The U S post office announces rate increases effective Sept 1 for letters and cards to Canada Newfoundland Great Britain Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State plus higher air mail rates to Canada and Newfoundland including Labrador The Canada Newfoundland rate is 2 cents per ounce or fraction on letters and 1 cent per post card single 2 cents double while air mail to Canada and Newfoundland is 6 cents per ounce plus 10 cents for each additional ounce The Great Britain Ireland and Irish Free State rates are 5 cents for letters per first ounce 3 cents for each additional ounce and 3 cents per post card single 8 cents for post cards double.
