New officers for District Seven were elected last Saturday night by American Legion and Auxiliary delegates. Elected were Bill Low as Commander and Lyle Leigh of Cedar City as Vice Commander.
Parowan Third Ward MIA groups stage two acts Tuesday evening in the Recreation Hall. Casts include Barbara Ann Graff Karen Boardman Jerrolyn Gurr Lila Halterman Helen Hulet Lin da Sampson Jimmy Robinson Kenneth Simpkins Raymond Lowe and Donald Rowley. The event is produced by the Ward MIA drama department under Mrs. David Orton and Mrs. Clair Hulet with no charge.
Mrs Charles F Bentley was elected president of the Parowan Literary Club succeeding Mrs E Ray Lyman who held the post last year. Mrs Gilbert Barton was named vice president. Mrs Herman E Bayles was secretary with Mrs Thales Brown re elected as assistant secretary.
A 5 year old Salt Lake City boy Mark Lauritzen drowned in the Jordan River near his home last Wednesday. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Norman Lauritzen and the grandson of Mrs Al Dobrusky of Parowan. After hours of search by neighbors, parents and officers, the body was found downstream about ten feet from shore.
Mrs Luella Dalton travels to Salt Lake City with her children to meet her new grandson born to Mr and Mrs Antone Dalton and to take part in selecting a new mother of the year.
Parowan prepares to host the Southern Utah District Federated Women's Clubs spring convention with Mrs. E Ray Lyman as general chairman and Parowan Literary Club as hostess. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. in the First Ward Chapel foyer, with morning and afternoon sessions and a noon luncheon in the same building.
Mrs. J Harold Mitchell hosted the Parowan Literary Club after the high school operetta. Committee reports were given and plans made for the District Convention. Easter themed refreshments were served. The next meeting will be May 1 at the Mitchell home with Mrs. Georgia Mitchell hosting. Mrs. Max Hendrickson will lead a Japan travelogue by CSU faculty member Mrs. Gwen Clark, who recently spent a year in the Orient on a Fulbright scholarship.
Mr and Mrs John Ander son and Donetta Taylor became parents for the second time on April 18. Their new son weighed 6 pounds 2 ounces at birth.
Parowan Chamber of Commerce announces a two day race meet on Memorial Day weekend May 30 and 31 with Clinton Thornton as race committee chairman. The Red Hill Wranglers previously sponsored the event and will step back. Local horsemen and neighboring communities express strong support. Plans for track use are secured by Ped Hill Wranglers and Parowan City. A work party is urged to rake rocks from the track the Saturday before the meet.
Funeral services were held in Parowan First and Second Ward Chapel for Mamie Durham Orton 80 who died Friday of natural causes. She resided at the County Rest Home. Bishop Woodrow Decker directed the services with prayers by Leonard Evans and Karl Mitchell. A double mixed quartet and organ selections accompanied by Geo Durham provided music. Pallbearers included Dee Robinson and others. Burial was in Parowan City Cemetery. Survivors: daughter Ruth Guyman, three brothers, three sisters, and one grandchild Kenneth Guyman. Orton was active in the LDS Church as a visiting teacher for 50 years.
Carla Jo and Rebecca Terry granddaughters of Mr and Mrs W Clair Rowley and Dr and Mrs Carlson Terry, won first in their division at St George Kiwanis Talent Show and captured the grand prize. They also took top honors in Cedar City and earned TV appearances in Salt Lake and two prior telecasts. They will perform at Kiwanis Harvest Days in Midvale in August and seek a talent scout from New York.
The Parowan Garden Club met April 19 to discuss planting shrubs in shade. The next meeting is May 5 at the Courthouse with the topic Landscaping.
City planning group proposed Zone 1 extending one block either side of Main Street to town limits with no land use decisions yet. Council granted permission for a race meet site and a tourist sign at Main and Center, awaiting state clearance. Tree removal on Main Street, dump fencing, burning of papers near the dump, and bids for cemetery hoses were discussed with actions pending.
George Mickleson remains at Iron County Hospital awaiting surgery. Medical staff plan the procedure and report stable condition as preparations proceed in the facility.
Foreign consuls from several countries will join Parowan High students at the University of Utah for the third annual high school Model UN Assembly on April 26 and 27. Participants include Akira Nishiyama and Mme Adrienne Buck with Salt Lake City ties, plus Mexican, Italian, and Dutch consuls. Parowan students Barbara Jane Bayles Gretta Mortensen LeRoy Orton Steven Orton and Lyle Topham, guided by Marvin Graff, will represent Haiti.
The Southern Utah Wildlife Federation will hold a meeting Friday at 7 00 p m in the El Esteac ulante Hotel in Cedar City chaired by president C A Thomas. Items of importance to southern Utah are on the agenda.
