Barfuss praises New Zealanders during leave visit

Corporal Joe Barfuss, home on a month’s leave with his parents, describes New Zealanders as reserved and well fed though many over 17 wear false teeth. He notes their war effort, routine meals, and fondness for tea and crumpets, and recalls crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on his return from Saipan. He will be reassigned in South Carolina after furlough.

Sgt Elden Pugmire Enjoys First Furlough in 33 Months

Sgt Elden R Pugmire son of Ray and Mrs Pugmire of St Charles enjoys his first furlough in 33 months. He and Mrs Pugmire daughter of Leslie Shepherd of Logan have visited relatives in Utah and Idaho. He recently returned from overseas where he served as crew chief and engineer in the B 26 Training Command in North Africa and Italy. After furlough they will go to Santa Monica California for reassignment.

Bear Lake County Men Serve in Famed 713th Battalion

Two Bear Lake county soldiers, Sgt. Raymond E. Stephens of Bennington and Cpl. Bruce M. Nicholls of Georgetown, serve in the 713th Railway Operating Battalion of the Sixth Army Group in France. The unit, arrived Casablanca in 1943, operates rails and trains to move Allied supplies to front lines.

The Paris MiMen suffered a defeat in Georgetown on Thursday night. H Edw Sutton Dies in Salt Lake City at 75

H Edw Sutton aged 75 of Salt Lake City died January 24 at his home. Born July 30 1869 in Salt Lake City he moved to Paris youth and held roles including bishop of Paris First ward justice of the peace Magna mayor Paris councilman and school board member He married Alice Smith in 1889 and survived by a widow daughter Oral Mower and four sons plus siblings and grandchildren.

Mrs Sam Wilkes New Postmistress At St. Charles

The St. Charles post office moved into Sam Wilkes Grocery on February 1 with Mrs Thelma Wilkes acting postmistress and J B Dodds overseeing the transfer. A Civil Service exam will pick a permanent postmaster later. Hanneh J Nelson retires after 28 years, citing care for her aging mother, and wishes the office continued growth.

Red Cross War Fund Drive Sets Community Quotas

The 1945 Paris Chapter drive opens March 1 with a $2400 local quota and a $2650 overall goal. Quotas by community are listed from Fish Haven to Sharon, based on LDS census data. Ward volunteers Frances Loveland, Ray Rich, Asa Madsen, Dan C Rich named to lead with sub-chairmen to be chosen.

Farm Goal Conference Set for Bear Lake County

Bear Lake county farmers and officials will meet Monday February 12 at 1 p m at the Montpelier AAA office to outline the 1945 production plan. Quincey Rice will represent the state AAA committee alongside Idaho Agricultural Extension Service and the state USDA War board. Final county crop and livestock goals will be approved and plans to record 1945 livestock and production details will be discussed for AAA conservation payments. Also noted is a First Ward Relief Society lesson on The Birthland Period led by Mrs Madge Hoge.

Visit Bristows Host Sister and Wife in Paris Montpelier

Mrs Peggy Bristow arrived Sunday for an indefinite visit with her sisters Mrs Spencer H Rich and Mrs Thames Bird of Paris and Mrs Reed Hansen of Montpelier. Mr Bristow is at an army camp in Texas. An eight pound one ounce baby boy was born Monday night to Cpl and Mrs John B Hoge. Mrs Hoge and son are in the Montpelier hospital. Papa John is a member of the U S Army and left recently for overseas duty.

Poulsens Visit Law Home Then Travel to Utah

Missing Soldier Presumed Dead after MIA Since 1944

Sergeant Raymond L. Downing 23 of Montpelier is presumed dead after being missing in action over Italy since January 12 1944. War Department notified his parents Mr and Mrs E L Downing that he was missing in action March 4 1944. He served as a radio gunner on a B 26 stationed in Sardinia.

Red Cross Sets Up Prisoner Mail Links in Philippines

Mrs. Emma Shepherd of the Paris Chapter leads a Red Cross effort to permit liberated American and Allied civilians in the Philippines to receive mail. Messages go via APO 442 care of San Francisco Postmaster, with Western Union notes to the Adjutant General in Washington. Military authorities will handle information from interviews and any other data.

Wounded Paris Soldier Recovering in England

Private Loyal C. Lauritzen, 19, of Paris Idaho, wounded in Germany, is recuperating at Seventh General Hospital in England. He has a Purple Heart and is in a rehabilitation program with supervised athletics and physical training. He recounted the 15 mile armored push and sniper injury that led to his evacuation to England.

WAVES Ensign Sybil Cole Promoted to Lieutenant in Washington

She served as County Demonstration Agent for Washington County based in St George. Her friends wish her success in the service.
