Dairy Growth Driven by Size and Production in Holsteins
USDA data show average milk per cow rising from 1486 pounds in 1850 to 2004 pounds in 1880 with strong gains in Holstein herds. Records indicate Holsteins exceeding 74 pounds daily for a year and 250 cows surpassing this production. Larger size yields higher net income, with a 600-pound weight increase adding about 38 dollars over feed costs.

Feed Ration for Holstein Cows by Milk Output
The guide shows feed amounts to maintain Holstein cows by milk production. A 1400 lb cow at 46 lb milk needs 42 lb corn silage, 8.5 to 9.0 zda hay, and 12 to 18 lb grain. another at 22 lb milk uses 42 lb silage, 8.5 to 9.0 lb hay, and 4 to 6 lb grain. After freshening grain rises to 12–18 lb for about four months then declines. Overfeeding prompts grain reductions when switching to higher quality feeds or surplus milk. Improve profits with higher protein feed and soil liming plus superphosphate before adjusting grain.
Manure Hygiene Challenge in Dairies Cited by Professor
Prof W R Graham from Ontario Agricultural College warns sanitation declines with larger herds. He notes historical neglect when 3 cows per 100 acres gave little pollution but now 20 to 30 head in one building worsens manure buildup. He urges separating growing parts from buildings and keeping yards clean to prevent disease and improve eradication efforts.
