A proposal advocates conserving wetlands in Bear Valley to create a managed wildfowl area with public access, blinds, and equipment sharing. It calls for moderate water level control, cooperative land game bird management, and renting hunting rights to fund preservation, boosting employment and local commerce.

Bear Lake Rangers announce the first annual Christmas party to be held Saturday night December 28 at 8 p.m. in the Paris First Ward recreation hall. Each couple invites another couple as guests. Walter Ward, vice-president, will MC a night of barbecue, pot luck, a western hoe down, and a staged program.
Children of Paris Lions Club members entertained at a Monday evening event in the Emerson school auditorium. Floyd Lewis, club president, distributed gifts as youngsters aged three to ten performed songs, dances, and recitations. A large decorated Christmas tree and Santa Claus capped the festive program.
The Bloomington PTA met on December 19 at the Bloomington amusement hall. The Edison school presented the operetta Christmas Angel directed by J. W. Patterson Lark Bateman and Avis Painter. Clarinet numbers by Laurelli Laker Linda Bateman and Evelyn Payne were heard between acts. Over 200 attended and homemade candy was sold.
Mrs Juanita Smart received 144 grandchildren instead of 14 after a Linotype error. She notes many counties phoned The Post in disbelief and worries about the mistaken tally spreading.
Fielding Spartan basketball beat Montpelier on their floor last week by a lopsided score as three Spartans Ronnie Peterson 20 Terral Michaelson 16 Sterling Vallentine 10 led with strong rebounding. Montpelier Ross Peterson 13 and Star Valley later defeated Fielding 61 41 with Braves controlling rebounds and foul shooting.
Forecasts show fair business and steady farm income in 1958 with inflation moderating from 1956 and 1957. Demand for farm products remains strong due to high consumer income, though production costs rise. Government payments stay large but Soil Bank reserves shrink. exports remain high but below last year. General economy supports agriculture amid a cost price squeeze.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Ellen Jacobson 88 lifelong Bear Lake Valley resident were held in the Bloomington Ward chapel. She died December 17 in Idaho Falls after a heart ailment. Survivors include three sons four daughters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At the Lowe Drug company in Paris on Saturday night the first prize of a Mixmaster went to Mrs Fern Wallentine. A long list of prize winners followed including Earl Reese Ronald Parker Dallas Athay Orlean Innes Ruth Nye Barbara Hulme and many others.
Santa Claus rode a red suit and bells in a bobsled driven by Shetland ponies to deliver treats to several hundred Bear Lake Valley children in front of the county courthouse. The event, sponsored by the Bear Lake Rangers and Paris City, featured Roy Roghaar’s loud speaker system and a candy and nut distribution committee led by Charles Wyler and Willard Hansen. Seymour Sleight spread rock salt to reduce slip hazards before festivities.
Hugh Shepherd, Paris business man, suffered a stroke on Wednesday afternoon last week. He is progressing in recovery with reports indicating a complete recovery within not too long a time.
Rex Pugmire, airman in the U S Navy and son of Mr and Mrs Don L Pugmire of Montpelier, is home on 80 days leave from Naval Air Station Agana Guam. He is well known in Paris and has spent much of his leave there. He will return to his base in Guam this weekend.
The West Side unit of the Artificial Breeders association held its annual meeting on Thursday evening December 19. Two new directors were elected to the board representing Laketown and St Charles. About 20 members heard Rosa Olsen outline future plans and display breeding images. Norman Roberts of Ovid chaired the session and refreshments were provided by the West Side Breeders association.
About 1500 Rocky Mountain Dairy Association members received nearly 350000 in dividends and a scale-off for the 1954 fiscal year. The report notes total dividends exceeding 1.75 million since operations began in 1942 and credits strong management and competition for the cooperative’s success. Bear Lake and Cache Valley milk markets and the Swiss cheese operation feature prominently with manager Edwin Gossner noted. Five Bear Lake dairymen received 5500 in certificates for 1956-57 payable in 1959-60 plus base milk payments and dividends summarized.
