Bear Lake Valley Settlers Opened a Frontier History

The Bear Lake Valley's early exploration begins with Jim Bridger in 1830 and Captain Bonneville in 1833. Trapper William Smith, known as Peg Leg Smith, contributed to its settlement before Brigham Young leadership directed colonization. Paris emerged as the first settlement site with Richland County later forming Bear Lake County and Paris its seat.

Iota Chapter Opens 1963 64 Year in Soda Springs

Delta Kappa Gamma Iota Chapter began its 1963 64 year with a meeting at the Cedar View Supper Club in Soda Springs on Sept 14. Nineteen members attended as President Gertrude Freeman presided. Hostesses were Marguerite Ainscough Mary Nielsen and Freeman. The opening collect was by Ruby Sorenson and the closing by Gwen Stalker. A presentation Women in Books was given by Stalker. Comendations honored Mildred Clayton for her degree from Utah State University LeRnen Lowe for becoming principal of Franklin School Melinda Sparks for an overseas post in New Zealand schools.

Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle a Monument to Early Pioneers

The Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle on Main Street Paris built by Bear Lake Valley pioneers at cost of fifty thousand dollars. It began in 1884 and finished 1888 with William Budge as president and George Q. Cannon dedicating the edifice on September 15, 1889.

Mr and Mrs Lothair B Rich of Meridian formerly St Charles announce the marriage of their daughter Karen to Ronald M Christensen son of Mr and Mrs Jess Christensen of Talmage Utah. The marriage was performed Saturday September 21. Ronald and Karen are employed in Salt Lake City and will reside at 210 Truman Ave.

Paris Bear Lake Marker Marks Early Settlement

In observance of a Centennial the Idaho Historical Society prepared a highway marker text about Paris and surrounding Bear Lake Valley towns. The marker notes 1863 arrival of Mormon colonizers led by Co. C Mich and 700 more settlers the next spring, Bear Lake county creation in 1875 and Paris as county seat.

Fielding High School Prepares Homecoming Festivities

Fielding High School plans a Friday Homecoming program starting with a morning assembly and a 12 30 parade from floats and the Drill Team to Emerson Elementary Band. At 1 30 the Sparians vs Bancroft on the local field, with halftime drill, royalty selections, and a 9 00 dance at the Paris Pavilion.

Star Valleys Oldest Resident William Kennington Dies

William Henry Kennington 94 oldest Star Valley resident died in Afton at his son's home after months of illness. Born July 80 1869 in Teele Utah he moved with family to Liberty then Star Valley. He married Isabelle Blanchard in 1890 and served in church roles, mayor of Afton for two terms, and conducted two missions. He is survived by children 23 grandchildren 74 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Funeral held Wednesday Sept 11.

ISU Sees Enrollment To Reach 3500 Students

Idaho State University expects enrollment to reach 3500 as late registration runs through September 29. Alton B Jones said 3335 students enrolled in a two day period and registration continues to push totals higher.

Army Basic Training Moved to Fort Polk Louisiana

The Army basic training unit for local recruits moved from Fort Ord California to Fort Polk Louisiana. Sgt Charles Bliss of the Recruiting Service reports Ralph Athay of Paris enlisted for three years. Sgt Bliss will visit Paris on October 17.

Camp Elizabeth Passey Holds First Fall Meeting

Camp Elizabeth Passey Daughters of Utah Pioneers held its first fall meeting on Sept. 19 at Mrs. Theresa Richs home. Iris Collings led They Came in 63. Granddaughters Elizabeth Astel and Mary Situcki presented John Isac Price. Mona Shepherd spoke on Pioneer Hand Cart. Edna Law gave a reading. Eighteen members attended a social hour with refreshments. Hostesses were Theresa Rich Rhea Stucki Mary Stucki Iris Collings and Lena Fox.
