
Frank Lazell Norris 69, longtime Parowan resident and father of Mrs. Dee Mickelson, was buried in Parowan City Cemetery last Monday after dying of a heart attack at work. He was born February 23, 1888 in Parowan to William and Harriett Norris, married Ada Thompson in Cedar City in 1912, and lived in Salt Lake City after 1942. He leaves a widow, 11 children, 41 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, plus one brother in Los Angeles. He was a farmer in youth, a horn driller at Desert Mound, and a member of the LDS Church.

Rites Held For Geo A Mitchell At Salt Lake
Funeral services were held in Salt Lake City for George A Mitchell 78 a former Parowan resident who died of a heart ailment July 25. Interment followed in Salt Lake City Cemetery. He was born December 23, 1878 at Parowan to William Cooke and Augusta Pherson Mitchell and married Florence Orton on July 22, 1913. He lived as a farmer and in the lumber business, later teaching in county schools and serving as juvenile judge in Cedar City. Survivors include his widow a son Captain Homer O Mitchell Stead Air Force Base Reno Nevada a daughter Mrs Marjory Van Santen Sacramento California a sister Mrs Nellie Mortensen Logan and a brother Clayton Mitchell Salt Lake City plus three grandchildren.

A deal was consumated last week for the sale of Vic's pool hall and tavern. Jim Mortensen is the new owner, having bought the business from Mrs. Victor Sho walter who has managed it since the death of her husband several months ago. Mr. Mortensen is a native of Colorado, but comes here from St. George where has made his home for several A complete remodeling job on the business is now in progress, including new paint, recovering of pool tables and a renovation of the pool room.

Home From Hospital For Helen Dalton After Fall
Helen Jean Dalton returned home from Iron Co hospital after several days with a brain concussion from a fall from a horse during 4-H Club activities at Duck Creek. While riding with peers she dropped the reins, overbalanced, and struck her head on a rock. Companion Allen Stubbs ferried her horse back to camp where she was taken to the hospital. Her condition is improving.
