Paris merchant Owen T. Shepherd dies at 69

Owen T. Shepherd, a Paris merchant and son of Fredrick Tracey and Mary Elizabeth Morgan Shepherd, died Saturday in Salt Lake City Veterans Hospital from diabetes complications. Born May 11, 1883 in Paris, he served in WWI, later ran a general merchandise store with his brother Archie. He married Mona Athay on March 1, 1943. Survived by widow and two brothers Archie of Paris and Jeter L. of Lander Wyoming. Services were held today at the Paris LDS First Ward Chapel with burial in Paris cemetery. Matthews Mortuary handled arrangements.

County Savings Bond Sales Report For January

County sales of U S Savings Bonds reached twelve thousand four hundred eighty six dollars in January. Statewide January sales totaled eight hundred thirty eight thousand five hundred ninety six dollars. Chairman Warren G Wright notes bonds support thrift across ages and occupations and began in 1941 to back war efforts.

Fielding BTA Hosts Valentine Carnival for Library

The Fielding BTA held a Valentine carnival Thursday evening in the high school gym with a cooked food sale cake walk dancing contests and skill booths. Proceeds went to Fielding Library to buy a set of career books.

Revenue man in Montpelier to aid taxpayers

Internal Revenue Agent Edwin R. Stone and State Income Tax Auditor William J. Fryer will be in Montpelier at the Motor Hotel starting Monday at 1 00 pm through Wednesday March 4 5 and 6 to assist taxpayers who have questions about making out their income tax retorts.

Boy Scout Court of Honor Held February 6

The Boy Scout District Court of Honor was held February 6 in the First Ward chapel at Montpelier with a large crowd. Awards were presented including Second Class to Duane Rosen and Allen Pugmire, First Class to Charles Olsen and others, Star and Life Badges awarded, and merit badges listed for many scouts. Closing remarks referenced district executive and a separate farewell.

Sales Tax Bill Introduced in Legislature

Rep. Arvil Millar introduces a three percent sales tax in Idaho aimed at repealing the head tax, reducing property and income tax burdens, and boosting public school funding. The bill would raise about $52 million in the next biennium with $34 million for tax relief, $12 million to close the revenue gap, $4 million for the permanent building fund, and $3 million for municipalities. Exemptions include hotel stays under 30 days and various farm, utility, and nonresident sales. retail sales would be taxed at 3 percent with some items exempted or taxed later.

Idaho milk output dips from 1961 peak in 1962

Idaho produced 1 623 million pounds of milk in 1962, 2 percent below the 1961 record of 1 656 million. Milk cow numbers averaged 197 000, down from 200 000, with production per cow at 8 240 pounds, slightly under the prior year's 8 280.

Fielding Spartans Take Second With Two Wins

Fielding Spartans beat Grace 68 60 on Friday then defeated Bancroft 51 41 on Saturday to take second in the league. Jayvees fell to Grace 32 30 in a thriller. Willer led Bancroft with 16 for the Jayvee win, while Stucki and Peterson paced Fielding. Mattson missed time with flu but returned to practice.

Novelty Theatre Family Tickets Now On Sale

The Novelty Theatre offers family tickets at 15 dollars for six months from March 1 to August 31, and single tickets at 10 dollars. Resuscitator Now Available for Use by Public in Paris

The portable resuscitator purchased by the Lions Club for the CD ambulance is now usable by anyone in need. It arrived in Paris on February 16 and is fully equipped to assist life saving with oxygen. No trained operator is currently on hand, but training will begin soon.

Idaho Mother for 1963 Campaign Starts

The Idaho Committee of the American Mothers' Committee in New York launched the 1963 Idaho Mother program. Jeanne Stearns reports sixteen application requests from Idaho regions and reminds applicants to return blanks by March 1. The Idaho entry must reach New York by March 14 for National Jury review, with the winner traveling to New York May 6 to 10 to compete nationally.

Stucki Pioneer in Bear Lake Cattle and Horse Breeding Dies

William B. Stucki, prominent cattleman and thoroughbred breeder, native of Bear Lake valley, died February 19 at his Paris home. He lived in Paris 82 years, raised Hereford cattle and horses, served as secretary of Bear Lake Cattle and Horse Association, and trained horses across seven western states plus Mexico and British Columbia. He is survived by wife Millie and ten children, twenty-two grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, plus several siblings.
