Pfc. Charles W. Piggott was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds in action in Vietnam. He is hospitalized at Camp Drake in Japan and will return to the U.S. soon. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Piggott of Bloomington.
The opening of the state migratory waterfowl season and elk hunt saw slim results for Bear Lake County hunters. Dry conditions in mountains and bottomlands reduced activity. elk movement noisy in the mountains and geese dispersed by lack of water. After this week’s storm conditions may improve for deer and duck hunting as October days proceed. Sunrise and sunset times for October are provided with daylight saving adjustments.
Emma Jane Lyon Hymas of Liberty died at 93 from natural causes at a daughter's home in Paris. Born December 26, 1874, she married Joseph M. Hymas in 1894. he died in 1932. Survived by four daughters, two sons, many grandchildren. Funeral 1:00 pm Friday at Liberty LDS Ward Chapel, burial in Liberty Cemetery.
Emma Johanna Strand Anderson, 78, of Lehi Utah, died Tuesday in Salt Lake City. Born January 10 1890 in Myra Halsingland Sweden to Gustaf Hedberg and Kristina Strand, she married Edwin Hyrum Anderson October 8 1915 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Active in the LDS Church she was a Relief Society visiting teacher and taught in Sunday school. funeral services are Friday at noon with burial in Lake Hills Cemetery.
Lions International District Governor Vern Bloxham of Downey visited the Paris Lions Club on Monday evening. He outlined Lions International projects and goals and praised southeastern Idaho clubs. He installed Spencer Stucki and Jim Mattson as new Paris Lions members.
Charlotte B. Cook Dickson 74 of Roy Utah died a natural death October 15 at a daughter’s home in Provo. Born July 28 1894 in Garden City she was married to Orlando Sy Jene in the LDS Temple in 1914. Survived by husband two sons three daughters 26 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren and a sister. Funeral 1:00 p.m. Lindquist and Sons Colonial Chapel Ogden with interment in Memorial Gardens Wasatch.
At the Paris Courthouse a Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge briefing outlined tentative aims. Officials from the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife and allied agencies described dikes, islands, nesting areas, grain fields and feeding zones to stabilize water levels and reduce depredation by waterfowl.
The Bear Lake Soil and Water Conservation District opposes the IFG Elk Valley dam project, arguing it misuses land, harms livestock producers, fails multi use, and wastes state funds. Officials note public areas, trails, and an administration building would be planned, with funding debates ongoing.
