Idaho starts the 1956 duck and goose season with opening day at half an hour before sunset. Daily bag limits allow nine ducks or three widgeons or pintails combined, and two Canada geese per day. A 16 year old hunter must carry a migratory bird stamp and license. under 12 cannot carry a gun in fields or cars. December hours largely moot due to frozen waters.
Ezra J. Poulsen recalls Sauk Center and Paris as roads improve, streets gain signs, and new brick businesses rise with rail and mine openings. He notes nostalgia for old Main Street days, while urging cautious growth to preserve small town character.
Richard Ward of Fielding Chapter FFA earned a high score of 261 out of 300 at the Dairy Judging contest in the Eastern Idaho State Fair in Blackfoot. He received a wrist watch Monday from Warren Wright of First Security Bank, Montpellier. The chapter also competed at the District Judging contest in Logan, placing fourth in Dairy Judging.
More than half of Fielding High School’s 1956 graduates pursue higher education. Twenty two of forty one grads enrolled in Utah State Agricultural College, University of Utah, BYU, Colorado A and M, University of Idaho, Ricks College, Snow College, or LDS Business College. Transcripts sent for seven additional students. The trend shows rising college attendance: 36% in 1953, 32% in 1954, 36% in 1955, and 54% in 1956.
John W. Reynolds Burley farmer and Democratic U S Congressman nominee will spend a day in Bear Lake County on Thursday Oct 18 meeting farmers and discussing campaign issues. A 8 p m gathering will close the day at the Paris court house inviting county voters. Debra Doman dies after being struck by a truck in Deer Lodge Montana. She is the five year old daughter of Mrs Rufus Doman formerly Verlene Hansen Wyler daughter of Harley Hansen of Paris. Walter and Mrs Lewis return from Utah trip where sixteen grandchildren and great grandchildren gathered Sept 25 at Harold R Baker home for a musical program. Colleen Baker showed slides and Alaska trip tape.
The Fielding Spartans lost 40 to 0 as Westside showed superior speed. Upcoming schedules include a trip to Grace for the conference game and a Homecoming clash with Montpelier on Oct. 19.
William W W Holmes of Montpelier and Owen L Kunz of Bern left Paris for Boise to take Armed Forces Physical examinations on Wednesday October 10.
Fern Johnson and Anton Preston Hunter were married October 1 in a double ring ceremony at the Logan LDS Temple officiated by Pres George Raymond. The event drew hundreds of relatives and friends, with a reception and open house to follow, and the couple planned a weeklong honeymoon to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite Park before settling in Cedar City.
The Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle in Logan Utah is being beautified with mortar replacement on rock construction new concrete sidewalks replacing washed away sections and removed fencing to allow redesign. Charles Rogers paints exterior as part of a city wide beautification program run by High Priests Quorum committees from two wards with city cooperation. Local citizens are urged to contribute to giving several buildings and vacant lots a new look.
Jesse Law 68 died Sunday evening of a heart attack at his Meridian Idaho home. Born Paris November 8 1887 he lived in Paris Soda Springs and Meridian. Survived by his widow six sons and three daughters. Funeral Thursday in Meridian with burial Friday at Paris Cemetery.
Enrollment totals 420 with principals Roghaar and Grandy reporting grade breakdowns from last through senior year. Notable counts include eighth grade 33 and seventh grade 81, plus 53 freshmen and 47 sophomores.
The Paris Lions Club plans to install waste paper containers along Main Street to keep the area clean. Members urge all ages to treat the receptacles with respect and seek donations of ten cents to fund the project, offering a doll dressed in dollar bills as a prize to one donor.
The Bear Lake County Farm Bureau Board met October 8 at Montpelier City Hall to conduct monthly business. It accepted the resignation of Earl Tippetts as insurance agent and hired Steve Frederickson as general agent for all Farm Bureau Insurance services in Bear Lake county, with his wife moving from Blackfoot. The group set the annual meeting for November 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Montpelier City Hall, and announced the banquet for November 9 with a planned guest speaker.
Mr and Mrs John J Tueller of Ogden celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home 624 35th Street Ogden Utah on Sunday October 14 inviting friends and relatives between 2 and 6 pm No gifts requested The couple married October 10 1906 in the Salt Lake Temple and have nine surviving children and 28 grandchildren.
Ray Horner of Soda Springs faced a dangerous elk opening day when a bull moose charged from the brush near Timothy Creek. He fled atop his horse, climbed a tree after the animal paused directions, freed his foot from a stirrup, and fired in self defense as the moose approached before it finally walked away. The horse trembled but remained calm throughout. The Caribou County Sun reports the incident.
Arthur D. Orr, 74, died Wednesday morning at a Salt Lake City hospital after a prolonged illness. Born July 13, 1882, in San Pete County Utah, he married Ethel Reding in 1918 in McCleod Alberta. Survived by his widow, son Lauchie A. Orr of Salt Lake City, and daughters Mrs. Wilford Smith and Mrs. Vernon Ward, among others. Funeral services were held in Salt Lake City.
U. S. Representative Hamer Budge plans a Bear Lake County visit Thursday October 11. He will meet at the home of Republican precinct committeemen and then speak at Montpelier High School assembly at 11:30 a.m. Open house at O H Grimmett home in Paris 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. He closes with a Fielding High School PTA talk on Federal Aid to Education at 8:00 p.m.
Bear Lake county joins cities nationwide in Ike Day celebration on Saturday Oct 18 the eve of the president's birthday. A Montpelier party at City Hall and private gatherings will culminate in a 8 30 p m national broadcast featuring many stars urging citizens to register and vote this November.
Mrs. Lloyd Hansen spent a day in Georgetown last week with her niece Mrs. Faye Jensen and their new baby daughter.
Mrs. Blanche Sleight, 47, of Paris Idaho, died Monday evening October 8 after a long illness. Born April 26, 1909 in Bloomington Idaho, she married Carl Sleight in 1928 in Paris. Survived by husband two sons George and Clyde, daughter Tlaline, parents W H Bateman, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral Saturday at 1 pm in Paris First Ward Chapel.
The MIA presents a full evening of song dance comedy drama and costume titled Merry Go Round at the Paris 2nd Ward meeting house Tuesday Oct 16 at 8 o clock. Gold stars Clyde Taylor Colleen Bird in a pioneer play and In the Milk Pail features Glade Booth Marilyn Lewis with Bear Lake.
Bruce Stucki spent the weekend in Paris with relatives and friends. Dr. Stucki was en route from Washington to Kentucky, where he will intern as a Doctor of Veterinary.
