The district board approved a $936,000 bond issue to fund a new elementary school complex and renovations across several campuses. A special tax levy of 8.37 per thousand is expected to support the 20 year amortization. Polling places are listed for multiple towns and will be open 2 to 8 p.m. on election day.
The Paris Chapter sponsored swim course at Bear Lake Hot Springs continues with strong enrollment past May 27. The schedule lists sessions from May 28 to June 9 across St Charles Paris First Ward Paris Second Ward Liberty Sharon and adult classes with morning and noon slots.
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers Camp Elizabeth Passey in Paris held a May 23 meeting at Gertrude Price’s home presided by Captain das Collings. Readings included Mahown Collings history by Olive Collings, prayers, and lessons on monuments to be erected.
The Bear Lake County 4H Club camp is scheduled for June 19 to 22 in Alpine Wyoming. Eligible attendees include first year club members properly enrolled in 4H and 24H members enrolled for the coming year who completed their projects last year. Improvements since last year include cabin upgrades landscaping and new water facilities. A nearby heated swimming pool is available to campers for 25 cents daily. Camping fees cover transportation insurance food lodging and handicraft at 9 dollars per person.
Ruasel Balton son of Mrs Eridna Bolton will graduate June 2 from the University of California at Riverside. He earns a $1000 scholarship for future studies. The Boise Valley Iris Society in cooperation with the American Iris Society presented its fifth exhibition in Boise on May 25.
The 49th Fielding High School commencement, held Friday at the Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle, featured Dr. Royal L. Garff of the University of Utah speaking on the richest man in Babylon. Graduates in cap and gown gave talks and musical performances, with alumni dancing afterward at the Paris Pavilion.
Kay and Kent Smith, Fielding High School graduates and sons of Mrs Rose C Smith of Paris, will graduate June 1 from Utah State University at Logan with bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering. They earned George G Knapp service awards at the L D S Institute and won $1500 fellowships for the 1957 58 academic year toward a master of science in electrical engineering. Both will join an engineering laboratory in Salt Lake after graduation.
Budget for the Third and Fifth Wards and Stake Recreation building at Montpelier totals about 320000. Bishop Frank Girschi, chair of the building committee, reports the building proper costs 254417 plus land 4200 and other items. work halted May 11 due to heavy rains as excavation and layout proceed.
Marlene Piggott earned a general clerical diploma from the L D S Business College in Salt Lake City with exercises May 24 in Barrett hall and a reception at the Lion House. She enrolled June 4, 1956 after graduating Fielding High School and worked at Bennett Paint & Glass Co starting January 1, 1957 while completing courses.
At a Bear Lake county meeting of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers committees were named to erect a marker at Emigrant Canyon pending Central Company approval. President Haddock announced plans, the six county camps join in funding, and a Bear Lake Stake tabernacle program may precede unveiling.
Public Law 102 requires a farm operator in a spring wheat area who cannot seed his fur wheat allotment for 1057 due to bad weather to notify the county committees by June 1 that he will not seed the full allotment and will receive credit for historical purposes. Public Law 1021 does not apply if the operator reduces stored excess wheat by underplanting in the 1957 crop year, says Conover Wright, Bear Queke County ASC chairman.

Idaho non agricultural wage and salaried employment rose by 2100 from a year earlier, though sectors like lumber construction and interstate railroads fell. Agricultural work picked up later in April with sugar beet thinning and spring tasks, and strong beet sugars demand is expected in coming weeks.
Lt. jg. Mark A. Madsen son of Mr. and Mrs. Ada Madsen Bloomington arrived at Alameda California after a six month cruise in the western Pacific. He flew a Grumman Cougar with Attack Squadron 68 and took part in fleet operations in the Far East visiting Hawaii Japan Philippine Islands Hong Kong and Okinawa covering over 43000 miles. He expects to return to Idaho soon to join a naval reserve squadron near his home.
The Bear Lake Stake M I A Dance Festival was held May 21 at the Paria Pavilion under the supervision of Glen and Gracellen Michaelson and Morris and Virginia Beck. About 100 dancers participated, with forty eight girls in the final all girl number Moonlight Rapsody and Sey Day Frolic led by eight Montpelier entrants.
Idaho and other state producers testified in favor of H R 6187 and S 1393 at hearings in Washington. The bill would require U S No 2 grade for fresh potatoes and 85 percent No 2 or better for processing with label details and compulsory inspection. Opposed by several states and supported by two farm groups, with Agriculture Department backing objectives.
Public librarian Fern Vallentine announces 160 stake books arriving for public access through August 20. The collection will be available for readers at the library during the period.
Mrs Clarence Rich of Paris suffered severe burns at her home after a pan of hot grease overturned while frying chicken. She slipped into the burning grease, her clothing catching fire, and was taken to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital for treatment with a burn degree check underway.
Charles Derricott aged about 73 died May 28 at his Montpelier home after an extended illness. He was born September 20, 1878, in Liberty and moved to Montpelier in 1950. He was a L.D.S. Church member and survived by eight sons, four daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, plus three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were May 27 in Liberty chapel with Bishop Roscoe Evans presiding. burial followed in Liberty cemetery.
The Rich County Livestock Association is formed with 52 county livestock men approving the setup at the first meeting on May 20. Cattlemen must join by June 15, 1957, by contacting County Agent Wesley T. Maughan or committee members Frank Jackson, Ernest Kennedy, Verl Hoffman, Norman Weston, Alonzo Hopkins, Theris Cornea, and Wilford Hansen.
Doyle W. Anthony has been appointed chaplain for the three day Sun Valley Meyre state Lions convention. Anthony, a veteran Bear Lake Standard distributor, will lead prayers and provide spiritual guidance during the gathering.
August Jaussi son of Mrs Susan na Jaussi of Paris has completed a cemetery grave census at Fairlawn cemetery east of Stillwater Oklahoma. The study spans several months and is bound in a volume given to the Stillwater public library with copies sent to the Genealogical Society in Salt Lake the Stillwater District Genealogy committee and the DAR library in Oklahoma City. The eight person committee with MIA officers was aided by August Jaussi and his wife the genealogy secretary.
