Ezra Poulsen reflects on the past and present of Bear Lake valley from the Gray place to Mink Creek and Iron Canyon. He recalls childhood summers by the lake, pioneer builders, aging roads, a brass Trim banker’s auto, and community erosion amid materialism, concluding with a Postscript on time and profit.
The East Coast Boy Scout convention in Chicago drew 2700 delegates and officials. Ezra Taft Benson and Arthur A. Schieck gave standout speeches as Tenday council leaders attended, with Thomas Johnston of Camp Lifton appearing for the sixth time. The next convention will meet in San Francisco.
Funeral services for Alvah A. Welker age 83 were held in Twin Falls and Bloomington wards with Bishop Alfred B. Hart officiating. Survived by widow Emma Elizabeth Ward Welker and children Ver nal A. Riverside Emmett L. Lebanon Elbert F. Hansen Eunice Adams Jerome Villa Humpherys Twin Falls and others. Burial in Bloomington cemetery with grave dedication by Bishop T. J. Nelson.
El Paso Natural Gas outlines a five to six million dollar natural gas extraction plant for Opal Wyoming. Construction starts by June 16 with completion by year end. About 150 to 200 workers will build it and 25 will be kept on permanently after completion.
Bear Lake area residents received degrees at Utah State University in Logan on Saturday June 7. Harold S. Budge led the graduating class as top honor recipient. Others include Opal Shepherd, Robert Wilson in Education, Mabel Athay with a Master of Science, and Nyle Matthews in Agriculture. Harold is the son of Cyril S. Budge and his wife.
Announcement of engagement Miss Margrethe Myklebost Citrus Heights California to Scott Milan Law Roseville California. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Byron Myklebost and son of Mr and Mrs Charles I Law of Paris. The wedding set for June 21 at the Friends church Citrus Heights with a church parlors reception. The couple will reside in Roseville where Law worked with the California Highway Department.
The Paris Teen Center in the Hawkes Building will be closed for the summer except for private parties. Anyone wishing to host a private event should contact Mrs. Thelma Michel.
Idaho Fish and Game notes a shift in hatchery aims from pure fishing to broader appeal. As development pushes into backcountry, more creel-size fish in more places become the program’s objective to satisfy diverse anglers.
The Bear Lake County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee announced polling places for a June 20 referendum on 1959 wheat marketing quotas. Eligible voters include growers with more than 15 acres in 1959, with feed wheat participants allowed up to 30 acres on farm. If two thirds approve, quotas stay and price support rises to at least 1.81 per bushel. if not, support falls to about 1.20.
Rich County farmers received their wheat allotments for 1959 mailed this week. Arthur Cox, chairman of the County ASC committee, says the 3 500 acre, 77 allotments total reflect Rich County share of the national 56 million acre limit. A farmer referendum June 20 will decide marketing under quotas, but the 1959 allotments remain in effect.
Bear Lake Riding Stables by Jack and Donna Sickler opens this week opposite the Holiday Inn in Garden City. The service offers mountain trips with breakfasts, moonlight rides, pack trips for adults, and picnic rides for juniors, as the couple relocates from Yermo and Palm Springs, California where they ran stables for years.
The 1959 Idaho State College summer session in Pocatello opened with registration and classes began Tuesday. The term runs until August 1 and offers 188 courses across 20 fields under Summer School Director Dr. Clarence Moore. An FBI law enforcement academy is scheduled June 16 to 27.
Gilbert Parker of Paris reported a sizable catch when an eight pound trout surfaced at Bear Lake while he was trolling. Parker displayed the fish in Paris, underscoring that Bear Lake still yields large trout for patient anglers.
Bear Lake Valley groups plan a queen contest June 21 at the Paris Fair grounds as part of the annual Horse Show and Rodeo and Fourth of July celebration. Open to Bear Lake Valley girls who are eighth grade graduates or older and under 90, the selection will lead the big Ranger event. The Fourth of July parade committee urges local businesses and churches to prepare floats and marching units, while other Ranger committees report progress on the rodeo chuckwagon breakfast at Emerson Elementary and a proposed fireworks display said to be the largest in Bear River Valley.
The Farm Bureau will host a talent contest at the Ovid ward chapel on Thursday evening June 26 at 8 o clock open to all. Entry contacts are Mrs Thelma Michel Paris Mrs Earl Findlay Kanark and Mrs Alfred Humpherys Liberty.
Airman 1C Lowell B. Tueller of Paris earned a commendation certificate from the Sth Air Division commander at Geiger Field for outstanding duties as morning report clerk with the 497th Fighter Squadron. He served from November 1954 to March 1958 with Western Air Defense Force at Hamilton AFB, California, for exemplary preparation and submission of morning reports.
Bear Lake Post 84 American Legion will host a steak fry at the parking on June 18 in conjunction with its annual election meeting. Commander Preston Thomas says the post will provide steaks and potatoes. members supply trimmings and their own utensils. All Legion members and wives are urged to attend on time.
The Bear Lake County Cancer Fund drive yields 358.20 on the west valley. Listed workers include Bloomington volunteers Arden Bunderson and Aland Payne among others across Bloomington Fish Haven Lanark Liberty Ovid Paris First Ward Hansen Sharon St. Charles and helpers like Gwen Watterson and Fayon Pugmire. Total raised by area groups ranges from 18.25 to 80.28 with community participation noted.
Bear Lake county youths left Tuesday morning June 10 for Armed Forces physical examinations at the Boise induction center. On June 11, Joe Romero from Grand Junction Colorado joined, with Glenn Willett from Georgetown Idaho, Darrell Wells from Montpelier, Wayne Stock from Fish Haven, and Larry Gene Alleman from Bern. Grant Hymas Orr was called but transferred to Boise where he now resides.
Wayne Transtrum reported a man with gas cans near his home. A stolen car, 15 gallons of gasoline, and a five hour manhunt ended with George Seabiznick captured and jailed in Paris. FBI involvement and possible guilty plea on transporting a stolen car across state lines.
State Reclamation Engineer Mark R. Kulp and his wife Julia Kulp of Boise died in a highway crash near Bliss on Highway 30. Brother Walter Kulp remained in serious condition. passengers in the other car include Mrs. James H. Cloninger and daughter Wanda of Wolf Point, Mont. Kulp served 15 years and was active in Bear River compact consultations. He previously taught at the University of Idaho.
