Idaho barley Gem variety seen as future production boost
University of Idaho agronomist K H Klages predicts higher barley yields with the Gem variety. Ten year data from Moscow shows Gem outperforming Trebi by 18.9 percent and Hannchen by 24.5 percent with strong results across the Northwest. Klages says Gem's six rowed, white seeded spring barley matures earlier and suits dry land and irrigated Idaho. Seed supplies are limited but foundation stock and certified seed will be available next year for growers statewide.
