Funeral Rites Held for Mrs Earley of Laketown
Mrs Barbara Earley 90, pioneer of Rich County, died at Round Valley October 5. Funeral services in Laketown featured biographical sketches, hymns, and speakers from the community. Gem State property taxes hit new high says Idaho group
The Associated Taxpayers of Idaho reports a record total property tax of more than 50 million dollars for the year, driven by higher levies and a 16.5 million increase in assessed valuations. Farmers Home Administration offers loans to finance construction and repair of farm houses and related buildings. Local supervisor G Maughan reports last year’s program borrowed 21.3 million and current year activity totals 73,070 with six new homes and other projects in progress. Loans require up to 30 years at 4 percent, cannot buy land, and require the borrower to be a U.S. citizen operating a substantial farm.

Cattlemen Resist Forest Grazing Cuts in Cache Valley
Area cattlemen packed the Logan county courthouse on October 21 to oppose Forest Service grazing permit cuts of 10 to 60 percent. About 15 000 head of cattle graze the Cache National Forest, with the Logan Canyon group facing an 85 percent reduction in two years. They warn cuts threaten northern Utah and southern Idaho’s cattle industry and urge continued multiple use of forest resources while maintaining coordinated range management. A committee led by Ray Theurer of Providence will study the issue and meet Forest Service leaders, with other members named.
