The Literary Club met at Mrs. Lucille Crawford’s home on Thursday to elect officers for the coming year. Sybil Allred was re elected president Theressa Rich became vice president Jean Grimmett serves as secretary treasurer. The program committee includes Amy Athay Lillias Grimmett and Orma Roghaar.
The Acting Mayor and City Council express appreciation for labor and equipment donated to the cemetery improvement project. They note many contributed time and effort, and the city officials are grateful for the community support.
County Clerk Sammy Tunks reports more nominating petitions filed for the forthcoming primary. Orson H Grimmett filed for state assembly, Nyle Matthews for county coroner, F Leslie Bolton for county assessor, A Leeright for Montpelier justice of the peace, and Ray Pugmire for Montpelier constable. John Glasby visited the county as a second gubernatorial candidate, while several incumbents have taken out petitions but not yet filed. Deadline rules under review as June 28 falls on Saturday and offices close.
The Paris Lions Club meets at Paris canyon park this Thursday evening with a steak dinner at 7 30 followed by the installation of officers for 1958 59. Members and ladies are asked to arrive on time and bring eating tools plates and cups.
Larry Michel operated a two ton dirt laden dump truck that rolled several times on the Paris canyon road near the borrow pit while avoiding a pickup driven by Terral Palmer and occupied by teenagers. The crash left Michel in the hospital for three days and was investigated by Deputy Sheriff George Ramey.
The Fielding High School Class of 1948 held its second reunion last Friday with 33 attendees including class members, families, and three faculty from 1948. The event opened with a potluck dinner and bingo, with Scott Pugmire elected president and Nina Bhorn reappointed as secretary treasurer.
Old Manweather disrupted Bear Lake Post 84 American Legion plans for a steak fry and annual officers election at Paris Canyon Park last Friday. The event is moved to this Friday evening June 20 at the same site. Commander Preston Thomas says the post will provide steaks and potatoes, members to supply their own utensils and trimmings. Officers election to be held during the meeting. Members and wives urged to attend on time.
Sheriff C E Monson and Deputy George Ramey lost custody of one prisoner when a deputy U S marshal arrived from Pocatello to take George Seabiznick into federal custody. Seabiznick, an ex convict arrested after a five hour chase near St Charles, faces federal Dyer Act charges for transporting a car across state lines. Spokane police reportedly have no stolen car record despite Seabiznick’s claim of pinching it there. The car remains in sheriff’s possession pending ownership identification.
At a Rich County Selective Service Board No 17 meeting chairman N L Gray said no men will be called for induction in June Col Evan B Clay of Utah State elective Service outlined policy shifts noting lower induction rates but more per induction exams The board urged written notices for school work fatherhood address changes and employment status to meet quotas.
Harley Cochran and Arthur Cox announce a Friday vote on 1959 wheat marketing quotas for eligible growers with over 15 acres. Polls open 8 am to 7 pm, with penalties and parity-based price outcomes depending on the two thirds approval.
Utah Power & Light along with seven other utilities in the Rocky Mountain Pacific region joins a two year program to develop electricity from nuclear fission. General Atomic of General Dynamics partners in the research, aiming to create reactors for modern power plants. The group commits $500000 to the study effort.
Governors Milward Simpson of Wyoming Robert Smylie of Idaho Hugo Aronson of Montana join Secretary Seaton and Sept Lemuel Garrison in a Washington call launching a dial telephone system in Yellowstone as part of Mission 66 improvements praised by Gerrigon the ceremony director inside the park.
Minnetonka Cave near St. Charles reopens this week under cave manager Cleneth Arnell. The canyon site draws large groups with about 200 reservations for Saturday and a 100 person party from Evanston Wyoming planned for Monday. The Paris Lions Club sponsors the tours in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service.
Jo Ann Zundell daughter of Mr and Mrs Welling Zundell Logan wed Russell Passey son of Mrs Naomi Grandy Paris in the LDS Temple Logan last Thursday June 12. Relatives from Paris attended along with Henry Grandy Paris. A tea in Logan and a reception in Paris will honor the couple after a ten day honeymoon before they establish their home.
Miss Margaret Budge daughter of Mr and Mrs Taft Budge is in training at Ricks College Rexburg for a nurse's aid program and is spending the summer at an Idaho Falls hospital before resuming her studies in September.
Idaho Freedom to Work committee filed petitions bearing about 21 000 signatures with Secretary of State James H. Young. About 2 000 names were filed earlier, with a final drive and another filing set for July 3. A total of 22 869 signatures is required to place the measure on the November ballot.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Kerns travel to Chitre Panama to take up the position of area extension advisor as Bear Lake county retiree becomes agricultural extension agent in Panama City. They arrive during an uprising with guardsmen present and adjust to humid climate and new life while studying Spanish.
Bear Lake Rangers announce Saturday June 21 8 pm at Paris fairgrounds for the Queen of Rangers contest open to county girls over eighth grade with best horses. A Wyler 17 jewel waterproof watch from B and K Jewelers Montpelier will be gate prize tied to rodeo events. Prizes for Fourth of July parade floats and children's entries listed, with other committee plans for chuckwagon breakfast and a record fireworks display in Bear River Valley.
Ford A. Chatters president of the California State Personnel Board and publisher of three papers visited Bear Lake with Mrs. Chatters and Miss Linda Chatters on the way home to Lindsay. They praised the valley views from Highway 89 west of Garden City and warned locals to guard the water source against potential Los Angeles use.
Mrs. Olive Hansen hosted a Wednesday evening bridal shower at the Fish Haven Resort cafe for ElDean Lewis. Guests included resort employees and the bride’s relatives, who enjoyed opening gifts and prize drawings.
The Spartanettes will sponsor a car wash and polish at Fielding High School grounds Saturday June 21. Proceeds go to uniforms for the Spartanettes and the Fielding High drill team for next year.
