Legion Holds Dist Meet At Hurricane
A large gathering from District 7 American Legion and Aux attended the spring convention in Hurricane on Saturday April 2 to report on last year’s activities. Jim Yardley was named district commander to succeed Cain Christensen, with J Leo ard Topham named first vice commander. Auxiliary officers include Alta V Yardley as president, Janell Farrer as first vice president, Ethyl Smith as second vice president, and Alice Jones as historian with other posts to be named later. Entertainment featured tap dance numbers and the Parowan Ladies Harmonica Band, followed by a buffet lunch and dancing. Dept officers noted strong attendance and praised the event.

Monday has been declared Clean Up Day by W Scott Mitchell. Extra trash trucks will collect rubbish since Monday is regular city collection day. Parowan hosts about 1200 musicals on May 7, so town crews clean main street and owners urged to tidy premises.

Bug Control Starts On Dixie Forest
In the Dixie National Forest insect control efforts began this week led by Boyd Leonard. A training school for foremen and strawbosses met in Panguitch on April 28 under Ranger 5. L. Caskelly. Adrian Dalton will supervise 30 to 50 men on the Powell Ranger District. Work centers on East Fork of the Sevier River where infestation spread. three districts won’t need treatment this year. Black Hills beetle control aims to prevent large timber losses as spread accelerates. Leonard notes control helps logging and that about 15 million board feet of green sawtimber will be cut this year with a temporarily increased annual allowable cut to support insect work.

Martha E Barton an 86 year old Paragonah resident died early Wednesday apparently from a heart attack. Brother Frank Williamson found her on his way to the milking barn. she had left to visit her son Don nearby and showed no sign of struggle.

Snow Survey Results From April Reported By SCS and Forest Service
The Sail Conservation Service and Forest Service released results from an April snow survey conducted May 2 by GA Huff and Fog er Olsen. Measurements covered Cedar Breaks, Midway, Webster Flat and Yankee Reservoir with snow depths and water contents recorded. Cedar Breaks showed 40.5 inches of snow and 12.2 inches of water, while Midway reported 42.6 inches of snow and 15.2 inches of water. Webster Flat had 17.5 inches of snow and 7.0 inches of water, Tankee Reservoir 10.8 inches of snow and 3.7 inches of water, and no prior readings exist for several sites. The reservoir water level was about 10 feet below the spillway.

Region Six Music Festival draws Parowan groups for 1200 students
Civic, school and church groups prepare for a large Region Six Music Festival in Parowan scheduled for Saturday May. About 1200 students will be joined by parents and friends for events in the First Ward Church, school, and Ram Cafe. Registration starts 6 am at PHS with badges showing name school and colors. Competitions run at the school gym auditorium and two churches with band sections and choruses performing at intervals. Band Mothers will host at venues. Parowan’s band opens at 9 am with later chorus appearances and a big Main Street parade finale planned.

Parowan Council Adopts Water and Power Rate Changes
Parowan City Council approved new electric and water rates to take effect after ordinances are published. Electric charges shift to blocks with first 25 KW at 5¢, next 25 KW at 4¢, then 14¢, 1c, and 1c after 600 KW, with higher tapping fees rising to 75 dollars. Water rates hike minimum to 1.75 dollars and adjust tiered usage, affecting 25 000 gallons at about 3.05 dollars. The move aims to fund system improvements and bond retirements, with a projected annual increase of about 2 400 dollars in city revenue.
