D. H. Transtrum longtime U S Foreign Service first secretary and counselor died October 25 after brain surgery in a Washington hospital. Born February 6 1911 in St Charles he served in World War II and married Louise Mielliner in 1936. Funeral held October 26 at LDS chapel with Arlington National Cemetery burial.
Mr and Mrs George W Brewer celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary at their daughter's home in St Charles on November 1. Guests included Stanley and Marion Brewer Audrey Ellsworth and husband Elmo Hanks and husband Elden and Doyle Mattson. A wedding cake and roast turkey with all the trimmings were served.
R. E. Gustavel of Boise is named state chairman to coordinate March of Dimes activities across Idaho for the January drive. He notes that many Idaho polio survivors depend on the campaign for a fighting chance at productive lives as new cases decline and post acute patients remain a problem. Funds support research expansion, professional education, and vaccine promotion.
Festive opening last Saturday at B and K Jewelry in Montpelier drew a large crowd. Prizes awarded included a watch to Mrs. Bob Solum of Georgetown, a pen and pencil set to Mrs. Alton Kearl of Fish Haven, a salt and pepper set to Mrs. Ray Homer of Montpelier, a tie pin and cuff link set to Betty Louise Kunz of Montpelier, and a necklace and earring set to Mia Bernard Allhands of Montpelier.
The Paris Local Board Selective Service office will operate Mondays through Fridays with hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The notice lists the new schedule for public access and processing.
Charles R. Crawford a Paris native and longtime council member resigns from the council and mayor’s office effective immediately. Cyril S. Budge becomes acting mayor pending a successor election as Crawford moves family to Montpelier to manage the Motor Hotel.

The Bear Lake County Farm Bureau will hold its annual banquet at Montpelier High School with Dr Daryl Chase of Utah State University as guest speaker on Friday November 8 at p.m. Members are reminded limited dinner tickets are available and to contact the local chairman to ensure a ticket. All valley citizens are invited to attend.
General deer and elk season closed nationwide with October 31 marking the end in many zones. A few districts stay open into November, leaving about 80 disappointed hunters a last chance. Some areas reopen late for migratory herds, requiring hunters to review current regulations.

A golden wedding anniversary reception for Landon and Garrie Pugmire was held November 1 in Ward amusement hall St Charles. About 200 guests attended a program of duets solos tributes readings and musical numbers including performances by Laurel Norma and Merrill Pugmire and others in the Pugmire family.
A birthday dinner for 20 descendants celebrated Mary Ann Payne's 73rd birthday at her Bloomington home on Sunday November 3. Attendees included Bishop and Mrs Raymond Payne of Brig h am City, Mr and Mrs Truman Pryre of Montpelier, Mr and Mrs Orson Spencer of Bloomington, Mrs Emma Payne Krogue, and others in the Payne family.
Army Pvt Farrell J Arnell, son of Mr and Mrs Eugene R Arnell of St Charles, recently arrived in France and is assigned as a driver in the 22nd Transportation Car Company. Arnell entered the Army in May, trained at Fort Lewis, and was last stationed at Fort Ord. He attended Fielding High School in Paris and was formerly employed in Springville Utah.

On November 2 the Bloomington Ward honored its retiring bishopric at a social in the Ward recreation hall. A. Victor Reese chaired the event, J. Bryan Haddock was master of ceremonies, and the Mutual presented its Merry-go-Round program. Bertha Thornock ETS read, Charles Hulme offered a humorous Bloomington history, and gifts with family tributes were given to Bishop T. Ja Nelson, his counselors Otis Bateman on Hulm and Clerk Reed Hk, with corsages for wives.
The St Charles P T A met in the Wilson school building on Monday with Dr Robert Burgoyne as guest speaker. He spoke on childhood diseases and prevention, focusing on Asian flu, as Colleen and Doreen Hirschi played two piano duets.
Camp Elizabeth Passey led the Daughters of Utah Pioneers meeting at Lillias Guin’s home on Thursday October 1. Seventeen members and visitors heard Lucille L. Rogers present a lesson on James Collings Sr. Iris Collings spoke on the family history, Joyce Beck played a piano solo, and refreshments were served by Lillias Grimmett Nora Hymas and Nina Eborn.
Sheriff O E Monson announces the Paris Bear Lake county driver license division will stay open until noon Saturdays to help workers reach the office outside weekday hours.
Idaho will issue tax notes to cover a general fund deficit. Ruth G. Moon says $5 million issued now, with an estimated $17 million total. The move saves about $107,000 in interest but lowers balances in 93 banks outside Boise while operations use Boise banks.
Herman Welker former Idaho senator and Boise lawyer was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors after dying at 60 from brain illness. Frederick Harris chaplain of the Senate eulogized him as a sentinel on the ramparts of freedom amid services in Ft Myers chapel. He served in World War II and is survived by his wife and daughter. Governor Smylie and Idaho delegation praised him as a distinguished public official.
Idaho Federation of Young Republicans calls a state conference in McCall at Shore Lodge on November 9 led by William Roden to organize for the 1958 campaign. John Ashbrook will headline with other leaders invited. includes campaign committee formation and the first voter program for 18 to 36. Registration begins November 8. state executive meeting follows November 10.
