Iron County Board of Commissioners prepare for April Parowan meeting to discuss salary adjustments for state county and city officials following Utah legislature changes. Members study available data and compare with other departments noting favorable preliminary findings.
Miss Shirley Rollinson of Paragonah was elected president of the Junior Gleaner Girls of the Parowan Stake Improve Meni Association at a fireside in Parowan First Second Ward. The event featured ward skits games a program and refreshments arranged by Mrs Golda Guyman. She will begin duties in June succeeding Miss Claudia Matheson. An election for a Stake President of the Junior M Men is planned for April 19 in Summit.
About 240 Parowan youngsters joined an Easter egg hunt on Saturday arranged by the Triad Ladies Club with help from local merchants and the Parent Teachers Association. Prizes including candy, toys, gift certificates, and wallets were awarded. Ralph Orton led arrangements. The event featured egg hides around the City square and a reading by Mrs. Theis Miller.
Corporal Jack Stevens son of Mr and Mrs Albert Stevens of Parowan expected home soon from Korea after a year of service with the 28th Infantry Regiment third battalion communications unit. He left Korea March 26 and was to embark from Japan April 1 after entering service September 10 1951 and sailing to the Orient in May 1952. He is anticipated to be discharged shortly after arriving in the United States.
Several women complete a 30 hour Home Nursing course under American Red Cross direction led by Anne Martin. Recipients include Bertoch, Decker, Dean-Orton, Orion, Skidmore, Adams Skidmore, and others, with plans to expand to laymen and fourteen hour courses continuing.
Sudden temperature drop on Wednesday ruined apricots and plums. wind chills reached 23 degrees. Weather observer Clayton Witgen noted disheartening shift from mild early spring to sharp frosts, ending a warm spell that had helped fruit nearby. Precipitation in March totaled about 0.64 inches of moisture.
The meeting will discuss the Brindany Youngs case and settle the fate of the om. the event is set for Sunday night in the Cedar City area. Air Goaive of Laren will provide remarks, with SP officers in attendance to hear updates and guidance.
Local notes recount Willim Thornton of Sarowan in a Las Vegas hospital after a month illness from flu complications and pneumonia while visiting Parowan in February. Several residents visit relatives in Ogden Panguitch Salt Lake City and California for family, work, and medical reasons.
A public cancer prevention and fundraising drive will start in Parowan this month led by chairwoman Mrs. L W Sorenson with help from Mrs. Edna Hateh Anni Adims Cecil Adams and a corps of volunteers A film shown at the school projection room last week began public education on early diagnosis and dangers of cancer The item cites about 200000 US deaths expected this year with 548 daily 23 hourly and 1 every three minutes stressing prompt medical consultation and warning against quacks and unproven home remedies. Saddle club invites all interested to attend Friday April 17 at 8 pm in the Court House for the ninth official membership meeting. By laws, board of directors, and club name selection will be decided with a $10 prize to the author of the chosen name.
Mr and Mrs W Bill Elijoy and children from Roy Utah, with guests the Kent Mitchells and Mrs Hilda Tullis families, toured to Las Vegas and Boulder City Nevada over Easter weekend. American Forks Jay and Mice Haltermay family visited Parowan. Mrs Mahle Adams returned home from Provo WH after visiting daughter Zethi Whithey. Parowan and Addressey residents welcomed Conference visitors including many notables and church officials in Sol Lake City. Primary Association members attended a convention before General Conference sessions.
Cedar City area residents invited as Poraway High School Parent Teacher Association plans upcoming session. Mrs Claude Adams, president, announces agenda includes absenteeism at the high school and a 15 minute question period. Nominating committee reports officers to be elected by secret ballot for the coming year.
A reader notes sighting of Harvey at the local high school and records an event dated April 25 at a location labeled APOM, suggesting a community or school affair with two named points of reference.
Garth B Whitney Jr of Psarowan is proposed as President of the Delta Phi Chorus at Brigham Young University. The LDS group, famed across the West for its performances, recently presented a program in Salt Lake City for church leaders and wives and will tour under his leadership through Spring Quarter 1954.
Mr and Mrs Lucius Benson announce the birth of two grandsons on Sunday and other families record new arrivals. Signs indicate Jim Benson studies at USAC while Signa Fisher Benson resides with relatives. Alden and Eleanor Stones Hyatt welcomed their firstborn daughter April 8 weighing about six pounds at Lyon County Hospital. Grandparents include Mrs Lacy Kvalt Parowan Henry Holt George and Joseph Jones. Great grandchild Links to Mrs Lucy Hyatt noted.
Mr and Mrs Glen Clark of love Angeles visited with the Tom Davenports in Parowan last week and again early this week while en route to and from Conference in Salt Lake.
The Parowan community and local officials plan an improved insured postal service with a new 4 p.m. start time and extended hours, including evening games and lighted matches. The Postal Service outlines a morning delivery by 8:10 a.m. and hopes to extend outbound service to 4:15 p.m. The effort involves Parowan Chamber of Commerce Mayor Lena and other officials, plus staff like Tom Dobrovky and John V. Henson.
Radio reports from Salt Lake City announce the death of John A. Parkimore 23 of Provo, a Parancore student and car owner, who perished with two University of Utah students in a fiery crash after hitting a dead end street. He was the son of Mr and Mrs J A Paramore Jr of Provo, recently moved to California after living in Parowan area. The family had returned from Germany where he served with the United States Army.
The I.Y.1 choir of about 80 trained voices directed by Prof Newall Weight will give a free concert at the Third Ward LDS Chapel in Parowa Saturday afternoon. Miss Joan Bayles appears with the group for the second year. the choir is renowned nationwide and travels to St George afterward.
The BYU Concert Band directed by Prof Norma Hunt will present a concert Tuesday at 2 p.m in the school auditorium. The performance, free to the public, features the band touring the state and includes Porowan and Hinerarr high schools. Principal Daly encouraged attendance.
