J H Gipson settled in Caldwell Idaho years ago and founded Caxton Printers now a leading Idaho job printing firm. The piece notes Paris as a potential publishing center with advantages like proximity to government processes and existing presses, suggesting decentralization benefits for small towns.
With the appointment of community chairman for Bear Lake county plans are nearing completion for the 1958 March of Dimes, according to A. M. Rich, county chairman. The community chairmen are Mrs Leonard Perkins Fish Haven Shirley Bunderson St Charles Mrs Vera Haddock Bloomington Mrs Irene Wyler Paris Mrs Carma Jensen Ovid Mrs Adele Brown Liberty Sharon Lanark Harriet Kunz Bern Willis Ward Montpelier Linda Crane Bentington Mrs Roy Hayes Georgetown Mrs J Rodney Ream Dingle and Beth Widmer Geneva. All schools in the county are being contacted under the direction of A J Winters, county superintendent of schools.
A. B. Hulme reports 193 elementary pupils west of Eighth Street with 61 north of Clay, 79 between Monroe and Washington, and 53 south of Washington. The Central school site seems ideal for population but constraints loom. The New Jersey Plan and a forthcoming state building code require five acres for the first 100 pupils plus one additional acre per 100 pupils. with only 6,312 acres available, site size is insufficient. The survey also considers using the Washington school site. Continued on Page 2.
The Idaho Engineers convention in Boise today through Saturday aims to promote science as a career for youth. Discussions will outline a program to relieve the current shortage of scientists and engineers in the country with speakers from various parts of the United States.
Idaho residents are estimated to pay 177.4 million dollars as Idaho's share of a 74.934 billion federal budget for the coming year. The Taxpayers of Idaho call for restraint on non defense and low priority spending while supporting national security.
Fielding High School PTA met January 18 in the auditorium with Mrs. Margaret Bunderson presiding. Gilbert Hull outlined the arts theme and religion’s influence on fine arts. performances included dance, readings, talks, and a vocal duet.
Avery Wixom pled guilty to carrying a concealed weapon after a New Year shooting in Montpelier and received a 10 day county jail sentence. He spent part of the term in Paris jail but was moved to Montpelier jail for the balance due to conditions. County Attorney Burgyone plans another charge for the alleged shooting of Ernest White, who remains in serious condition at a Salt Lake hospital.
The Lions International District mid winter meeting in Pocatello featured International Director Claude M DeVorss of Wichita Kansas and a large District 39 E delegation. Dan Vallentine Salt Lake Tribune columnist spoke at lunch on Nothing Serious and Wichita mayor DeVorss chaired the evening program with songs readings and remarks on Lions work across 78 countries. Paris Lions Club members Floyd Lewis and Mrs Lewis secretary Mark Pugmire and Mrs Pugmire attended along with Glen Grim Broxon and others.
The Navy extends its guaranteed school assignment program to all Class A B and C schools for ex Navy men. Chief Raymond Stamp in Pocatello says former sailors may choose any school and be assigned from home. The plan adds to existing benefits of up to 80 days advanced leave and travel pay with duty options.
A cabin in Home Canyon owned by Dr. R. B. Lindsay of Montepelier was broken into and ransacked of valuable merchandise last Saturday night. Reports to the Sheriff’s office in Paris indicate investigators are looking into the case.
Brigham Young University women’s chorus of 60 and a male quartet perform Friday January 16 at 8 p.m. in the Bear Lake Stake tabernacle Paris. The Paris Second Ward funds the program and thanks residents for hosting about 70 group members.
Funeral services for Agnes Parker Toomer age 87 lifelong Bear Lake county resident were held Thursday in the Montpelier Second Ward chapel with Bishop Warren Passey officiating. The service included prayers tributes obituaries and hymns by family and ward members and interment followed at Lanark cemetery.
A Bloomington get together honored Emma as Krogue for two years of teaching. Class members Paula Haddock Lana Lee Payne Evelyn Payne Susan Thomas Collin Hart Roy Gleed Wayne Painter Phyllis Thornock Susanne Ward Cathleene Ward Virginia Thornock Vickie Reese Ray Thornock and Roger Ward attended. The event was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. James Payne.
Montpelier voters face a February 18 election on issuing 486000 in bonds to build a 15 room school near Bear Lake Memorial hospital and a vocational agriculture building plus land and heating costs. The plan aims to replace the Washington school after a fire and trades are arranged to secure a favorable site, with an estimated annual tax impact of 3.68 per 1000 later for 20 years.
Senator Henry Dworshak warns that four Idaho pillars mining dairy potatoes and lumber will suffer from tariff actions next year as imports are pushed to loosened trade. He cites butter fat concentrates foreignTs lumber plywood and cheap labor as undercutting domestic markets and opposes extended erasing agreements.
Idaho employers must file federal tax returns by January 31 including last quarter 1967 and the annual unemployment tax. The IRS notes forms were mailed in October. Farmers social security tax for 1957 farm employees is also due January 31.
Fielding Spartans rebounded from an earlier loss to Rockland, defeating American Falls Beavers 61 to 49. Doug Price led with 23 points while Rockland’s Ralpha had 18 in the prior game. JV squads split results with a 27 26 overtime win for Fielding over Rockland, then a 36 28 loss to American Falls.
Ralph Hanney was sworn in as mayor of Randolph Utah at the city council meeting last week. Jack Bell and Verl Hoffman joined him as the new councilmen at the same session.
Dworshak argues for keeping domestic markets open for national products noting foreign firms avoid paying local taxes and do not employ local workers. He emphasizes economic self reliance and the benefits of supporting home industry.
Over 200 oil leases were filed in Bear Lake county by Sam V. Tunks as part of a plan to lease 7610 unsurveyed acres around Mudlake and nearby areas. Major companies, led by S. S. Brooks and A. M. Culver of Casper, Wyoming, are pursuing mineral rights with signed leases from flat landowners for ten years. Payments of 50 cents per acre per year are made with the first year prepaid.
Arthur Shepherd American composer and musician former Salt Lake City and Paris resident died Sunday after surgery in a Cleveland hospital. He was born February 19, 1880 and served as Western Reserve University professor emeritus. Funeral services may be held Friday with burial in Salt Lake City. survivors include Grazella Pulliver Shepherd and sons Peter New York Arthur P Shepherd Los Angeles Richard P Shepherd Salt Lake City and George Odell. He had seven brothers and one sister and had visited Paris recently.
The Rainbow Rod and Gun Club will hold its next meeting at the Rod and Gun cabin in Montpelier canyon on January 20 at 7 30 p m. A film on conservation of the country’s natural resources will be shown and all interested in conservation and club activities are invited to attend.
Camp Elizabeth Passey of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers holds its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Alfred Rogers on January 30 at 2 p.m. All members urged to attend by Mrs. Law, the secretary.
