Hamblin Denied Change of Venue in Manslaughter Case

Leale Zane Hamblin of Cedar City faces voluntary manslaughter charges after a man died from a head injury in Cedar City on February 7, 1943. Hamblin sought a change of venue due to alleged pretrial publicity on KSUB and other media. Judge Will L. Hoyt denied the petition for insufficient evidence. Trial was set for 9:00 a.m. May 6 in Parowan. Wayne LeBaron of Hurricane, charged with third degree burglary, received more time to prepare his defense. the court date was also set for May. Local Group Conducts Cancer Fund Drive in Parowan

A house to house cancer fund drive in Parowan concludes this week. Chairman Mrs L W Sorenson led volunteers who visited every home starting April 1. Uncontacted residents are asked to mail contributions to The American Cancer Society care of Mrs Betty Sorenson Box 205 Parowan. Assistants include Mrs Edma Heich Mrs Cecill Adams Atina Adams and Mrs Retta Decier.

Parowan Second Ward Primary Sets Conference

The Parowan Second Ward Primary association announces its annual conference program to be held Sunday at 7 40 p m in the Ward Chapel. Mrs Arvilla Morensen president says the program titled The Primary Children's Hospital will feature participating children who should assemble by 7 15 p m. The public is invited.

Parowan Officials Tender Resignations

Eugene M. Orton Parowan City Treasurer and Harrell Dalton City Marshal resign at a Monday council meeting. Orton leaves to take employment at the mines while Dalton to focus on farming and livestock operations. A Wednesday meeting was set to consider appointments to fill the vacancies.

Saddle Club Meeting Set For Friday Night

Horse lovers in the area agreed to attend the court house Friday night to help finish the Porowan Saddle Club and select a winning club name. The gathering will also discuss other business matters and is scheduled for Friday April 17 at 8 o'clock.

Parowan Obituary and Labor of Late Parowan Resident

Funeral services for Uriah Thornton, longtime Parowan resident and former LDS Church member, will be held Saturday in Parowan with burial in the local cemetery. Born April 10, 1865, to Stephen and Nancy Curtis Thornton, he married Adelinda Orton in 1887 and lived much of his life in Parowan, operating a hotel, a saw mill, and a shingle mill. He is survived by ten of fourteen children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, with services arranged under the Bishopric. The notice also lists recent deaths of nearby university students and local figures, reflecting a regional obituary notice page.

Harvey Benefit Play Set For Parowan April 25

Parowan residents sponsor a benefit performance of Harvey at P H S Auditorium on Saturday April 25. University of Utah players directed by Prof Albert O Mitchell bring the light hearted drama about Elwood P Dowd and his invisible friend Harvey. Proceeds go to the Parowan Stake house fund. Alan Matheson and other local figures participate. The story blends mad comedy with whimsy as Elwood and his sister Vera clash over Harvey. Continued on page three.

P.ILS Students To Attend BAC Activities This Weekend

PuroWan High School students will participate in BAC regional activities in Region Six and Eastern Nevada at Voentionn. Friday and Saturday showcase contests include woodworking, welding, livestock judging, home economics, and muffin and arts contests. Approximately 60 home economics girls from various grades will attend exhibits, with younger classes performing a puppet play and a student exhibit from BAC Friday.

Legion Auxiliaries Contest for Church Attendance Prize

Legion Auxiliaries unit competes with another district for the largest percentage of members attending church. Mrs Anha Kaplin of Cedar City offers the prize to boost the Back to Church Movement. County Officials School Slated For April 21

Iron County officials will hold a school meeting on Tuesday April 21 at the Iron County Court House. A. Grant, executive secretary of the Utah Association of County Officials, announces the event. Delegation of nine people will attend and a luncheon at Taylor's Cafe will precede the meeting. The school is part of a state series sponsored by the Association of County Officials for all elected and county officials.

Missionary to Speak at Stake Fireside

Dale Tingey, Cedar City seminary instructor and former missionary in Czecho Slovakia, will discuss his experiences at the Parowan Stake Gleaner Fireside on Sunday evening. Salary Adjustments Made For Iron County Officers

Iron County officials voted for a new salary plan raising full time officers to 1800 a year and officials in government roles to closer to 4500 under recent legislation. The move follows prior underpayment compared with other counties and private sector roles. The board adjusted salaries mid term, citing long standing undercompensation and need for parity.

Mr and Mrs Lyon Stewart were honored at a reception in Paroway after their April Las Vegas wedding. The bride Joan Adams is daughter of Mrs Augusta Adams of Paroway. Groom’s parents are Mr and Mrs Oria Stewart of Spanish Park. The double-ting ceremony occurred at an LDS Bishop's home in Las Vegas with relatives including Larry Adams attending. The couple hosted a reception at Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas and wore coordinated outfits.

BYU A Cappella Choir Features Local Pianist

BYU A Cappella Choir presented local pianist Miss Louise Maradey daughter of Mr and Mrs Will Maradten of Parowan as piano soloist during Saturday afternoon concert. Marsden sisters and Joan Bayles joined the group under Prof Newall B Weight. The choir, touring through St George and several Arizona cities, was aided by Mrs Weight and coordinated by Weight, a former Parowan High School instructor.
