A letter from Willard Thornock of Bloomington states he is a German prisoner of war. He reports feeling better after overseas service begun last August and missing in action since December 10, 1944, as noted by the War Department.
Silas L. Wright, a Bear Lake Soil Conservation District supervisor, attended the Idaho Association of Soil Conservation District Supervisors annual meeting in Boise on March 17, where he was reelected to another year on the state association's board. Moscow was chosen for the 1946 annual meeting, and the 1945-46 program urged Idaho farmers and urban residents to boost soil and water conservation and align land use with needs. The group also debated securing surplus heavy equipment from the armed services after victory for land leveling, drainage, irrigation, terracing and related work.
Marine correspondent Henry A. Weaver reports Mount Suribachi action where a Jap officer charged a medium tank with a sword. He clanged the tank’s steel before he was killed when another tank of Marines arrived.
Mrs. Mary Quinton of Bloomington received word this week that her son Harry Quinton has been wounded in Europe and is hospitalized somewhere in France.
Funeral services were held in St Charles for Mabel Pugmire Johnson who died at her home in Pocatello last Thursday after childbirth. She was born in St Charles daughter of Heber and the late Mrs Pugmire and is survived by her husband two daughters her parents a sister Vivian Minor of Pocatello a brother Lee Pugmire of St Charles and nephews Danney Benson Claud and Robert Minor. Her remains rest in the Pugmire family plot in St Charles cemetery.
Pfc May N Loveland of Fish Haven was a member of the 101st Airborne Division on the Western Front. The unit endured the Bastogne siege during the Battle of the Bulge with scarce ammunition and no air support, shaping a notable World War II chapter. The 506th parachute regiment helped liberate Eindhoven and participate in Normandy and Holland campaigns.

Two FFA pest drive teams led by Worth Bloom and Wayne Transtrum are named with many members on each squad. The drive lists target pests and points by animal parts. Idaho State FFA convention set for Twin Falls March 29 to 31 with Mr Hart and several boys planning to attend.
Mrs. Grant Hess of Boise state Cancer Society commander announced Idaho starts an 18 500 dollar drive April 1 headed by Jack Simplot Caldwell. The national 5 million dollar campaign is led by Eric Johnston Spokane. Hess urges vigilance early detection and six steps including watch for signals prompt doctor care regular checkups proper treatment and reducing worry. The campaign motto is Guard Those You Love.
A Marine combat correspondent recalls a ground-hugging bird skimming over Iwo Jima as heavy gunfire raged. From a foxhole a Marine quips that the bird is the stupidest alive and wishes for wings to flee the lethal bombardment.

Hibbert, lightened the mood with a grim joke about being wanted there. The Idaho Health Department urges vaccination against Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as spring approaches. Health officials say ticks are widespread and cases have occurred in many counties. Lt. (j.g.) Ferd Jaussi, navigator of a Navy Liberator with Patrol Bombing Squadron 116 tied to the Blue Raiders, completed 56 combat missions in the Pacific. He helped invade the Marianas Philippines and Palau, sinking a 4,000 ton Japanese freighter and damaging enemy shipping and shore installations before returning home on furlough. He plans further training at Pensacola after time with his mother in Paris.

Mr and Mrs Sivel Nielson of Ovid received a letter from their son Farrell Petty Officer 2/c in the Pacific. The note says he cannot reveal details due to military secrecy and ends with goodnight.
Mrs Otto Bucher received word that her son Pvt Scott McNutt of the Air Corps landed safely in India on Feb 4. Orland McNutt is stationed at Ypsilanti Michigan, and a third son Gordon serves in the Navy at San Bruno California.
On March 15 four Bear Lake county men were forwarded to Fort Douglas Utah for induction. They were accepted and assigned to the Navy Army and other branches. Names include Yearl Ray Rich Lt Charles M Smith Passey Lanark Gordon M Sparks Montpelier Raymond Barfuas Paris.
The St Charles Ward Relief Society held its annual party on March 15 with 190 attendees. The program featured a girls sextet, Amos Hulme, an old Family Album directed by Norma Pugmire, and readers and singers including Ollie Roberts and Vilda Pugmire. Evening activities included pictures with spotlight accents, dancing to music, and pageantry by local participants. The event followed by news of a Coast Guard trip and a minor fire at Clarence Passey residence, causing slight damage.
